Junk put out their debut EP ‘Eyes Shut’ back in March via Squareglass, coming on limited edition vinyl housed in hand printed sleeves.
It’s the project of a SE London based writer and producer who has built a live band around him, including Amy Spencer of Leiik who provides the vocals on the first 2 EP tracks ‘Eyes Shut’ and ‘Over’.
Together they create a rich, atmospheric and textural sound that envelops the senses. The shuffling percusion, electronic pulses and found sounds (such as birdsong reportedly captured in the lake district) remind me a little of Slime. They are also two of the very very few artists whose use of a saxophone I can not just tolerate, but enjoy!
Horrible things saxophones...
I’ve not had the pleasure of witnessing Junk perform these luscious tunes live yet, but it’s apparently an upbeat, dancey affair compared to the relatively downbeat sounds on offer here on the EP. Well if they don’t play some more gigs soon I might just have to put one on myself.
