@kaelang12 --good question!
The version most people are probably familiar with is the 1990 movie version with Gérard Depardieu as Cyrano. It’s not my favorite, but it does serve as a decent entry point--you get to hear Rostand’s poetry in the original language and verse structure, the costumes and sets are beautiful, and the supporting cast is very good.
My personal favorite version, the one I saw first that got me to fall in love with the show, is the 1950 movie with José Ferrer as Cyrano. He had played the role on Broadway just a few years before, and the movie very much feels like a filmed version of the stage play. It doesn’t look quite as lush and cinematic as the 1990 version, but Ferrer’s performance alone is worth the price of admission. He is a goddamn marvel as Cyrano--he’s got charisma coming out of his ears, and he perfectly balances the humor, showmanship, and pathos that the character needs. Mala Powers and William Prince are also really charming as Roxanne and Christian, and Morris Carnovsky is probably my favorite Le Bret. The whole cast has great chemistry with each other, and it more than makes up for how stagey the movie can look at times. And the best news is, it’s available for free on YouTube!
I also highly reccommend the 2008 Great Performances production with Kevin Kline as Cyrano. He plays the character a little more... easygoing, for lack of a better word? He’s slightly more laid-back in his performance than Ferrer--the Ballade Duel scene is a great example just from his fighting style--but they’re both capable of walking into a room like they own the place and commanding everyone’s attention. In fact, Kline might be my second favorite Cyrano actor, if not tied for first alongside Ferrer. The supporting cast is also excellent all around--Jennifer Garner plays Roxanne a bit too broadly for my tastes, but Daniel Sunjata as Christian is adorable, and Chris Sarandon is hands-down my favorite de Guiche.
Those are the three I would start with, particularly the latter two, and then you can have fun branching out from there!
kaelang12 replied to your post: The Eurovision home concerts are both heartwarming...
the WHAT
The Eurovision YouTube channel is hosting live home events from a full spectrum of years with people performing their songs from home and then a watcher-voted cover of another Eurovision song.
Miraculously not geo-locked! It’s fun to see how some of them go for hardcore presentation and others play up ‘i sure am stuck in my house with no props and i’m wearing a shower curtain’

what is your absolute favorite fact about the goodsir fam?
i really like how loved they seemed to be - like the fact that over 200 people went to john’s funeral or how harry basically got his job as a conservator at the surgeon’s hall museum (aside from john’s rec) because he was known to be smart and nice
also they were just kinda buckwild at times like when joseph challenged the entire scientific community because of a perceived slight against john or how robert almost ended up in an australian prison!
the duality of the goodsir family - soft and wild
If you could turn any live-action movie into an animated version, what would it be?
I think the Raid films would easily translate into animation especially in the anime world.

Meme time!

- Nickname: None, really - everyone just calls me Steph (full name is Stephanie, though) - Zodiac: Taurus - Height: 5′2″, same as one of my favorite comedians, incidentally - Last movie I saw: I think the last full-length thing I had a chance to sit down and watch was Love, Gilda. I cried. - Last thing I Googled: “Augustus Pax Monument” - Song stuck in my head: I Can Talk - Two Door Cinema Club - Other blogs: My art blog, the blog for Londinium, Comedian Heaven, Ask Rogue Squadron, and numerous others both on this website and in other places - Do I get asks: On occasion! They’re always welcome. - Following: 2,651, but a lot of those are likely dead blogs. I have 1,907 following me right now, but again, a ton of those are dead blogs because I’ve been on this website for 10 years now. - Amount of sleep: Now that I’m on a regular sleep schedule due to having a full-time job with benefits, a consistent amount! I usually go to bed around 3 am and wake up around 10:30 am, as I work the night shift at my job. - Lucky number: 454, according to a scale in a rest stop in New York State - What I’m wearing: Right now, my pajamas because I’ve been sick the past few days (I’m better now, though!) - Dream job: Keeper of the Archives, Bodleian Library, Oxford University - Dream trip: Angkor Wat and a baseball tour of Japan are both on my bucket list. - Favorite food: Fried rice! - Play any instruments: I am honestly terrible at playing things. Since I have a good ear this distresses me. I attempted flute in school for three years and was miserably bad at it. I’m thinking of taking piano lessons now as an adult. - Languages: New York/New Jersey English is my first language, but I can understand rhyming slang (don’t ask) and I took Japanese and Italian in college. My Italian is a little better because I am terrible with kanji. - Favorite songs: Too many to list here, but I’ve been listening to a lot of Two Door Cinema Club lately. I listen to a lot of classical, too, and then I have a Eurovision playlist...and a lot of J-pop and K-pop...and 90s dance music... - Random fact: My entire immediate family, myself included, is left-handed. - Describe yourself as aesthetic things: ...am I an aesthetic? I have no idea what I remind anyone of. I don’t really describe myself in metaphors. Like...do people think of me when they smell old books because that’s my job (I’m an archivist)? Or when they smell garlic? When they see a cat that grew far larger than it was supposed to grow? Or when they see comedy double acts, or baseball, or the color British racing green? I honestly have no clue.
