I did LOVE the Ginkgo I found here. Sadly it had already dropped all of it leaves, but the golden carpet it had created was quite impressive!
At the point the hike returned to town back on all trails I decided to abandon it.

I’ve got a few things to see today in the Nikko area, partially because I’m being a bit stubborn and want to feel like I’ve seen enough to justify the travel time; especially when I had so much I wanted to see in Kyoto. (I should have just called it a loss & gone back to Tokyo or maybe checked out one of the day trips from Nikko.)
With frost still on the ground, I set off on a hike to Kanmangafuchi, a so-called “abyss” that’s actually just an especially fast section of the main Daiya River. It’s not great for abyss like views (and easily confused with another abyss near the same area that also starts with K), but there are a number of red-capped jizo statues along the start of the trail.
Supposedly you cannot count the same number of statues twice while going up/down the path.
I wonder how much of this is due to some of the statues being more obviously statues than others- some are more like rock piles.
You could save yourself time by just walking the section with the statues, as the rest of the hike is very underwhelming.
It takes you past an old water plant of some kind, past some small woods, and to a bridge.

Today’s Obon ghost story takes us to Kanmangafuchi, a narrow gorge that's formed by the river that runs through Nikko. The path that leads into Kanmangafuchi is lined with about 70 statues of Jizō. There used to be 100, but several washed away during a flood in 1902. They're called Hyaku Jizō (one hundred Jizō) or Narabi Jizō (Jizō in a line). It's said that if you count the statues while walking in opposite directions along the path, you never get the same total, no matter how often you re-count. That's why they're also called Bake Jizō (ghost Jizō).
nikko - japan.
last weekend, dana, edith and i stayed one night in the beautiful town of nikko. it turned out to be an absolutely beautiful weekend - nice weather and great sightseeing. we visited nikko's most famous shrine, the toshogu shrine, saw the kegon falls and shinkyo sacred bridge. we also went for an afternoon hike to the kanmangafuchi abyss, where we saw about 70 jizo statues wearing red hats staring out onto the river.
Japan Tour - Agosto del 2010 -- Kanmangafuchi Abyss, Nikko, in Tochigi Prefecture. Daiya River runs through this gorge. Walking through the forest path you will find a Jizo statues, also called Bake-Jizo (Ghost Jizo), because when these statues are counted, their number seems to change.
