yo does anyone remember kaneva? it was kinda like second life except waaaaaay more basic. like, I remember they gave you like your own apartment (I always had the music video for pray for plagues playing on my tv), and you would get like $1 of whatever their currency was when you showed up to the bank every day. or something like that. idr. I played it A LOT back when I had swine flu to keep my mind off of how sick I felt.
Sigh... I wish virtual worlds were still a thing. I mean, I know games like IMVU still exists, but most other things shut down.
Games like World of Kaneva, vSide (god I loved that game), There.com (which relaunched at one point but it's pretty much a ghost town now), OurWorld... Then there's Smallworlds that relaunched under a different name, but it's pretty empty too and it just doesn't feel the same. I also remember Mini Match from Cartoon Network; I remember it being such a calm and cool experience.
Now I know some of these might be viewed through a nostalgia lense, but I miss them so much. Everytime I see photos of them, my favorite virtual world games that are shutdown, I still try to click on the website with some absurd hope that maybe, just maybe, it's back.
But it's not.
I miss the virtual worlds so much. Gosh. I know this isn't exactly art (as in drawings), but games are art too, right? So... Technically related. Anyway... Yeah.
Great talk from Kaneva! From the march GGDA meeting, but still worth a look!

When Your Virtual World Disappears
Some years ago I joined a nifty virtual world called Kaneva. I spent a fair amount of time there, learned how to make some basic things, went to some parties, met some friends and had a pretty nice time. I had been in the Second Life grid for about a year or so at that point and I quite liked the simple and intuitive design Kaneva offered, and especially the price – free apartment loft and land…

This is the best video game of all time. I cannot believe that people have not found this sooner. Yes, my face is Sylvester Stallone. Yes, one of those is me dancing with a bro in front of a scale model RMS titanic built piece by piece ingame.
