Klaroline Fic: The Wolf IV [7/13]
Summary: Five years after the downfall of the Mikaelson family, Caroline returns to New Orleans to fulfill the promise she made to Marcel: one day, she would be back for the man he has been keeping prisoner in the bowels of the old compound, and she would not be leaving without him. But the plans to abandon the city's eternal loop of tragedy behind once and for all are thwarted when a new enemy with unexpected old ties resurfaces, threatening not just Eve's life, but Caroline's as well. -- S04E07 Bag of Cobras 🐍
This is for Eve, Klaus tells himself as he pours cold blood from a bag into his crystal tumbler.
She is worth every sacrifice, he repeats like a mantra even as his stomach gives one slow, mournful twist.
It's all for Eve.
He's almost losing his appetite.
Feeding from a bag every now and then, in times of utmost necessity, is one thing. Making a habit of it, however, goes against every primal instinct he has.
And yet, here he is.
It was Caroline’s one condition for allowing Eve to return to New Orleans.
No feeding from the staff. No compelling mindless tourists to wander into the courtyard for a snack. No slashing wrists at the dinner table. If you want our daughter back here, we need some ground rules.
He had been adamantly against leaving Eve in the care of an elderly werewolf in the swamp, but Caroline's resolve was iron and - frankly, it was hard to argue her point. Eve has never seen a vampire feed before. She is aware of the principle, but there is a chasm between knowing your parents drink human blood and witnessing its gory reality.
She is not yet old enough to understand what they are, not in all its grisly, obscure details. And the truth is Klaus isn't sure he wants her to. It's a farce, perhaps even a cruel one, but he is not yet ready to surrender the unfiltered trust she has in him. The illusion of who he is in her eyes. She sees only a man who loves her fiercely. Not a monster.
Klaus hasn't been just a man in a very long time. He didn't think he'd ever want to be one again. But it is unexpectedly refreshing. Something he is yet to tarnish. Someone he is yet to disappoint. A relationship he is yet to destroy. Makes him want to preserve it, protect it, for as long as he can.
Someday, likely sooner rather than later, the illusion will shatter. But it doesn't have to be just yet.
Caroline has done a marvelous job of keeping the wicked truths of their existence out of Eve's sight for seven years, protecting her innocence in a world that tends to grind gentle things into dust. Klaus should be able to stomach a few rules.
That doesn't mean he has to enjoy them. Read the full chapter here -- Another billion years, another update. 🤡 No, this story is not abandoned. I intended to get to the end of it if it's the last thing I do (might as well be). Anyway, life has been chaotic and troubled and I've been on an anxiety frenzy. I hope this isn't a total garbage. Thanks very much for @definedareasofuncertainty who kindly took time out of her very busy schedule trying to be productive to the society by becoming a doctor to read this. 🥲🙏 As always, your comments/reblogs/kudos/messages give me life and keep my mind from spiraling completely. I'd v much appreciate it if you could contribute to keeping me determined to write instead of resorting to something more dramatic while life is busy and complicated. Thansk to those of you who have no yet lost hope on this fic 🙏
