Mama Kageyama moving the family for whatever reason, and they end up near the ever-bustling Sawamura family.

Daichi is 100% the first one to ask if Kageyama wants to play, wondering over with big brown eyes and an even bigger smile. i think Kageyama would be a little hesitant at first—i see him as timid around strangers as a kid—but very quickly warms up to him, especially when Daichi holds up a volleyball.

because of the move, Kageyama ends up attending Izumitate, the same junior high school as Daichi, rather than Kitagawa Daiichi. Kageyama doesn’t know anyone, and due to his difficulty with socializing, he doesn’t make many friends. however, Daichi takes every chance he gets to stop by Kageyama’s classroom to check up on him to make sure he’s doing okay (he sneaks him snacks too, because he likes to see Kageyama smile). Daichi eats lunch with him, and everyone thinks it’s so cool.

he makes sure to walk to school with Kageyama no matter the weather, and they always walk home together after volleyball practice, often talking about silly things and stopping to crouch down for the stray cats that linger around the neighborhood.

when it comes time for Daichi to graduate and move on to high school, Kageyama can’t quite figure out how to put his feelings into words. on their last walk home from school together, he takes off his scarf and stiffly offers it to Daichi. “Keep it,” he says, cheeks a rosy pink. “In- in case you get cold when you walk to Karasuno.”

and Daichi’s touched. he gives him his mittens, still warm from his hands. “I know your hands get cold, so—” and he stops, voice muffled by Kageyama’s shoulder. thin arms wrap around him, squeeze him as tight as they can. “K-Kageyama?” and then less worried, more relieved as he hears Kageyama sniffle. “Ahh, don’t cry! I’m not leaving!” he gently hugs him back, head resting against the other’s. “Tobio-kun, I’ll be waiting for you at Karasuno, okay?”

Kageyama nods, still sniffling.
