The KC-135R model is a decent aircraft, but it’s old. We used to refer to the R model as a 57 Chevy, it’s cool, it looks good, but when you actually drive an original one, it kinda sucks. Add a Big Block engine and it goes fast, but it’s still a 57 Chevy and it kinda sucks.
Either way, it was never going to fill any of the gap left by the ailing C-141B. Those poor birds had just be flown into the dirt, and they were falling apart right in front of us. A McGuire -141 broke it backbone while refueling and they ended up selling it on eBay of all places.

Meanwhile at Boeing: The F108-CR-100 (the military designation for a CFM-56) is being retrofitted to the upgraded KC-135 R model aircraft. One of the selling points was the ability for the KC-135 to carry one of these engines as cargo as shown in this photo.
Good thing they took this photo, as It’s the only time I’ve seen it done because it was darn near impossible to do without damaging something, the airframe, the engine, the Boom Operator… you get the idea.

Boeing KC-135R 1:500, this aircraft was a request from @dunleck_airport some time ago, which is divided into four separate parts, the fuselage, two wings, and the refueling boom. Apart from that I made the E variant (KC-135E), with different details, the engines, the APU (?), and a cable above the fuselage by gluing sewing threads. Also an attachment of pictures of both.
