lake mweru sits at the boundary between zambia's luapula province and the democratic republic of congo — a lake approximately 120 kilometres long and 60 kilometres wide, at an altitude of approximately 917 metres above sea level. the luapula river enters lake mweru from the south. the luvua river exits from the north, flowing into the congo river system and eventually to the atlantic ocean.

lake mweru is therefore a through-lake — a passage in the hydrological journey from the zambian plateau to the atlantic coast of central africa.

the kazembe kingdom — described in kingdoms part 7 as the most commercially sophisticated pre-colonial state in what is now zambia — was built on the fisheries, the salt resources, and the trade route position of the luapula-mweru system. the fish of lake mweru and the luapula river sustained the dense population of the valley. the kazembe court received both portuguese caravans from angola and swahili caravans from the indian ocean coast — sitting at the precise geographical intersection of those trade routes, levying tribute on both, growing wealthy on the margin between the two great commercial systems of the pre-colonial world. lake mweru was not merely the background to the kazembe kingdom. it was its economic foundation.

the lake today sustains one of zambia's most productive freshwater fishing economies. kapenta — the small sardine-like fish that is the dominant protein source across much of zambia, found in every market from lusaka to ndola — is harvested on lake mweru in significant quantities. bream, tigerfish, and catfish are also taken. the fishing communities on the zambian shore — concentrated in nchelenge and mwansabombwe districts — have fished these waters for generations. mwansabombwe, where mwata kazembe XIX led the mutomboko ceremony in july 2025, sits on the luapula river near its entry into lake mweru.

the lake's political geography is complex in ways the colonial partition created. the DRC's eastern shore falls within katanga province — separated from zambia by the lake's surface rather than a land border. fishing communities on both shores use the same lake, speak related languages, and maintain cross-border relationships that predate the existence of both nation states.

the lusenga plains national park and the mweru-wantipa national park sit in the plateau and escarpment country between lake mweru and lake tanganyika — two of zambia's less-visited but ecologically significant protected areas.
