"Sculptor" by Junyi Wu

A sculptor is able to shape and mold marble, wood, and stone -- materials far stronger than their own flesh and bone. A sculptor’s control over these raw elements results in work that can exist on a larger scale and survive a timeline longer than the artist’s own time on this Earth. As a catalyst for change, the sculptor gives the medium a new form, along with new meaning and purpose. In turn, the creation leaves a message for years to come.

Upright, this card represents the creator, and that person’s unique creative vision. Each work of art is an extension of its maker. Artwork tells the viewer about the themes, stories, emotions, and important influences relevant to the time it was created. In many ways each work is a time capsule that allows future viewers to glimpse into the mind of an artist at the point the piece was made. This card represents an appreciation for the story of both the creator and the creation. The card also represents the changing of forms and metamorphosis, as well as perspective, artistic creation, and making the best of what is given.

Reversed, this card symbolizes the relationship between the viewer and the work of art on an individual level. The sculptor is not always able to control how a viewer sees their work, and occasionally the message within the creation is misinterpreted or lost. Though the artist’s statement may not always accompany the work, an appreciation of the process the artist went through to create may be enough.

Junyi Wu is Chinese/Taiwanese illustrator and designer based out of Orange County, California. She graduated from Art Center College of Design in 201_ and has since then been featured in numerous art and design publications and galleries like Juxtapoz, CMYK magazine, Light Grey Art Lab, and Gallery Nucleus for her dreamy, quiet colored pencil illustrations filled with dynamic, swirling marks and hazy clouds of vibrant color.
