Entry 41: Child Soldier and Drug Dealer
Paralogue 6: Herbal Remedy
Kazeβs daughter, Midori, leaves her deeprealm to bring him a rare herb. Along the way, she runs into a bandit mugging a man. The bandit threatens to kill her and Kaze saves her. Kaze comments that Midoriβs growing like a beanstalk and she says that sheβs an adult now, because the localization team really wants to remove the fact that this is a game about child soldiers and teenage brides.
Midori realizes that the man she saved somehow stole her herbs and Midori runs to get them back. She runs into Candace, a treasure hunter who runs off with the herbs. We then send in our entire army to murder this woman for stealing from a child. To be fair, the herbs do raise all stats by one, but still. An entire army is overkill.
This chapter is actually pretty cool. You have to defeat Candace as she flees through a twisting forest and can use Dragon Veins to make shortcuts to cut her off. Of course, it is also exploitable; Candace only wields a bow, so I was able to pin her against a wall and hold her there while I killed all of the other enemies for that sweet sweet EXP. Candace is actually a capturable boss, one with an interesting bit of trivia: Candace has a different body type from most Fates characters, which is cool, but also it means she canβt be reclassed because they didnβt add in overweight models for any other class.
After the battle, Kaze scolds Midori for endangering herself. Itβs kinda sweet seeing Kaze worry about his kid. Midori explains that she wants the herbs so she can grow stronger and return to the real world. Kaze lets her come with and join him in marching through enemy territory to assassinate an evil king, like any overprotective father would.
Midori
Kazeβs naive pharmacist daughter. Her design is okay, but goddamn is she young. Her personal skill boosts the activation of Luck based skills. The fact that Kana is also a naive small child who doesnβt like being in the baby dimension also kinda makes her feel irrelevant.
Support: Kaze/Midori
C: Midori concocts a new energy drink that smells and looks poisonous. Kaze drinks it, despite it being untested, to avoid upsetting his daughter.
B: Kaze offers to take Midori to look for herbs, but she decides to go alone because she doesn't want to waste his time.
A: Kaze apologizes for being a deadbeat. Midori says she just wants to spend time with him.
Review: Overall, a very disconnected Support. Kaze drinking poison to spare his daughterβs feelings is nice and Midori worrying her father hates her is a gut punch, but neither of these things are followed up on very well.
Support: Midori/Mother
C: Midori makes her mother ointment.
B: Midori yells at some other kids so they don't wander into a forest and gets yelled out for being annoying. She mopes that people treat her like the small child she is.
A: The kids Mirodri yelled at apologize because their mothers yelled at them. Midori decides that because she's reached the maturity of a twelve-year-old babysitter she counts as an adult.
Review: A bit bland. Also, why are their other children for her to chaperone? This game takes place in an active war zone!
Support: Corrin/Midori
C: Midori asks Corrin to help her collect herbs because she always gets lost in the woods.
B: Corrin and Midori look for herbs; Midori wanders off and Corrin tells her to carve Xs into trees.
A: Corrin tries putting a leash on Midori so she doesn't get lost. Also they say it doesn't matter that Midori gets lost in the woods because it gives her a reason to hang out with her friend Corrin.
Review: Overall this one is fairly mediocre. Corrin tripping Midori would work if it was shown, but the dialogue nature of Supports kills any slapstick.
Support: Moron/Midori
C: Corrin is feeling tired, so Midori gives him drugs. They don't work.
B: Midori makes Corrin more drugs that don't work. Midori promises to make Corrin feel better.
A: Corrin, after taking a nap, feels better. Corrin tells Midori that even though nothing she did affected anything her smiling made him recover faster.
S: Corrin tells Midori she needs to find someone to take care of her like she takes care of others. Midori chooses Corrin.
Review: I know Iβm sounding like a broken record, but I just donβt find Midori to be that interesting of a character.
