What do you think of Jason and Juno's relationship? What were they? A queen and her blade, and sometimes, very rarely, tinged with a certain motherly affection- that's almost not there. What is Jason to Juno? Just a connection to the mortal world, her champion? Jason was the executioner of her will. Do you think she ever felt, even in the slightest, some maternal affection? I sometimes headcanon that Jason, son of Jupiter, perhaps embodied more of Juno than his father sometimes or usually. Their relationship had so much potential! Jason and Juno had every right to be explored as a more nuanced characters. Juno was the patron goddess of Rome and all, but also the goddess of motherhood. And somehow, perhaps against her own knowledge, embodied its every flaw to perfection. She saw a hero she had to shape into greatness, not anything more. Not a boy who had never felt the unconditional love of a parent. She didn't know what to do with a small Jason, barely five, staring up at her in awe, and love and admiration. (Not Jason having double mommy issues, from both Beryl and Juno). We see through how she mourns Jason in ToA that she did love him, in her own twisted way. She loved him, though she couldn't express it in a way that mattered. What's the point of a love that was never known? Jason died knowing he was not loved. The soldier she built died as one. A hero. Her champion. Does she regret it? Never knowing him? Stripping him of his identity? (I love them SO much. We have tragic father son dynamics, and tragic mother daughter dynamics, we don't nearly have enough mother-son dynamics.) So, my questions, in short, are: What do you think of Jason and Juno's relationship? What do you think could be explored about them? How do you think their relationship dynamics were like?
Anon, I am so sorry for how long it took me to answer, I was struggling to find an answer for what you've given me.
I do think a lot about this, and I like to imagine the implications.
Now, Anon, ive been trying to find a good way to respond, to add something insightful, maybe find a piece of Canon that I can add in, something to answer your question in a way that feels right.
You asked what I think of Jason and Juno. But you've described it pretty well. I suppose the best answer I could provide for you is the weapon she grew to enjoy.
He is her perfect weapon. A perfect soilder. But shes a goddess, he was her project. She loved him, but only when it was too late. Only when he died before she could learn it herself.
The idea that Jason embodies Juno more does have merit, ill say. We see it in how he fights, how he throws himself out there. Jupiter would do no such things. Perhaps Juno would though.
Though this doesnt exactly answer your questions. So ill try.
Jason and Junos relationship to me, is a soilder groomed to be a sword and shield and she was the one to display it on her wall. And no matter how hard she tried to keep it that way, she must've grown to look at that shield as the baby in the woods. But not until he was dead.
I believe what could have been explored more was how this translates to her reaction in his battles. We've seen her grieving when he dies. Does she stress when hes close to it? Does she get the urge to tilt the scales in his favor? Has she ever followed through? How does her domains interfere with keeping him her sharpened sword and shield?
I believe their relationship to be complicated at best. She cares for him after he died, but he died as a weapon, not a child. He died like a Greek. Her roman died a Greek. Im sorry if this particular answer disappoints you, but thats how I can best explain it.
I believe their relationship to be nuanced, complicated, full of symbolism, tragedy. And i wish Rick explored it more.
But Anon, if youd like, send me another ask, answer a question or three for me.
What do you think this means for Thalia? Does anything change in Hera/Junos mind about her? Does she believe she should have bedn more or less attached? And does she resent the events that led up to this?
I'm curious to hear your thoughts, if you'll humor them.
And once again, im terribly sorry if this wasnt what you expected, or if it disappointed you.
