Karsikkopuu is an old tradition in finnish mythology and folklore. It is usually a big tree, such as pine or spruce. When someone died people used to carve the deceased's initials and year of death to the tree. The purpose was to join the deceased to the underworld, and to prevent them to return and haunt the living.
