Peter I of Serbia: The Birth of a Future King
On June 29, 1844, Peter Karađorđević was born in Belgrade, Serbia. The son of Prince Alexander Karađorđević, Peter would later become King of Serbia and one of the most respected rulers in Serbian history.
After years of exile and political struggles, Peter returned to Serbia and became king in 1903 following the overthrow of the Obrenović dynasty. His reign was marked by constitutional reforms, greater parliamentary freedoms, and Serbia’s rise as a major Balkan power.
Known as “Peter the Liberator,” he led Serbia during the turbulent years of the Balkan Wars and the beginning of World War I. His support for national unity and democratic principles helped shape Serbia’s modern identity before his death in 1921.
