#kateto

Kateto, meaning the leg of a right triangle, comes from the Esperanto word for cat (cat). The -et- affix is the diminutive in Esperanto, so the word literally means “kitty”, or “small cat” (not to be confused with “katido”- kitten). I’m not sure why legs of a right triangle are called “kitties” in Esperanto, but they are for some reason. La adicio de la kvadratoj de la du katetoj egalas la kvadrato de la hipotenuso en orta triangulo (The sum of the squares of the two legs equals the square of the hypotenuse in a right triangle.)
