So i finally went to see kubo today (last time i walked under the burning sun for an hour to find out it was tje next day when i couldnt go)
My favourite character was
The two sisters
Strangely enough perhaps
But the hair-raising atmosphere they brought forth and their design and oh my god and the animation and the history they had with Kubo’s mum
Monkey mother though wow. That swordfighting. That moment she sacrificed herself confronting her sisters…. breathtaking
Wish they had focused a tiny bit more on uh. The mythology of it all. I mean, apparently grandpa wasn’t lying about wanting to elevate kubo by taking his humanity? But then why did he have kubo’s eye by the end? Or was it because he still had it and then his stolen eye was opened to humanity?
The way he was portrayed at the confrontation was kinda erratic also. What was his story?
And the string instrument? What was its story? It was the instrument of stories and magic and memory the most important magic of all to weather the cold. Where did the ability to wield it come from in Kubo’s mum? I thought she wielded a katana as emissary from the moonking. Where did the paper and magic of music and creation come from?
And the symbolic oomph was not completely paced right sometimes i feel like the switching of the sword & armour for the instrument did not quite land as well as it could have. Perhaps because of the lack of symbolic grounding. Love, memory and community vs. death killing and empty artifacts of power.
Also. So Hanzo was looking for the sword and breastplate and helmet but then he met WAS SHE NOT NAMED??? I CANT THINK OF HER NAME. ???? Monkey. And they fell in love and had a kid and he never got to picking up the armour and sword to challenge the moon king? And then they had to fight off the Moon King and evrrybody died but the sisters left Hanzo alive as a manbeetle. Lol that was pretty stupid but i guess they wanted him to suffer??? And so why did monkey lose her mind mire and more every day? And the blinking thing? Did i miss something there? (Haha) but really. Was there a thematic resolution i missed?
But oh my god the design of evrything oh my god the everything it looked SO BEAUTOFULAMBFKSKDN
Except the final boss. But maybe that was bc of 3d?
Anyway. Wow. Wow again and three times over.
