Why does the alphabet begin with the letter A? The long-held speculation that its origin from a sign designating “ox” made it the first in line because of the ox’s meeting the first of our survival needs — food — seems a stretch. Beyond B for beth meaning “house” (shelter) and C for gimel meaning “hunting stick” (in case we run out of oxen), what needs do the other twenty-three letters represent?…

Not Yet, Zebra!
Not Yet, Zebra by Lou Kuenzler and Julia Woolf is a wonderfully illustrated alphabet rhyming book. The book uses different animals to teach each letter of the alphabet. Not only are there illustrations of each letter there are illustrations of each animal also! This picture book helps with talking and writing. It’s also great for building print awareness and vocab.
We found a fun alphabet zebra craft at Crystal and Company. Here’s how ours turned out, but be sure to visit them for the free printable pattern plus rhymes and songs that explore the letter Z!
All you need is:
1 large piece of construction paper, any color except black or white
1 large piece of white of white construction paper
1 small sheet of black construction paper
Gluestick or liquid school glue
1 googley eye
1 black crayon or marker
Safety scissors
Draw a large Z on white construction paper and cut it out. Glue it to your colored construction paper. Cut rectangles from the black paper for the zebra’s stripes, a half-circle for the nose, and a triangle for the ear (remember, there’s a pattern you can print!)
Glue all the pieces together and add the eye. You can add the zebra’s mane and tail with the black marker. This activity is perfect for engaging a child’s creative side and also helps reinforce print awareness (which means noticing print everywhere and recognizing that it has meaning)!
