Jugulator is a very interesting song. I love the intro. Also I almost wouldn’t notice Judas Priest had a different singer for this song if I wasn’t actively aware of it. Shame they decided to sweep the Tim Ripper Owens era under the rug (basically the phrase TVTropes used) because I would willingly listen to this song more if I could
Also Brain Dead is on Jugulator so that’s cool
Monday, February 28: Judas Priest, “Death Row” [ENCORE]
The Today’s Metal Tune tumblr launched March 3, 2014. To celebrate 8 years of METAL, this week we are revisiting some favorites from our early days, showcasing memorable deep cuts from legendary and semi-legendary acts. A huge THANK YOU to everyone who’s followed, liked, reblogged and commented over the years, there is still a lot more metal to come…
“Death Row” was arguably the best Priest song to come out of the Ripper Owens years, and not coincidentally it was the track that sounded most like something Rob Halford would have sung on. The riffing was nasty and aggressive, Scott Travis’ drums propelled the track forward with Painkiller-level intensity, and Ripper was actually pretty awesome on the monster chorus. Jugulator held up better than one might think: it tried way too hard to sound “modern”, and the lyrics were singularly awful, but there were good ideas buried beneath the compressed production (and some of these ideas and arrangements would make their way to Angel of Retribution). With some minor tweaks to the compositions, different lyrics, and a recording that emphasized melody and songcraft over “brutality”, Jugulator could’ve been a contender.
