An extra excerpt from Hawwa on appreciating art through learning how to create a self-portrait: “Self-portraits are so detailed and call for so much attention. That attention makes you appreciate other people’s art especially other self-portraits. Or once you learn the history about it as well, it makes more sense. Like if I’m looking at a Van Gogh piece, I’ll be like, ‘That’s Van Gogh with a hat.’ Now I’ll go back and be like, ‘Dang. That’s Van Gogh with a hat and his face is really serious and his life must be really hard.
