Ya know, Arrow really blows at romance, like no really. Which sucks because while Ollie and Dinah aren’t a couple I love or ship in the comics but what’s bugging me is that I know spoilers for s3 and I’m confused as hell as to how they get there.
I’m halfway through s2, and frustrated because the show is trying hardcore to be Batman Nolan style. Currently the only moderately interesting characters is Roy and Laurel. I like Diggle, but I don’t find him interesting. Ollie is just bland, he’s every other privileged white dude superhero who mangst ever. There’s nothing new here, I literally just watched this character in Batman Begins. I mean jesus what even is this island?
Did Ollie accidentally wander onto the evil twin of LOST? This island business is ridiculous. I do like the action, the stunts are pretty well done, even if it’s just plain silly that a drawn down hood and some green facepaint is what’s keeping Ollie’s identity a secret. I can’t even enjoy the camp value because the show is so serious. Which just makes Felicity in turn a really awkward character.
She’s basically Google but with an awkward would-be nerdish girl persona. She’s their Oracle without any of the interesting layers that made Babs who she was. Which makes sense since she was a two bit side comic book character. But I’m so confused as to her just plain wild popularity in fandom and same with her relationship with Ollie.
Since currently he’s like, still in love with Laurel. And while I don’t have any investment in their relationship, it feels weird if they don’t get together because of the comics. I felt the same with Ollie hooked up with Chloe in Smallville but then they didn’t push Dinah in that show like they did Ollie so I got it. I didn’t like it, but I got the why. I’m not sure of the why here. Chemistry is completely subjective. People could argue that Laurel and Ollie have no chemistry, but I don’t see chemistry between Ollie and like, anyone on the show. Except maybe Diggle. Actually yeah so far Diggle is the only one with natural chemistry with Ollie, their relationship feels real and organic. I like it.
At this point I’m really only interested in seeing Laurel become the Black Canary (this plot with here sister Sara is dumb sorry but it’s rendered pointless by the fact we all knew/know Laurel was going to become BC) and Roy (which is surprising because I’m not a fan of Colton at all).
