This is a very difficult post to share, but we have some bad news about our Koda Bear. He hasn’t been feeling himself this last month and we have had multiple trips to two different vets with no answers. Bloodwork, fecal samples, abdominal X-rays, all looked normal. Some days he felt well and other days completely lethargic with no appetite. We took him to an emergency vet @ethosvethealth yesterday because he was getting worse and it was day four of no food, even after trying prescription appetite stimulants. A chest X-ray revealed pneumonia along with several masses the ER doctor is almost certain are cancer. They attempted to transfer him to @ucdavisvetmed last night where they have an oncology department, but their ICU was full. He is on fluids, pain medication, and oxygen and we are waiting to hear where they will be able to transfer him today that has an oncology unit. The next step will be performing an ultrasound to try to aspirate one of the masses to confirm a diagnosis, and if it is indeed cancer, to determine what type and what, if any, treatment is available. #bernesemountaindogs have tragically short lifespans averaging 6-8 years and have a 50% chance of getting cancer compared to around 27% in other dog breeds. Koda is seven years old, and while we’ve always known cancer was a possibility, the suddenness of his illness still feels shocking and devastating. We will keep everyone posted in the coming days as we receive updates.
