Because she was a teenager. She was a 17 year old girl with an emotionally distant mother, an absent father who left for his husband, her two best friends rarely took her seriously, she was abused and compelled by Damon (which her friends knew about yet did nothing until later) and Matt, who was supposed to be her boyfriend, was still in love with Elena and couldn’t devote himself fully.

She was 17 and had no one to turn to, she had no true friends or an actual parental figure. She was a pawn in their games for ages, in season 2 she was being manipulated and abused by Katherine as a baby vampire. Once again, her 2 supposed best friends were aware of this.

She was seen as a blonde distraction for Klaus, yet he was the only one who saw past the mean girl cheerleader bully everyone made her out to me and saw the girl beneath the facade - the girl who simply longed to be loved.

But also, she was the perfect representation of a teenage girl. She was blunt, but most teenagers tend to be. She gossiped, she cheered but she had deeply rooted insecurities like most girls do. She was a realistic teenage girl in the midst of supernatural drama and people over look it frequently.

Roomates!AU. Friends to lovers. Rom-Com Vibes. AH/AU Klaus is having a bad month, so Caroline decides it's a great idea to drag him along to a round of Speed Dating. Other men in the room do not approve. (That's how it starts, anyway) --

Caroline doesn't see Elijah again for the next two days. Whatever has brought him to town, he either glides through the apartment like a ghost or their schedules are totally at odds. If not for the extravagantly tailored wool coat hanging by the door and what Caroline has quickly learned is a very distinctive brand of grumpiness on Klaus, she might have thought he'd already left.

Fate seems to be sparing her the embarrassment of coming face to face with him again after that first encounter, and it's probably for the best. But curiosity gnaws at her like an unscratchable itch. Elijah has intrigued her for years, far more than any of Klaus' other siblings. Finally putting a face - well, a little more than a face - to the name was satisfying, but it has fueled her desire to know more.

The Mikaelsons carry an enigmatic allure, a heady mix of glamor and mystery that is equal parts magnetic and intimidating. Despite living with one and being friends with another, the family remains a riddle to Caroline. The more she learns, the murkier it gets. It's maddening. Nothing about them makes sense. Caroline can't even decide if they have a deep dislike for each other or love one another to unhealthy degrees.

After two days, though, she's just about lost hope of bumping into Elijah again. She doubts he'll be staying for much longer, especially with Klaus' cordial show of hospitality. Not that Elijah seemed bothered - being caustic to siblings for no apparent reason seems to be one of those things that are normal by Mikaelson standards. It's just how they operate.

She is mindlessly scrolling through Instagram after yet another grueling shift at the hospital, waiting for the microwave to deliver her sad leftover dinner. Her feed is embarrassingly weak. It's been ages since she even posted anything new. Her last photo was taken on a night out with Tyler, for crying out loud. Should she even keep it there? What's the proper etiquette for when you break up with someone for no earth-shattering reasons, the relationship just fizzling out and running its course? Is it rude to delete all evidence of him from her social media? Is it expected? Would he even care?

June 5th, Week 1: Canon Divergence

Week 1 is dedicated to the fix-it fics, to writers and creators alike declaring fuck canon - now I’m doing it my way. What would happen if Caroline finally grabbed a ticket to New Orleans? Decades down the line, did a certain pair meet in Paris, Rome and Tokyo? What hidden scenes did the show not give us? Perhaps Forbes changed to Mikaelson… Make it a happily ever after or completely derail canon and make it messy - there are things such as humanity switches after all.

June 12th, Week 2: All Human

All Human is a week dedicated to the fics where we take out the supernatural and bring Klaus and Caroline into a more familiar environment. Are they childhood sweethearts who reconnect in later years? Has Klaus always held a sweet spot for his best friend? Or perhaps they’re ex’s, unable to stay apart for long and reuniting in an avalanche of passion. As long as they’re human, and there’s no vampirish fangs in sight, anything goes.

June 19th, Week 3: Creatures

A week for fans of fantasy and folklore, it’s time to imagine Klaus and Caroline as any creature you desire - just make sure it’s not canon. Perhaps two werewolf Alpha rivals find out they have more in common than they realised, or Klaus leans too far over the ship’s edge to glimpse the blonde beauty beneath the waters below. Maybe you even decide to add a dash of enemies to lovers, and watch as an angel falls madly in love with the devil...
