Because there isn’t a great deal of Zhuhou content, should I write a list of my headcanons and fic prompts on those two? Most are based on the 1978 version of jttw but they can be used for all adaptations.

Pigsy: Big Brother! I'm begging you, use your magic to make some hot soup. I want soup so hot it burns my tongue!
Monkey: I can't make soup
Pigsy: Then what can you do?
Monkey: Strawberry Ice
Pigsy: *angry scream*
Monkey: Anyway, I'm so cold I can't get my energy back
Pigsy: Brother! Why don't you rub it? Maybe it'll perk it up?
Monkey: *thwack*
(I came across this clip randomly and read all the comments in japanese that basically translated to: This joke is so dirty, it went over my head as a kid)
Just when I thought I had come across every slashy/dirty part in Monkey (Magic), I've come across Pigsy offering to 'Rub it to make it feel better' while making very rude hand gestures.
god, I love this show
This (and part 2) is a really good video explaining the differences between the adaptions of Journey to the West, how close they are to the original material and why some work and some ‘are ass’.
(also the 1996 version has ALL of them giving birth, and Pigsy doesn’t want to give up his baby?! I need to see this show)
I was going to put the Bi flag behind the Monkey and Pigsy header I have on my blog, but then I remembered in the books Monkey is heavily implied to be asexual.
But in the 1978 version, he falls in love with a woman at least twice, flirts with women and then does the whatever the hell it is with Pigsy, so … I’m not sure.

Translation is not perfect, I had to do it twice, but I think I got the gist of it
Tripitaka: Goku, Pigsy still isn't here
Monkey: Pigsy? Oh, Pigsy, right, right Pigsy. Sandy, you go get him
Sandy: 'You go and get him?' I gave him the file properly, so what is he doing? Honestly, he should know what to do by now.
Monkey: Stop grumbling and go already
Tripitaka: Monkey!
Monkey: Ah, me again? That bastard.
Pigsy: Hey, Monkey! 'I'm Pigsy, the useless one who's no good for anything, ain't i? You idiot! You blockhead! You useless freeloader!'
Monkey: Is that all you've got to say?
Pigsy: Wait, wait. Sorry.
Monkey: I was too late, wasn't i?
Pigsy: No, no, you weren't too late. I thought you came at just about the right time
Pigsy: I'm a useless freeloader, aren't i?
Monkey; No, I'm just killing time. Sorry for saying something so harsh
Pigsy: Fine
Monkey: From now on, you'd better change your attitude toward me
Pigsy: Yes. Monkey, Pigsy belongs to Monkey from now on too. Do what ever you like with him
Monkey: For once you said something sensible!
Pigsy: You're cutting my flesh! My flesh!
Monkey: Ah, sorry, sorry
i keep seeing your posts about Monkey/Pigsy come up on my dash and I'm nosy. What is their deal?
Righty-o! Cheers for the ask.
So basically the show is based on a 400 year old plus Chinese novel. In it, Monkey and Pigsy are pilgrims getting holy scriptures, Pigsy often gets them all into trouble, Monkey saves them, they spend the whole time bickering, rinse and repeat (basically. There’s are some diversions).
The show is a JAPANESE version of the books and apparently inspired the making of Dragon Ball Z. The characters are the same, they are friends but bicker, tease and call each other names constantly and Monkey is always pulling pranks on Pigsy purely for the lols.
But this is where it gets interesting. The fact that these two kiss and flirt so much makes no sense to the plot and often just comes out of nowhere. It happens so often, that when BBC picked up the show to do a English language dub on it, they cut out quite a few scenes as I gather they felt it wasn’t appropriate for children (it was the 80’s).
I believe all the kissing and flirting was the actors’ choice, as apparently most of the show was ad-libbed. And Masaaki Sakai (Monkey) and the late Toshiyuki Nishida (Pigsy) had amazing chemistry.
