The Ruin of Evangeline Jones by Julia Bennet

Love can sneak up on a couple before they know it and seemingly when neither has any reason to fall for the other. And since all Alex, the duke of Harcastle, really wants to do is prove that Miss Evangeline Jones is a fake spiritualist what COULD they have in common? One thing is chemistry and the other is the ability to care for others and then we should not forget that neither had an easy childhood. I wasn’t sure what to expect but did find a very enjoyable story and now wonder how I missed the first book in this series!

What I liked:

* The plot, story and writing

* The real feel of the story

* The interactions between the main characters

* Evangeline: raised to be someone she really did not want to be

* Mags: Evangeline’s friend

* Alex: he grew on me...and finally saw the light

* Ellis: Alex’s cousin who may have gotten more than he bargained on by the end of the book

* Alex’s sister and her husband: I believe their story was told in the first book of the series. I hope they will show up in future books to find out how they are doing

* Reading a new-to-me author that I want to read more books by

What I did not like:

* The Captain: a malicious user with a long game revenge plan

* Being reminded of how difficult it was to make ends meet when one was not wealthy in 1888 England

* Not knowing if one of the characters survived or not

Did I enjoy this book? Yes

Would I read more in this series? Definitely

I love that we've created a space where people really feel safe. Within that we are constantly being presented with life challenges, and I love that we are committed to looking at those challenges and working through them no matter how difficult it is. That's what's keeps the heart in this place. 

Your Third Root story:

I learned to do acupuncture in the underground activist movement back in the late 70s / early 80s. I knew some the people involved in developing the Lincoln Detox program in the Bronx. Some of them were my mentors, and I got excited about the work that was being done so I went there and learned the NADA protocol. It was still pretty much underground then; there were no certifications. I used to volunteer -- especially during the height of the AIDS pandemic. We treated a lot of people with AIDS and people who were addicted to substances.

University of South Carolina senior Julia Bennett got the inspiration for her series of photos of diatoms in her Marine Biology 101 class freshman year.

While studying abroad in Australia a few years alter, Bennett collected samples of the tiny plankton and photographed them with a lens specially designed for microscopes.

"Sitting in Marine Biology 101 during her first year at the University of South Carolina, Julia Bennett was peering through a microscope at a slide of squirming diatom plankton when wonder struck.

“They look like something constructed for a science fiction movie,” said Bennett, now a senior. “We were making drawings and recording numbers and doing all this science stuff, and I couldn’t get over how perfect and symmetrical and intricate they are. I thought, ‘Why doesn’t everyone want to look at these?’”

So began Bennett’s fascination with capturing the least charismatic—but most critical—of ocean creatures under a magnification 40-100 times their normal size."
