5 times Beverly and Kathryn almost went on a date but didn't
also here on ao3 and the timeline is wonky because I feel like it
One
(Academy era)
She wasnât pointing her toes right and Beverly knew it. Shescowled down at her feet, trying with thought alone to get them into theposition she needs to execute the right spin. In front of her her holo-date wasfrozen where she had the computer stop the program.
âI just need to get it rightâŚâ She muttered to herself androlled her shoulders back. The stress of the day was getting to her and sheâdneeded to work it off. The holodeck had been a last minute booking and shewouldnât have much time in it before someone else came to take over.
Exams loomed over her, her medical studies in the forefrontof her mind, but she tried to push them back as she stepped up on her rightfoot and pivoted.
It wasnât perfect, not even close to it but it was probablythe best she could do for the day.
She was about to open her mouth to tell the computer toresume the program when the sound of clapping behind her hand her jumping.
Beverly whirled to see another cadet standing near thedoorway of the holodeck.
âImpressive. I could never quite move like that.â The othercadet said. She was about a head smaller than Beverly, but there was somethingin the way she carried herself that made her seem taller. Command track,Beverly was betting, or if she wasnât on it yet she would get there eventually.âIâm not quite that flexible.â
Beverly smiled without even meaning to, a flirtatiousresponse on her lips before she could stop herself. âMaybe you just need theright dance partner.â
The other cadet arched an eyebrow, her eyes mischievous asshe walked closer. âMaybe I do.â Her long brown hair was tied back in aponytail and Beverly wondered idly what it looked like when not constrained.
She was about to offer her services as a teacher but anothercadet stumbled in at just that moment.
âJaneway!â He said, slightly out of breath, âI thought Iâdbeat you here.â
âYouâll have to do better than that.â The cadet, Janeway, countered with a smirk. Competitive, Beverly could deal with that.
The new cadet leveled Beverly with a confused look and thendrew himself up, âWe have the holodeck now. Computer end program.â
Her time on it must have run out quicker than she wasexpecting but the cadetâs rudeness had her scowling.
âSorry about that.â Janeway said, resting a hand on hershoulder. âMaybe next time Iâll be quicker and get a dance in.â
Her anger rushed out of her and Beverly winked. âBeverlyCrusher,â She introduced herself and made sure she brushed by Janeway as sheleft, knocking her hips against Janewayâs slightly. âIâll remember to save youone.â
  Two
(Academy era)
A flash of long brown hair stirred at Beverlyâs memories butshe couldnât quite place where. The Andorian ale was hitting her hard, thegraduation celebration was in full swing at the bar near Starfleet Academy.
Any minute now sheâd find herself on the dance floor, allshe needed was a partner.
That thought dragged her somewhat back to awareness- apartner. She hadnât seen Janeway since that night or gotten a dance.
Except now as she focused there Janeway was, standing at thebar.
âExcuse me.â She said to her friends, standing on slightlywobbly feet and making her way to the bar. She stood next to Janeway, silentfor a second before she put on her most winning smile. âI think you owe me adance.â
This time it was Janeway that jumped and turned to look ather. When she did she started laughing, loud and free and Beverly was drawn tothe way her head tilted and her hair fell over her shoulders and-
âI think I do.â Janeway stuck out a hand, âIâm KathrynJaneway, just so you know.â
Beverly reached out to take her hand, fully intending onleading Kathryn to the dance floor, when someone jostled her and her side feltsuddenly wet.
âSorry!â A voice yelped, somewhere to her other side andBeverly frowned as the drink that had been spilt on her started to seep underher clothes to her skin.
âJaneway!â Another voice yelled out, âWe need to go!â
Kathryn shot her an apologetic glance as a hand came over tograb her shoulder and pull her into the crowd leaving Beverly partnerless oncemore.
 Three
(two years after Jackâs death)
The science symposium was a marvel; Beverly was glad sheâdtaken the leave to go to it. She had dropped Wesley off with a friend on anearby station, only a brief shuttle ride away, and was looking forward to allthe talks. Afterwards sheâd spend some time with Wesley before they went backto Earth and her private practice.
Around her Starfleet officers milled about, going to theirown sessions and she felt a brief pang of longing â missing her uniformsuddenly.
Except sheâd left that when Jack died and maybe one day sheâdreturn to Starfleet but not yet, not while the wound was still too fresh.
A pair of Trills walked by and Beverly almost followed them, curious to know about their biology and the symbionts they carried when shespotted someone else that made her stop in her tracks.
It had been over five years but Beverly was certain that wasKathryn Janeway standing in front of her. Her long hair had been pulled into abun, somewhat no nonsense and that fitted the sharp knowing gaze that Kathryncarried. She was taller too though still not taller than Beverly herself.Seeing her brought back a burst of amusement in Beverly, she felt younger andlighter and â
Like she could use a dance.
Kathryn must have sensed eyes on her because she turned toface Beverly and Beverly watched as comprehension dawned on her. She walkedover, a sure steady stride that Beverly almost envied, and stopped in front ofBeverly.
âFancy meeting you here.â Kathryn said, the edges of herlips tilting upwards.
âIâm surprised you remember me.â Beverly replied, honestly alittle shocked.
âYou made an impression.â Kathryn assured her, resting ahand on her arm. âI donât suppose youâd like to get out of here? The foodâsmore fit for a Vulcan, no spices whatsoever and the replicators donât agreewith me.â
âThey donât agree with you or you donât agree with them?âBeverly teased and stuck her hands in the pocket of her coat, a strange guiltflooding her as she remembered she was still wearing her wedding ring.
Kathryn made a noise that could have been either anagreement or not. âI do know some places nearby. I had to scout out the areathe other night in preparation for this.â
It was certainly a tempting offer.
 It was also too soon.
Beverly gave her a tight and apologetic smile. âAnothertime.â
 Hopefully there would be one.
  Four
(set right before Voyager gets lost)
Beverly hadnât planned on stepping onto Deep Space Ninewhile the Enterprise was docked there but her supplies were lower than sheliked and she had wanted to talk to Bashir anyway. If only to tell him a fewthings about Worf â mostly things that could be used for teasing. Sheâd missedWorf on the Enterprise, the card games just werenât the same without him there.
The Enterprise had docked earlier so that Picard, Sisko, andJaneway could have a meeting regarding the Maquis. They were the foremostFederation officers involved in the hunt against the Maquis and were tradinginformation before Janeway set off on her mission; that much Beverly only knewbecause Picard had informed the bridge crew. Just the thought of the Maquismade her miss Ro and she sighed.
Too many people were missing these days, too many regretsand lost friendships were weighing on her mind.
Maybe while she was thinking about it she could also runinto Kathryn. The two had struck up a stilted sort of communications afterBeverly sent a message apologizing for her abrupt behaviour the last time theymet but they hadnât seen each other face to face since then.
As if summoned by her thoughts Kathryn walked out of theSecurity office and Beverly called out to her, smiling brightly when Kathrynturned around.
âI heard you were on still on the Enterprise.â Kathryn saidin greeting.
âAnd I heard youâd gotten your own command, congratulations.âBeverly reached out to squeeze Kathrynâs shoulder in comradery but then slidher hand down a little to rest it on Kathrynâs bicep. âFeel like a celebrationdrink?â
The smile on Kathrynâs face faltered and Beverly wonderedwhat was wrong for a moment until she looked down to see the ring on Kathrynâsfingers.
âAh,â She stepped back, âWell, we can still have that drink.â
This time Kathrynâs smile was the apologetic one. âHow aboutwe have it when Voyager gets back. We shouldnât be long.â
âIâll take your word on that.â
  Five
(before Voyager returns)
 You shouldnât be long?
Beverly looked at the note she was about to send through thePathfinder project. Deanna had told her if she had any messages to keep itshort and she wondered if Kathryn would get her drift.
No way to know until it was sent she thought and theresponse came nearly a week later.
 Things went a littlesideways.
Beverly chuckled under her breath at the understatement.
Think you couldschedule some time for a real chat over communications?
 Itâs a date.
She never made it to the building that day however, she didnâtneed to. Not when Voyager unexpectedly dropped into the Alpha Quadrant withouta single word and sent everyone into a flurry.
And the one time theygot their date
âI know how you feel about replicators so I took the libertyof turning mine off for the night.â Beverly couldnât resist the amused smirkshe sent Kathryn who rolled her eyes in return.
âSo long as thereâs still coffee with the desert I wonâtmind at all.â Kathryn took the dish that Beverly offered her and walked over toset it down at the table.
âThereâll be a dance before desert. Iâve waited long enough.âBeverly took her own plate over and sat down across from Kathryn, her eyessoftening slightly when she saw Kathrynâs pleased grin.
âIâve been told Iâm worth the wait.â
âI was told you werenât flexible.â Beverly joked back, recalling all those years ago when they had their first conversation.
âWell.â Kathryn paused before she took a sip of her wine. âIcould still learn a trick or two.â
âGood to know.â Beverly grinned brightly, âI can still showyou a trick or two.â
Or more. She had a few years worth of dates to make up forafter all and Beverly fully intended to.

The lesbian couple with a dozen dogs and cats because each of them have their preferences
Beverly likes designed old gothic mystery stories for Kathryn to use in the holdodeck. somehow they keep ending with Beverlyâs character kissing her and Kathryn is just amused.
I still like the idea that these two went to the Academy at the same time since theyâre only a year apart in age and probably spotted each other a few times and then got to talking (Bev took Kathryn to an old styled cafe with fancy coffee and laughed when Kathryn just ordered simple black coffee) and kept in touch while they were on assignments elsewhere and then Bev mourned her for a little while when Voyager got lost and they got in touch again through the Pathfinder project and Bev keeps her messages with âwhen you get homeâ never âifâ because she will see Kathryn again dammit
Kathryn teaches Bev how to play pool because theyâre not above being a team together on it and winning
Bevâs just an all day kinda of person, always awake when she needs to be because sheâs a doctor and thatâs just how itâs always been for her, Kathryn still isnât a morning person though and Bev schedules the replicator to start with coffee when the computer senses Kathrynâs awake and she appreciates it every time.
Bev still trips her up and switches it with other drinks sometimes, she just wishes she was there to see Kathrynâs face when she realizes it isnât coffee
Kathryn kisses her whenever they meet up again anyway despite that she says Bev will pay for that
Trek Femslash AUs Âť Kathryn/Beverly (requested by @janetfraiser)
âłAfter Kathryn gets back from the Delta Quadrant she finds her old Academy friend, Beverly, and picks up on their relationship. The only downside is that Beverly keeps switching her coffee to either decaf or tea in order to âhelp Kathryn live longer because she loves her that muchâ but Kathryn knows itâs just because Beverly is amused by it. She loves her back anyway.
send me a pairing and Iâll tell you the headcanons I have for them
continuing on from these ones:
Beverly teaches Kathryn how to dance even though she claims she has two left feet, it doesnât quite end well. Kathrynâs graceful in other areas of her life and they end up in a pile on the floor with Beverly laughing and Kathryn grumbling but still trying again anyway because itâs nice just to have those moments
Kathrynâs the one who plans a stealthy proposal, she has it all done up in an Victorian holodeck program and sheâs going to ask Beverly to marry her but of course the program malfunctions and Kathryn has to take control and when Beverly finds out all this in the middle of the program she pulls Kathryn in for a kiss and just grins at her and âI canât wait to see your plan for our honeymoonâ
Kathryn steals some of Beverlyâs comfy sweaters to wear during her days off and Beverlyâs stolen her grey undershirt before and neither of them say anything about and just smirk
Kathryn gets Beverly back for making her coffee decaf by pretending she canât play poker the same way she pretended she couldnât play billiards
Beverly brushes through Kathrynâs hair and hums in the morning and meets her eyes in the mirror with a soft smile and theyâre both not quite awake but itâs a moment theyâll both remember anyway

send me trek femslash pairs for my headcanons on them!
that smirking couple, like you know the ones that see something and just look at each other and both smirk like they know exactly what the other is gonna say. thatâs these two
Beverly has to leave earlier in the mornings, usually cause medical emergencies and always instructs the replicator to start coffee when Kathryn wakes up. sometimes she makes it decaf though as a joke and teases Kathryn about it
they have like Victorian adventure holodeck stuff together and enjoy getting dressed up for it and acting everything out.
Kathryn goes to everyone of Bevâs plays that she can, she always claps the loudest and kisses Bev in congratulations when Bev meets up with her afterwards
They actually both like the right side of the bed and take turns sleeping there but usually both of them end up on that side during the night, tucked in together and using the other as a pillow
okay but Beverly would stare whenever Kathryn wears the grey undershirt, you know she would
28, Seven/B'Elanna, 3, Kathryn/Beverly? Have you done them?
send me a pairing+ a cuddling prompt!
3. on the floor
~~
Kathryn hadnât been to her parents place in years, even before getting lost in the Delta Quadrant. The door still creaked just like she remembered it and a thick layer of dust covered everything, making her sneeze as she walked in the door.
âYou know I think Iâve seen a house like this in the holodeck before.â Beverly commented from behind her, juggling her bags in her hands.
Kathryn took one from her and set it down in the foyer with a bemused smile, âMy father liked his antiques.â
Beverly brushed past her and put her bags down, taking a step forward to look around the place. âI can tell. ItâsâŚâ
âOld?â Kathryn suggested, raising an eyebrow.
âRomantic.â Beverly threw back, turning just slightly to smile at Kathryn.
âWell it has itâs charms.â
âMuch like itâs owner I suppose.â Beverly teased as Kathryn shut the door.
âThank you.â Kathryn said quietly, âFor coming with me.â
There was a fondness in Beverlyâs eyes as she reached out to take Kathrynâs hand and squeeze it lightly. She only let go after a few seconds of holding Kathrynâs eyes with her own and then turned to set herself to the task at hand of cleaning up.
It took them hours and theyâd only just managed the first floor, night began to settle in around them and Kathryn had tried â and failed â to get the old replicator working.
âI see some things never change.â Beverly didnât bother to hide her amusement at Kathrynâs struggles with it.
âBy all means.â Kathryn waved her hand towards, welcoming Beverly to give it a try.
âI think this is why I replicated sandwiches for us before we left.â Beverly reached down to dig them out of a bag theyâd placed on the table. âAnd,â She continued, rescuing them from the bag, âI think I know a better place to eat them.â
Kathryn followed her, curious where they were heading and chuckled when she noticed that Beverly had gotten the fireplace lit and placed a blanket nearby it.
âNow this is romantic.â Kathryn said and took a seat on it next to Beverly. Beverly set the food down and leaned against her, resting her head on Kathrynâs shoulder and they both took a minute to just appreciate the fire.
Kathryn turned her head to press a kiss to Beverlyâs hair, drawing Beverly closer to her by wrapping an arm around her and sighing contently. Beverly responded by pressing her hand against Kathrynâs hip and tilting her head up for a proper kiss.
The food could wait a little while longer, they were both comfortable right where they were.
Kathrynâs biggest surprise from the Pathfinder project comes when she gets messages from someone she went to the academy with, Beverly. They were friends but never that close but Beverly reaches out to her through it to say sheâs glad that Kathrynâs still alive. They trade these messages back and forth, getting to know each other in a way that they didnât all those years ago and it grows fond and Kathryn knows now that when, never if, she gets home Beverly will meet her there with a smile
