review: KAI -`walls don’t talk´
he did it again: KAI’s “walls don’t talk” is a gently catchy feel-good song after a second listen already, and it will age like fine wine as a laidback atmospheric anthem. especially if you like more hypnotic, monotonous, flowing beats. the departure from rover, peaches, mmmh, and his work with exo is obvious: it’s a softer, calmer, juicier feel now. the opposite of “OBSESSION” if you think about it. no longer going all out, just enjoying the moment. his easiest on the heart and ear song yet, and kai is known for great production, mind you.
in fact, it’s a complete rebrand. adult swim was already a whole new side to his artistic intent, and ushers in a new era. even the writing of the song reflects it: where kai once dominated fully, always in your face, passionate to the brim, direct without any hesitation, he now beckons “take the lead/call the shots”, hoping no one past his apartment will listen. what a surprise that is, because we’ve hardly seen and heard kai this subtle, playful, and coy.
walls don’t talk has an interesting and smooth song structure, empty arena production, little rap accents, that infectious thumping beat, chill feeling, cheeky and intimate lyrics that fit his always more physical concepts, and his voice is all-round perfect here. in concert, it’ll be easy to groove along. the MV is deliberately low budget, fuzzy, colorful, seductive, urban, sex appeal-heavy. i can’t wait for the choreo and album. the song is amazing on repeat just like “nothing on me”, “come in”, “ride or die”, and “amnesia” were. kai still got it everyone, the summer is saved.
