5. help
That winter found Henry in a cast, maneuvering about the farmhouse over rickety crutches and barking orders at the Seeds, who had made the mistake of offering their assistance to him in his time of need. They’d thought helping him with housework would be an easy way to endear themselves to him.
They’d been sorely mistaken.
“Cedar goes with the kindling pile, not the rest of the wood!” Henry snapped, glaring down at the offending bundle in Jacob’s arms.
“What’s the fuckin’ difference?” Jacob growled back.
“The fuckin’ difference is I’m not wasting good kindling by using only it in the fire. Put that shit in the right place before I beat your ass with it.”
Jacob muttered idle threats under his breath as he followed the orders. If Joseph thought Jacob would be welcoming Henry Bishop into his bunker when the collapse finally came, he had another thing coming.
