Toronto rap prodigy Tara Lord unveils the brand new music video for her latest hit, ‘Praying’. She says, “’Praying’ is a very emotional song for me, I expressed what I was feeling in the moment and kinda just let it all out in the booth. I wrote the song while I was having a mental breakdown and put all my frustration into words. A lot of people’s mental health, including mine, has been suffering due to the pandemic and I feel like this song expresses that well.” [via Purple Melon]
Boston-based rapper Oompa makes music as empowering as it is energizing and sonically unique, and her latest single ‘Lebron’ is no exception. In the beat-driven track, her powerful voice raps about independence, confidence, and trusting yourself. “I’m the judge/And the jury/And I call it how I see it,” she declares in the first verse, going on to interweave biblical and basketball references alike into an upbeat self-esteem anthem. Oompa came up with the idea to sing about pro basketball player Lebron James when she was contemplating who embodied “that feeling of feeling like a bad bitch,” she explains. “I was like, who must feel like a bad bitch all the time? It’s between Drake and Lebron — it’s got to be Lebron. It doesn’t matter what conversation Lebron is in — he just seems so unaffected by people’s opinions, and he outperforms himself. It seems like he’s always in competition with himself.” The video for ‘Lebron,’ features Oompa shooting hoops and dancing on the basketball court with friends. “It’s really about seeing the city come together and having a great time on the court,” she says. However, it also alludes to the story of how the rapper got her stage name. “I used to play basketball at Washington Park, and all the older kids would call me ‘Oompa Loompa baby’ because I was short and chubby,” she recalls. This, for her, was a Lebron moment — not just because she was playing basketball, but also because she put herself out there and didn’t worry about what other people thought. [via Audiofemme]

Haviah Mighty’s recent singles are continuing to solidify her status as one of the most exciting voices in today’s underground hip-hop scene. As another preview of her forthcoming mixtape, Stock Exchange, the Toronto rapper has shared the new single ‘Flamenco,’ which boasts guest vocals from Latin Grammy Award-winning artist Mala Rodríguez. Co-produced by Haviah and her repeat collaborator Taabu, ‘Flamenco’ expectedly draws from Spanish and Latin influences. Its reggaeton beat calls to mind sardine-packed dance floors, or — perhaps more appropriate for the times — sweltering block parties in city streets. “With this one, I wanted to try something different,” Haviah said in a statement. “Inspired by the cultural influences behind flamenco, this song allowed me to be a guest in a new genre. Mala Rodríguez really brought this record home — her verse added authenticity, sensuality, and pizzazz. She has a great voice and message, and with her Spanish roots, I felt that she spoke to the energy of the song more directly than I ever could.” [via Consequence]
Like the Lego-sponsored ‘Link,’ Tierra Whack’s new song ‘8′ is another example of Whack doing some for-hire work. ‘8′ is Whack’s contribution to the soundtrack of Madden 22, the latest game in the long-running NFL franchise. Rapper/singer Kari Faux has announced a deluxe edition of last year's very good Lowkey Superstar, with four new songs, three remixes, and features from J.I.D, Smino, Yung Baby Tate, Deante' Hitchcock, and Jazz Cartier. It comes out September 24 via Don Giovanni Records and Kari's own Lowkey Superstar Records, and the first single is the melodic, future-soul of ‘Too Much, Too Fast’ (ft. Deante' Hitchcock), which Kari says "is about a new relationship that could have potential, but each person’s wants is different: one wants to get close quickly, but the other really just wants sex."
