This letter from John Wayne Gacy was found at Prospect High School by a coworker of mine and he’s been in the news recently for the finding. Tomorrow he has a meeting with Sam L. Amirante, Gacy’s defense attorney. The letter was written November 25, 1990. The letter reads:
Thank you for your letter of November 12th, received on the 23rd of November. Regarding your school project and class assignment. I will do my best to help you out. Much has been written about me, yet I never granted an interview in over ten years. So 80% of what is written about me is fantasies, theories, and media hype. I trust your(sic) learning in school that media and book can slant and distort things for sensationalism, with no regards for fact or the truth. In answers to your questions I will take them in the order you have listed them. 1/ What do you do while you’re in jail? First off I am not in jail but a Max prison called Menard Correctional Center; Death row along with 53 others. My time is spent keeping up with my correspondences, legal appeal, and arguing with the prison administration over their harassment, discrimination, and its corruption. But I am treated the same as all others, nothing special. 2/ What do I do with my art work? Well for eight years I used to sell it like some 21,000 other inmates are allowed to do, but no longer since I complained about staff members stealing my art out of the mail, caught them dirty. I am no longer allowed to sell my art work at this time, but I am fighting the kind of discrimination through the legal system. 3/ How do I get along with other inmates? I am around 12 who are in my unit. (Indecipherable) we get along, the thing to learn in prison is to mind your own business you don’t mess with someone elses time, as all are working on their appeals. 4/ Are you under doctors care so you won’t hurt anybody or kill anybody else? No, but you are assuming and have been brainwashed with the media infamous monster image, and I am the man not the fantasy. 5/ When in your cell, do you wish things you’d done you did differently? Yeah I would have went with my gut feeling and got a defense attorney who would have investigated the case, and not sold out for money and glory. Instead the truth and the facts of this case never came out. If it was handled right other would be sitting where I am now. Besides if I were so guilty as the prosecutors would like you to believe then I would have nothing to appeal, and that’s not so. Your(sic) assuming my guilt from what you have read what you should be doing is keeping an open mind as there is always more then(sic) one side to a story. Just like I did not receive justice neither did the victim’s families. So my trial was more of convenience with fantasy/Theories to take the heat of public pressure. Even a few honest cops will tell you that. If I am guilty of anything its(sic) for being gullible and trusting. We live in a blood thirsty society and its(sic) easy to blind people with sensationalism and hype spoon fed from a greedy news media who have no regards for truth or fact. And its(sic) not only in my case Just read howthe media distorts any story that you may have some of the facts about. Keep an open mind, stay in school, as education is security for the future. Your parents are your best friend, you may not always agree with them, but they are on your side. Please use my number when writing as the correct address is on the top of page one, should you need more information. Keep your faith in GOD and be true to yourself. Sincerely, John W. Gacy”
