The next morning, Steve woke up, not expecting to hear the distant buzz of traffic. He looked around and saw that he was outside. A content sigh made him smile as he remembered why he had stayed on the couch in the first place. Evie was still fast asleep, wrapped around him like a cocoon. He settled in again, not wanting to move. A couple hours passed, and Steve had drifted off. He was dreaming about his first time with Evie, which wasn't a smart thing to do.
“Fuck,” he groaned. Evie had moved in her sleep, and her leg was now laying over top of his erection, which was a combination of arousal and morning. He tried to shift away, but she followed him, so he then tried to move her leg. She resisted his attempts, purposely adding weight to her leg to keep it in place. “Shit!” he whisper-yelled as she dug her knee into him even more.
You know that saying ‘stuck between a rock and a hard place’? Well, Steve was definitely there, and he didn't like it one bit.
“Hey, you gotta move your leg,” he said, shaking her shoulder slightly. She burrowed her face into his chest, sighing.
“Five more minutes,” she grumbled sleepily. He huffed at her in annoyance.
“Evie, baby, in five minutes I won't have a working dick. Just move your leg and you can lay here as long as you want,” he argued tersely. Evie's brow furrowed before she opened her eyes and looked up at him.
“What do you mean ‘a working dick’?” she asked, incredibly confused. He glared pointedly at where her knee was crushing his junk. She followed his line of sight and when she saw what he meant, she pulled her leg back. Steve's whole body relaxed as he sighed in relief. “Oh god, Steve I'm so sorry!” He patted her back as he massaged himself.
“It's alright, babe. You were asleep and didn't know what you were doing,” he replied before sucking in a breath. That was twice now he had called Evie ‘babe’ or ‘baby’ within the last 10 minutes. He hoped she didn't notice.
“I still feel bad.” She did look very sorry before smirking at him. “If I didn't have a boyfriend, I'd offer to kiss it to make it feel better.” Steve could tell she was being a shit, much like he’s done to her over the years, so he decided to go along with it.
“You do still owe me a blowjob. If you were to follow through on your offer, I wouldn't tell if you wouldn't,” he answered with a wink. Evie shot him a very surprised look, and he swore he could see the wheels in her head turning as she debated.
“Alright. He doesn’t like getting head anyway,” she said with a shrug as she grabbed Steve’s belt.
“Evie, no. I didn’t think you were serious,” he stammered, grabbing her hands to stop her from going further. She gave him a look that clearly said ‘are you really gonna turn down a blowjob?’ before he huffed out a breath and released her. “Fine, go for it.” She broke into a grin, looking entirely too happy over the prospect of giving a blowjob. She resumed working on his belt, keeping eye contact with him the whole time. Steve, seeing the opportunity to pick up where they left off the night before, reclaimed her lips, tangling his hands into her hair. He slid his tongue against her lips in a silent bid for entry and she obliged, letting him take over her mouth. Her hands began to falter before she reached down to cup him through his jeans, and the moment she did, he went into a frenzy, grabbing her leg and pulling it over his hip. His hand splayed out against her lower back, holding her to his body while her hands went back to undoing his pants.
“-they’re probably still asleep, Alice,” Bucky was saying as he opened the balcony door. He stopped short at the sight of Steve and Evie making out on the couch. Steve, hearing his best friend’s voice, yanked his tongue from Evie’s mouth and stared wide-eyed at Bucky and Alice. Evie, with her hands ready to pull Steve’s pants down, also froze and stared at the intruders. Alice was looking around in shock before Bucky spun her around and marched her back inside.
“What the hell was that?! Were they doing what I think they were doing?!” Alice shrieked as Bucky steered them back to their room.
“Shhh! But yes, judging by the massive erection Steve had, they were about to get busy in some way, shape or form,” he hissed. He didn’t want anyone else to wake up and bother Steve and Evie, so he was keen on keeping quiet.
But he needn’t worry, as the mood was beyond ruined.
Steve and Evie were still frozen in place on the couch, his neglected erection still standing between them.
“I think I should go,” she said quietly. She sat up and climbed over Steve's legs, grabbed her phone and hurried inside. Steve laid there for a while longer, letting himself calm down before he too got up and went inside.
By this time, Sam and Nat were awake, and they watched the super soldier stomp down the hall, who didn't even say a word to Bucky and Alice as he passed them.
“What's his problem?” Sam asked around a mouthful of food.
“Alice and I interrupted him and Evie, in what was probably going to be some of the hottest sex either of them have ever had,” Bucky answered with a heavy sigh. Sam and Nat looked at them in shock.
“When the f-, how the fuck do you know that?” Sam all but yelled. Alice rolled her eyes at him.
“Because he has his tongue shoved down her throat and she was undoing his trousers, that's how.” Nat chuckled at them.
“So, you two were essentially cockblockers, and now they have tons of unresolved sexual tension, on top of the last few years of extreme pining?” the redhead summed up, to which Bucky and Alice nodded. “Nice. Just give them some space to calm down before you try to apologize.” They both sighed in defeat before getting their own breakfast. Evie came out just then, stopping in her tracks when she saw them all.
“Hey, Evie. I got some of those amazing donuts for breakfast, and I made sure to grab a creme-filled one just for you,” Sam piped up, holding the box out to her. She walked forward timidly, looking worriedly at Alice and Bucky, afraid they would bring up what they saw on the balcony.
“Thanks, Sam. I've got tons of work to catch up on since I've been in D.C. the past few days, so I gotta run,” she rambled before grabbing her donut and booking it to the elevator.
“Yeah, best give both of them some space, and no teasing, Winters,” Nat warned. They went back to eating, stopping again when Steve walked out. “Donut?” she offered. “Oh, if you happened to be looking for a certain dark-haired doctor, she already left.” Steve nodded in response.
“Did she happen to get her some?” he asked, making Sam snort, which was hidden in a cough. Nat, the queen of poker faces, nodded back.
“Yeah, the creme-filled long john. Why, were you hoping to give it to her?” Sam, Bucky and Alice all bit their tongues at the cleverly hidden innuendo, trying not to laugh. Comprehension dawned on Steve's face before he made a face.
“Yeah, I was hoping to give it to her earlier, but we were interrupted.” He cut his eyes in Bucky and Alice's direction before he grabbed three donuts and walked back to his room.
“Yeah, definitely pissed,” Sam noted.
***********
A week passed by before Alice could corner Evie properly. She waited until the doctor was busy in her office before she knocked once and entered.
“Alright, I know you and Steve are hating me and Bucky, but I just need to just say something, okay?” she said quickly before Evie could object, shutting the door behind her.
“Fine, what is it?” Evie replied with a sigh. Alice squared her shoulders and took a deep breath.
“I wanted to say thank you, for what you did at the hearing for Bucky. He's all I have, and if you hadn't cleared his name, he'd be locked up right now, and-” Alice had to stop as she was getting choked up over the thought of not having Bucky to wake up to. “If I didn't have him, I don't think I'd be able to keep on living, so really, you saved me too.” Evie was floored. This was the most emotion she had ever seen Alice display.
“Oh. Well, you're welcome. Truly, it wasn't any trouble at all. The Team isn't a danger to anyone, and now everyone knows it. I don't think anyone will-” Evie was cut off as Alice pulled her into a hug, a first of what would be many for them.
“Really, Evie, you saved him. You saved us both, and I owe you so much for that,” the Slayer murmured. Evie hugged her back, trying to keep her contact minimal, as to not upset Alice.
“You don’t owe me anything, Alice. Everyone on the Team is important to me, so I wasn’t going to let them go without a fight.” The two women stayed connected a bit longer before breaking apart. “Listen, about what you and Bucky saw the other day-” Evie began to say before she was interrupted.
“It’s alright. You don’t have to explain anything to me, I know what I saw. As I just said, I owe you, so you’ve earned yourself….another week of no teasing before I start again. So, best check with Steve to make sure your stories match, otherwise I’ll call you out on that too. See ya later, Evie!” And with that, Alice swept from the room just as quickly as she entered it.
“That woman is starting to grow on me,” Evie said with a grin.
************
Evie was hurrying to the elevator, checking her phone for the latest update on a patient when she, quite literally, ran into Steve.
“Oh god!” she cried as she collided with his solid chest. Both of their phones fell to the floor, as Steve had been looking at his as well.
“Evie, you okay?” he asked, holding her steady.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Just in a hurry to go check on a patient,” she explained. She bent over and picked up both phones, giving Steve a chance to check out her ass before she straightened back up, handing him his phone. “I’d love to stay and chat, but I really need to go. Bye.” She scurried around him, heading for the elevator.
“Nice talking to you too, Evie,” he muttered with a sigh. He walked over and joined Alice and Bucky, who were trying to figure out what to eat for lunch. “I hope her patient isn’t going south or anything.”
“Don’t be such a worrywart, Sad Face,” Alice teased. He chuckled before looking too. All three decided that there was nothing that they wanted.
“Let me look up some places nearby and we can go out for lunch,” Steve offered as he picked up his phone, but when he went to unlock it, nothing happened. “Weird. It won’t open.” Bucky reached over and tried it.
“Hmm, maybe it shut off when it hit the floor. Try seeing if it’ll turn back on,” he said. When Steve pushed the button down though, the screen finally lit up, making him freeze in shock.
The picture was of him, Evie and Bruce. There was no reason that he would ever have a picture containing Bruce on his phone other than the caller ID. In other words, this was not his phone.
“Fuck.” His heart started racing as he realized where his phone actually was. “Fuck, this is bad.” Bucky and Alice stared at him, wondering why he looked so upset.
“What? What’s wrong?” Alice asked. Bucky grabbed the phone and when he also got it to light up and he saw the picture, he broke into a grin.
“This isn't his, doll. I’d bet my right arm that his phone is currently on its way downstairs in the hands of Doctor Collins.” Alice also began to smile, as this was truly hysterical, once you took a look at the big picture.
“Well, can you unlock it? Try to figure out her passcode?” she asked hopefully. He looked down at it and pressed the button again, making the number pad pop up.
“Steve, what’s Bruce’s birthdate?” he asked. Steve looked at him and gulped.
“12-12.” Bucky punched it in but nothing happened. “Try mine, since I’m in that picture too.” Still nothing. “Try April sixth.” Bucky looked at his best friend with an raised eyebrow. “It’s hers.” Bucky chuckled as he typed it in, but it still didn’t work.
“Well, that’s convenient. So now what?” Steve was thinking when Team America’s ‘America Fuck Yeah!’ began to play from Evie’s phone. They all crowded around to see a picture of Steve pop up with the words ‘Put me on speaker’.
“Uh oh. She unlocked my phone. She saw the….fuck how am I gonna explain that to her?” the blonde lamented. Evie’s phone went off again, this time showing that ‘Steve’ was calling. Bucky quickly accepted the call and put it on speaker.
“Hello. This is Captain Steve Rogers,” an obviously female voice greeted, trying to talk deeply to imitate a man’s voice. Alice snorted, as it was obvious as to who it was. “I like to wear skin tight suits that make everyone uncomfortable. I don’t play by the rules unless I make them. I love Bucky Barnes ‘til the end of the line’. I’m a Brooklyn bitch through and through.” At this point, Evie started to giggle, which made Alice laugh even more. Bucky was trying his best to not laugh out loud, while Steve was slowly getting more and more irritated. Evie cleared her throat and went on. “Who needs a parachute? Not Captain Fucking America! Oh no, language! My super hearing is detecting fonduing! Think of the children!” Evie burst out laughing, and it sounded like the phone fell from her hand.
“Clearly that is the real Steve Rogers on the phone, so who are you?” Alice asked, poking Steve in the chest before sinking to the floor, almost pissing herself with how much she was laughing. Bucky was silently cracking up, unable to hold it in any longer. Steve was stony faced, a smirk playing on his lips. He grabbed the phone and held it up to his mouth, making sure she could hear him.
“Why, thank you for that lovely performance, Doctor Collins. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” he thanked her, sounding almost chipper before his voice dropped an octave. “You are in the Med Lab, and you better hide, ‘cause if I find you, you’re gonna get it.” He hung up and stuck the phone in his pocket before turning and heading for the stairs. Bucky and Alice shared a look, as they had never seen this side of Steve before. They ran after him, running down the few flights he had already gone down.
“Whoa, Steve! What’s going on?” Bucky called out, grabbing his best friend and trying to stop him.
“It’s a game, Buck. She hasn’t done this before, but I know how to play this out to make sure she won’t do it again.” Steve went around Bucky, stopping again when Alice stood in his way.
“Why not take the lift?” she asked, hands on her hips. He smirked again before going around her too.
“She’ll be expecting that,” he called over his shoulder. They both shrugged before running to take the elevator to warn her.
Down in the Med Lab, Evie was frantic.
When she had finally realized that she had, in fact, grabbed Steve’s phone by mistake, and subsequently unlocked it, with her birthdate of all things, she opened it and pulled up her phone number and texted herself, which was a weird thing to do. Then, because she wanted to be a little shit, she shut her door and took a few deep breaths before calling herself.
She didn’t mean to upset him, if that’s what she had done. She just wanted to ease the tension between them that had been there since the morning on the balcony.
But now? Now she was scared.
Steve sounded absolutely sinister on the phone, and she was torn between complete terror and undeniable arousal. She, wisely, chose to focus on being scared instead of waiting for him to ravish her. Fucking hormones.
Evie crept out into the hallway. Her office was located at the far end, with the stairs in the middle, and the elevator at the opposite end. She tiptoed down, checking rooms here and there for people, when she remembered that it was Sunday and she always gives her employees weekends off unless they want to work for extra hours. She got past the door to the stairs and was headed to the elevator when it dinged. She stood, a dear in headlights, as it opened. Bucky and Alice got out and she sighed in relief.
“Oh thank god! I thought you were Steve!” she called to them, letting her guard down.
Which was not a good idea.
“Well, we’re not, but he is on his way,” Bucky replied. Evie was confused. If he didn't come down in the elevator, then how was he…..
“You guys are the distraction, huh?” she asked in defeat. The two of them looked at each other in shock.
“No?” Alice questioned.
“Oh, that bastard,” Evie swore before taking off down one of the hallways. As if on cue, Steve came bursting out of the stairwell door, running down the hallway after her.
“Your office is base Evie!” he yelled, knowing she would hear him. “If you make it there before I get you, you're safe!” Bucky and Alice, having heard, ran after Steve, wanting to see them play like this.
“Who are you rooting for, doll?” Bucky asked. Alice shrugged.
“I kinda want Evie to win, but I also kinda want Steve to win.” He chuckled at her.
“I want Evie to win. Let's help her, yeah?” He seemed too excited about helping to beat Steve.
“No, let's just let them play. It only proves our point more.” They smiled as they kept going down the hall. They saw Steve dart into one room, only to see Evie run out of the adjoining room towards her office. Steve was after her in a second, and she began to scream as she heard him closing in.
“Not fair! You're going too fast! I'm still in heels!” she yelled over her shoulder. He barked out a laugh.
“That's not what you said before!” he responded before he finally caught up with her. He grabbed her around the middle and carried her into an exam room, tossing her on the table and beginning his assault.
If there is one thing that Evie Collins cannot stand, it's being tickled. Steve has been kicked, punched, and slapped all in self-defense as he has tickled her in the past. After her little performance? Oh, any injuries he would sustain would be worth it.
“Take it all back, Evie!” he demanded as he tickled her sides. She laughed for a bit before catching her breath.
“NEVER!” she declared before cackling loudly. Steve clenched his jaw.
“Fine, you asked for this,” he replied as he climbed onto the table with her, straddling her legs so she couldn't wiggle free. Steve spent the next few minutes trying to get Evie to take it all back, resulting in some of the funniest commentary between the two.
“Skin tight suits are a tactical advantage! Say it!”
“NEVER YOU SHOW OFF!”
“Okay, yeah I do love Bucky, but not that way and you know it!”
“Yes you do, that’s why you destroyed SHIELD for him!”
“I have to make some rules because bad people make them first!”
“You’re a bad boy and you love it!”
“And of course I don’t need a parachute! I’m….Captain America!”
“No, you’re Captain Give-Evie-a-heart-attack-everytime-you-leave-the-Tower!” It was here that Steve stopped tickling her.
“Do I really give you a heart attack every time I leave the Tower?” he asked solemnly. Evie looked up at him, confused by his change of pace.
“No, not every time. There are times you come back with food, so it's not always bad,” she explained. He leaned down, his nose touching hers.
“You really care and worry about me that much, Evie?” Steve was honestly curious, and not at all hopeful.
“Of course I do, Steve. You're my best friend, and you mean a lot to me.” He smiled down at her for a moment before smirking.
“Best friend, huh? Would a best friend do this?” he asked her before pressing a kiss to her lips. When they broke apart, Evie looked….pleased.
“A best friend that's had his dick inside me? Yes,” she answered. He nodded.
“Okay, I'll give you that. Oh well, at least I got your mind off it,” he sighed, making her raise an eyebrow at him.
“Got my mind off what?” she inquired. Steve broke into an evil grin before he started tickling her again. “Oh you fucking asshole!”
“Your language is awful!”
“Says the old man!”
“Yeah, I’m old, and that means I can spank you, young lady!”
“You can’t even say the word sex, so how the hell are you gonna spank me?!”
By this time, Bucky and Alice had gotten to the room where Steve and Evie were. They stood in the doorway and watched as the two oblivious lovers wrestled with each other. Alice, feeling nice, decided to help Steve out.
“Well, he is really old, Evie. Give him a break,” she called out over the grunts and squeals from the table. Steve stopped long enough to look up at her and glare.
“Shut up, Alice!” he snarled before doubling over in pain. Evie had managed to get one foot free, but had accidentally kicked him in the nuts. While his guard was down, she pulled the other out and put them both around his neck, locking her ankles behind his head. Using this to her advantage, she threw all her weight to one side and they both tumbled off the table onto the floor.
“Oooh, nice one, Evie!” Alice whooped. Steve was shocked beyond shocked as he realized that he was currently pinned to the floor with his face between Evie’s legs, her ass sitting on his chest. Evie was smirking smugly down at him and Bucky was having to hold himself up against the wall due to how hard he was laughing. “This is great. I am so getting a picture!” She pulled out her phone and snapped a quick picture. Once it was taken, Evie moved back, her knees on either side of Steve's hips while she planted her hands on either side of his head.
“I got you, admit it,” she said, her voice taking on a seductive tone. Steve's breathing began to falter, especially when he realized he could see right down the front of Evie's shirt. She followed his line of sight, first being shocked but then grinning smugly as she pushed her breasts into his face. “There, now you can look and touch, you pervert!” His hands came up and grabbed her arms, pushing her away so he could see and breathe. He then rolled them so he was hovering over her again, his eyes dark.
“Trust me, Evie, the temptation is there,” he snapped, grinning evilly at her. “And no, I learned from the last time. It's safer for me to be between your legs.” He shoved the material of her skirt up around her hips before nudging her legs apart and settling between them.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! If you two are gonna start fucking, then we're gonna leave!” Alice shouted, walking out of the room.
“Doll, Steve would never have sex with anyone watching. He'd flip a table before letting me watch,” Bucky called after her. Steve and Evie had gone back to wrestling, not bothering to mince words.
“You shouldn’t be messing around on other people’s phones!”
“Are you afraid I’m going to read your diary or something?!”
“No! You just shouldn’t be messing around on my phone!”
“Well maybe next time you won’t make my birthdate your passcode you moron!”
“Oh, so I need to make it my own then?”
“No, just make it a number that no one can guess you dodo brain!” Bucky got an evil glint in his eye before cutting in.
“He did, Evie. He just made it the one birthdate that he'll always remember.” Steve and Evie stopped fighting and looked up at the dark haired soldier.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Evie asked, looking between the men. “Steve, what did he mean by that?” Alice rolled her eyes at this.
“Gee, I wonder….” she trailed off. Evie focused on Steve, waiting for him to answer.
“Well…..your birthdate is easy for me to remember….it's…..” Steve started to explain before stopping to take a deep breath. “Evie, you have the same birthdate as my mother.” The doctor's jaw dropped, as she had had no idea she had been born on Sarah Rogers’ birthday.
“So….that's why I was able to guess it so easily, ‘cause it's your mom's birthday, not mine?” she reasoned, going quiet at the end.
“Yeah,” Steve answered. Evie felt her heart break. She had hoped, when she correctly guessed his passcode, that Steve might have had a thing for her. Then she saw his background, and she got even happier.
His background was a picture of them together. She was on his chest, her head tucked under his chin, and he had both arms wrapped around her, holding her to him while they were both fast asleep. It had to be from the night they stayed on the balcony, as that was the last time she had worn Steve's shirt.
This picture had given her so much joy and hope. For a moment frozen in time, she was Steve's and he was her’s. She even had his last name written across her back, and it made her think of all the times she had written ‘Evelyn Jane Rogers’ and ‘Dr. Evie Rogers’ on scrap pieces of paper over the years.
But, she had gotten her hopes up for nothing. Steve had his passcode set as his mom's birthdate, not Evie's.
“Oh, well that's sweet, Steve. Uh, could you let me up?” she said. Steve huffed out a breath before standing, picking her up with him and setting her on her feet.
“There ya go, and thanks. It does make it a lot easier to remember your birthday, though. The two women that mean the world to me have the same birthday.” He smiled, but Evie missed the fact that it was her smile. “Here's your phone back, Evie.” He pulled it from his pocket and handed it to her before looking her over. “Where's mine?” Evie blushed, as she had stuck it somewhere safe, but also embarrassing.
“Well, as you can see I have no pockets, so I had to get creative,” she explained as she reached into her shirt. She swore she saw his jaw clench as he realized exactly where she had stuck it. She pulled it from her bra and wiped it off with her skirt before handing it to him. “Sorry. Wasn't really expecting to end up with your phone today when I picked out my clothes. Otherwise, I would've chosen pants.” Steve slid it into his pocket, looking a cross between embarrassed and excited.
“It's alright, Evie. It's the safest place you could've picked,” he replied. She nodded at him, a smirk crossing her face.
“I am curious though. How did you get that picture as your background, and why haven't you shown it to me yet?” Steve was afraid to tell her, lest she figure out that he had feelings for her.
“I took it and sent it to him. It was too cute and perfect a moment to not get a photo of. It just proves my point that you two belong together and need to tell each other how you feel,” Alice cut in, saving Steve. “And, we need to discuss what was interrupted on the balcony that morning.” Evie and Steve both blushed, not wanting to talk about it at all.
“That was….nothing. I was still kinda tipsy from the night before, and I just didn't think it through beforehand,” Evie stammered. Bucky scoffed at her.
“Okay, yeah that's not it. I'm over 1000% positive that you two were about to defile that couch, so nice try. Alice and I know what we saw. There was quite the tent in his jeans, so he was obviously about to get laid.” Steve went even redder as he remembered how hard he had been when he was kissing Evie that morning.
“It was morning, so of course he was hard. You oughta know, you have that same problem!” she shot back, earning a snort.
“Morning wood isn't normally that big. Trust me, it was all because of you. I only get that hard when I'm with Alice.”
As Evie and Bucky were not at all flustered with discussing hard-ons and the like, Steve and Alice were both dying of complete embarrassment. Out of the four of them, they were the least experienced in the bedroom, especially as Alice had been a virgin until Bucky came along. So whenever the topic delved into a sexual category, Steve and Alice usually became incredibly quiet and red-faced. Bucky and Evie could, and would, spend hours discussing all things sexual, often banding together to tease Alice and Steve.
“Yeah, but that's you. You love Alice in that way, so of course you're gonna get a boner when you're with her. And, okay, maybe Steve was turned on a bit, but that was only because he doesn't have anyone in his bed at night and therefore hasn't been properly fucked in a while,” Evie argued.
“Yeah, the last time I got laid was a few months after the fall of SHIELD,” Steve cut in just then. Evie's eyes grew wide, as that was almost five years ago and she knew exactly who Steve had been with that night.
“Jesus Christ dude! How have you not spontaneously combusted from the lack of sex?!” Bucky exclaimed. Steve shrugged.
“There's only one woman I'd end my dry spell for, but last I checked, she had a boyfriend, so until she's single, I'm stuck waiting in the wings.” Evie was shocked.
“Steve, that's an awfully long time to wait, and that's if she even leaves the guy. Just go find some chick to bang. From a professional perspective, it's not healthy for you.” Steve snorted at her.
“Not healthy? That's funny, coming from the doctor that eats double bacon cheeseburgers, cheese fries and banana-vanilla milkshakes at least twice a week,” he teased. Evie broke into a grin, as he still remembered her go-to favorite meal.
“Says the genetically-engineered super soldier,” she shot back. “Look, I'd offer to help you out if I didn't have a boyfriend myself. Who is this mystery woman? Maybe I can talk some sense into her.” Bucky and Alice both groaned as Evie was unknowingly referring to herself.
“Don't worry about it, Evie. I'm a patient man, so I'll just wait until I can be with her, even if it was only for one night. She's worth it. I'm completely convinced even though I've only been with her once already.” Steve smiled sweetly, knowing that Evie was, indeed, worth waiting for. He'd risk blue balls if it meant he would end up with her in the end.
“Only if you're sure, Steve. If you ever want or need me to talk to her though, just let me know. I'll gladly help you get the girl you want,” Evie answered, even though it killed her to think of Steve being with someone else.
“Thanks, Evie. So, uh, how's your patient?” he asked.
“Fine, thank you. If you three don't mind though, I do have some charts I need to finish up with. I'll talk to you guys later.” With that, she turned and walked out of the room and headed to her office. Bucky waited until he heard her door close before rounding on Steve.
“Just fuckin’ tell her already! I'm sure she'd dump her boyfriend to be with you, ya moron.” Steve just smiled at his best friend.
“If being with her was that easy, then what's the point, Buck? I want to earn her, win her over the proper way. Like I told her, I'm a patient man. I've waited this long to be happy, what's a little longer?” Steve argued. “I'm going to grab lunch. Knowing the workhorse she is, Evie probably hasn't eaten yet either, so in my bid to endear her to me, I'm gonna bring her food. See you two later.” He then left the room, headed for the elevator. Bucky and Alice shared a look.
“His methods might not be working as fast as we want, but at least he's trying,” Alice said at last. “Come on love, let's go get lunch. Maybe we can still catch Steve and we can all have lunch together.” She skipped from the room, with him following after.
“Yeah, I wanna see the look on her face when he brings her food without being asked. Bonus points if it's the meal he just described, ‘cause that sounded great,” Bucky agreed as they ran to catch up to Steve.

So, @suz-123 and I were talking one day and realized that after the Accords and the bombing in Vienna and the fight in Siberia, we never really addressed how everyone on the Team was able to come and go as they pleased without worrying about being fugitives. Luckily, my brain hatched an idea and thus, The Hearing was born. I am not a legal professional, so do not message me going ‘this would happen like this’ and whatnot, cause I don’t care. This is how I felt that the Team was cleared and if you don’t like it, don’t read it. There are 3 parts to this, all of which I will be posting today before going on a hiatus. So, without further ado, here is part one of ‘Evie Saves the Day.’
“FRIDAY, call a Team meeting, immediately,” Evie commanded as she exited the elevator.
“Certainly, Dr. Collins,” the AI replied. “Is everything alright?” Evie stopped and looked up at the ceiling.
“No. Things are about to get very bad for everyone.” She headed to the common room and waited as everyone slowly trickled in.
“Evie, what's wrong?” Steve asked in his Captain voice as he walked in behind Bucky and Alice. “You've never called a meeting before.” She turned to him and sighed.
“Yeah, because shit’s about to hit the fan.” Everyone looked around uneasily.
“Alright Doc, spill. What's got you so spooked?” Tony asked, any and all traces of humor gone from his tone. Evie wrung her hands a bit before taking a deep breath.
“There's a hearing coming up. A hearing regarding whether or not the Avengers are a danger to the people of the world.” You could hear a pin drop, even without enhanced hearing, the room was so quiet.
“That's….” Tony trailed off, not knowing what to say.
“Yeah, and guess who has been subpoenaed to testify on your behalf?” she asked the room. When no one answered, she pointed at herself. “Yours truly.” Everyone exchanged a look at this.
“Why you?” Natasha asked, murmurs of ‘yeah’ echoing through the Team.
“Because I'm the only person who knows you and knows you. I've worked closely with the Avengers for years, and I've lived with you guys for years. I'm the only person who can be unbiased enough to testify.” Evie started to tear up as she thought of what to say next. “My testimony is the only thing that will keep you out of prison.”
“Wait. Why can't they call Pepper or Fury?” Clint interjected angrily. She shook her head at him.
“Pepper is currently in a relationship with Iron Man, so she can't be unbiased. Fury is technically dead. They can't call Jane either, because she was with Thor. Coulson is off limits due to the whole ‘did he or didn't he die’ thing. Hill is in D.C. now, so she can't do anything because it would be a conflict of interest for her. She is, by the way, the person who tipped me off about all this.” The Team all swallowed nervously as they came to realize that their freedom was in Evie's hands.
“So what happens now?” Bucky asked, pulling Alice closer to him.
“This is what Maria told me: in three days I will leave for D.C. The moment I leave the building, you will be on lockdown. All of you except Vision and Miss Winters. They don't consider him a living person and she's a complete mystery, so I don’t have to do shit on them,” Evie started to explain. Alice looked relieved, but Evie could tell she was still worried.
“We literally can't leave? What if we have to?” he argued, his meaning clear.
“You leave the safety of the Tower and your ass is in cuffs and carted off to prison.” They all tensed at her words. “The moment I leave, government agents will surround the building, to prevent you from leaving. And before you say anything, there are….special restraints that have been custom made for each of you.”
“How do you know that?” Bruce asked shakily.
“That's where I've been all morning. Watching the demonstrations and giving my medical advice on them.” She turned to Steve, as she knew he would listen to her and make the others understand. “Steve, these things have been designed to be the most inhumane way to subdue you. All of the subjects died upon testing. My guess is that you will be a drooling mess on the floor, but that's on the hopeful side.” Evie began to tear up again as the thought of seeing any of them incapacitated like that.
“Hey, it's alright,” he cooed as he pulled her in for a hug, letting her cry into his chest. “We've had worse.” Evie pushed back against him angrily.
“That's not the point Steve! I don't want to see any of you like that, and that's why I'm asking, no begging, you all to not fight back.” She wiped her face and looked to all of them. “If I am unsuccessful in clearing you, those government agents will storm the building and haul you off. They will slap those cuffs on you and if you go quietly, it won't hurt a bit. If you resist, if you fight back, they will turn those monstrosities on, and some of you will die.” Evie sniffled before going on. “And I, as your doctor, will have to sign your death certificate. That is not something I want to do, so please, for the love of all that is holy, when they come for you, get down on your knees and put your hands behind your head.” Steve handed her a handkerchief (1940s bastard is smooth) and she dried her face.
“How are you so sure that they'll come for us? Do you doubt yourself that much?” Nat asked skeptically.
“Nat, this isn't something that I can do over if I fuck it up. Your freedom is at stake, and it all rests on me, and how convincing of a liar I can be under oath.” At this, everyone grew shocked. Evie was gonna lie?
“No, you can't do that. Not for us,” Steve said, shaking his head. Evie rolled her eyes at him.
“I have to give testimony on Bucky, whom I've only known for a month. That's not enough evidence to clear him, so how else do I do it?” she snapped at him. Steve stared at her, knowing she was right.
“So after they arrest us, what happens then?” Scott asked. Evie turned to him with a frown, both not wanting to tell them and wanting to warn them.
“You and Clint, the only ones with families, will get a full day to see them, say your goodbyes. The rest of you, will be processed and then sent to your cells, followed by you two.” She paused, knowing this next bit was going to terrify them.
“And then?” Nat asked, entirely too calm.
“You spend the rest of your natural lives in an 8x8 cell, never seeing the light of day again.” Alice and Wanda gasped, whilst everyone else looked sick. “Thor, Wanda, Bruce, Steve and Bucky have special cells that can and will contain them, by any means necessary. You three,” she pointed at Thor, Steve and Bucky. “However long you live doesn't matter. You will never see anything but your cell walls until you finally die.” The Asgardian actually looked worried for once.
“But, they can't do that,” he argued. Evie huffed out a laugh at him.
“Yes they can, and they will. Solitary confinement. Scott and Clint might get to see their families once a year, if that. But the rest of you won't get visitors, nor will you see each other ever again.” She looked around the room, seeing Vision and Bucky pull Wanda and Alice closer, while Steve looked at Bucky.
“So, that's our future if you fail?” Tony asked her.
“Yes.” They all sighed, knowing this could be the end. “And don't expect any special treatment because of who you are. You three,” Evie said, looking at Rhodey, Steve and Bucky. “It's a dishonorable discharge from the military, ‘cause rank doesn't matter where you're going. Tony? You can't buy your way out. Oh, that's another thing, your accounts have all be frozen.” There were sounds of outrage from everyone. “You're all flight risks, some of you quite literally.” They all grew silent at this as she looked to Thor, Rhodey, Tony and Sam. “Look, I know this is scary, having to put all your faith in me. Trust me, I'm terrified at the thought of failing you when you've never failed me.” Bruce strode over and hugged her tightly.
“Evie, you could never fail us. All you can do is your best.” Though he said it to her, everyone murmured their agreement.
“Another thing,” she said as they broke apart. “If there are any transgressions you've committed, no matter when or where, I must know about them. Otherwise, if the committee springs something on me that I have no clue about, my testimony is null and void. They'll take that as ‘oh, she must not know them very well’ and the hearing will be over and you guys will be gone before I even leave the building. I won't willingly give out secrets, but in this case, I need to know them. It could mean the difference between waking up in the Tower or in a prison cell for the rest of your life.” Tony nodded with her.
“Yeah, I guess it's time to confess our sins. We've got three days people, so get to it.”
************
The next three days went by so fast, it was like Pietro had run them all there. Evie walked out into the common room with her suitcase, sighing at the sight of everyone there to see her off.
“Alright everyone, gather round,” Tony said aloud, bringing everyone in close. “This is it. The last time we could see Evie, although I have absolute and complete faith that she will give the committee a thorough spanking and clear our names.” They all chuckled.
“Faith in me, misplaced may be,” Evie replied with a wink. “It's my word against theirs, albeit mine’s legit and not fabricated in any way.” More chuckles as they knew she was gonna lie through her teeth for them.
“I find your lack of faith disturbing,” he shot back. They were both Star Wars nerds, and he knew she'd try to Yoda her way out of this.
“Alright, alright, let's stop with the Star Trek crap,” Steve interjected. They all looked to him in disbelief.
“First off, its Star Wars. Secondly, I pull this off? You will learn the ways of the Force, my young Padawan,” Evie threatened with a predatory smile. Steve swallowed thickly, entirely too turned on to respond. Bucky slapped him in the chest.
“Dude, you better hope she pulls this off, or you're gonna die with the biggest set of blu-” he began before Steve punched him.
“Shut the fuck up, Bucky.” Evie was puzzled by the whole exchange, but Sam and Alice sniggered behind their hands.
“Alrighty then. The helicopter should be here soon, so I guess I better go,” Evie said to cover the awkward moment. Everyone took turns hugging her extra tight, as this could be the last time they ever saw her. Bruce hugged her for a good five minutes, not wanting to let her go. Steve was last, hugging her just as long as Bruce had, wishing he could find the words to tell her-
“Love you, Evie.” The words left his mouth before he could stop them. She pulled back and smiled.
“Love you too, Steve. Love you all,” she said, turning to the rest. He hung his head as he realized she only meant it in a friendly way. There was a chorus of ‘love you too, Evie,’ before she grabbed her suitcase and headed to the elevator. She pulled out her phone and snapped one last picture of them before the doors shut.
“Well, at least you tried, dude,” Bucky said, clapping Steve on the back. Sam and Alice chuckled at the blonde’s blush. Everyone sat down on the couches, the TV on so they could watch the live stream of the hearing.
A couple hours later, and Evie was brought onto screen and sworn in.
“That should be Dr. Evelyn Rogers, huh Steve?” Sam asked slyly. Steve glared at him but remained silent. “In your wildest dreams, right?” General Ross came on the screen, and everyone went silent.
Ross already had Bruce in his sights, and now Steve due to the fight over the Sokovia Accords, so making Evie testify on their behalf? Well, that wasn't the smartest move he’s made.
After introductions were made, Evie's testimony began. The committee started with Tony, and Evie did not disappoint. As the day went on, she argued over the lesser known members of the Team. Rhodey, Clint, Scott, and Sam were easy, as they weren't as popular. Six hours had gone by, and only five members of the team had been discussed. Three of those hours were spent on Tony alone.
“You know, for such a tiny little thing, she's got a lot of fight in her,” Clint mused out loud.
“Yeah, Ross definitely didn't think it through when he selected her,” Nat agreed before going silent. Her name had just been said aloud, so it was her turn on the chopping block. None of them have ever seen Natasha look so worried, but she need not worry. Evie defended the former Russian spy, and by the end of it, a few committee members looked thoroughly convinced of Nat's good nature.
Natasha Romanoff shed tears over the fact that someone cared about her so much that they spent three hours arguing her case.
“Wow. Evie is amazing,” Scott said as the first day of the hearing came to a close. There was a huge round of agreement before everyone retired to their rooms for the night.
***********
The next day, the hearing started bright and early. Thor was first up on the docket, and Evie spent almost four hours defending him. He grew proud when her argument was over, as she did an amazing job.
Bruce leaned forward and stared intently at the screen as his name had just mentioned by Ross. The Team all watched as Evie began to smirk, and they knew that she wasn't going down
without a fight. What happened over the next five hours was quite literally the best verbal sparring match between two people any of them had ever seen. Evie met Ross’ vivitrol equally and more enthusiastically as the argument went on, culminating in the smoothest line ever.
“Dr. Collins, might I remind you that you are under oath, just like the rest of us,” Ross snapped at her, much like a petulant child who was used to getting his way. She was answering all of his questions perfectly, along with giving more than enough evidence to back her claims and, furthermore, making his look incomplete and farfetched. Her answering smirk was enough to make even the Devil blush.
“Oh, I know that. Do you?” she said. The look of utter befuddlement that came over the General's face was absolutely priceless. There were a few committee members who had to turn and hide their smiles and stifle the laughs that threatened to come out. Those reactions were nothing, however, compared to the Team's.
Evie may not have enhanced hearing, but she swore she could hear their collective gasp followed by Sam's shout of ‘ohhhhhh shit!’.
After a few moments of silence, Ross cleared his throat and ended their session for the day, reminding her that her testimonies for Wanda, Steve and Bucky were for tomorrow. As Evie left the chamber, the live stream picked up the Cheshire Cat grin she had before it cut away.
“She destroyed him. Oh God, I can't wait for tomorrow. She's closest to Steve after Bruce, so this will be interesting to say the least,” Nat said with a wicked grin. Everyone agreed.
“Oh yeah. Tomorrow is also the last day of testimony before they go into deliberations, so Evie will be giving it her all for sure,” Sam agreed.
Everyone drifted off to their rooms, eager to wake up the next morning to see Evie in action yet again.
*********
The Team woke up the next morning, and when they turned the TV on, it was just in time to hear Wanda’s name being mentioned.
“Oh God. Looks like they’re saving Steve and Bucky for last,” Sam noted. The two super soldiers shared a look, not knowing if that was a good or bad thing.
Evie spent three hours defending Wanda, giving more than enough insight into just how well-adjusted the young woman had become since joining the Team after the Ultron incident. Ross repeated the same questions and statements over and over, wording them differently each time, to try and trip her up. Evie, seeing this from a mile away, replied the same each time, and before long, committee members were calling Ross out on it. Begrudgingly, he ended the debate over Wanda.
“Now, for the final discussion, we figured it would be easier to do them together, so Doctor Collins, we need your testimony on Captain Steven Grant Rogers and Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes.” The General leaned forward, staring her down. The camera caught a glimpse of her face, and she was full on smiling.
“I’ve seen that look before. Oh, this is going to be incredible to witness,” Bruce said gleefully.
And incredible it was.
For four hours straight, Evie painstakingly went over every good deed both men had done, completely skipping over their time on ice and Bucky’s time as the Winter Soldier. She knew that would be brought up eventually, but felt it better to see how it was brought up by the committee to see how they viewed him.
“With all due respect, Doctor, but why are you ignoring the fact that Sergeant Barnes was, in fact, a murderer? Do you have a soft spot for him?” General Ross taunted. Evie’s face, which had been blank, suddenly broke into a smile.
“A murderer? Is that what you would be called if you were forced to carry out those deeds?” she snapped back at him. “And no I don’t have a soft spot for him. My heart belongs to someone else, thank you very much.” The man looked at her, disgust plain as day in his face.
“I wouldn’t be called a murderer.” Evie smiled, as he had said exactly what she wanted him to say.
“Then what’s the difference between you and him? Oh, I know. If it was you, it would be considered ‘terrible’ and ‘being forced against your will’, but because it’s not, it’s considered ‘murder’ and ‘doing it willingly’.” Ross’ jaw dropped at her audacity. Most of the committee members looked to him with the same questioning look, wondering how he would disagree with her. After a few moments, his face clouded over with anger.
“You would do well to mind your attitude, Doctor, and treat me with respect.” At this, Evie stood from her chair so quickly it tipped over.
“I’ll treat you with respect when you fucking earn it,” she growled at him. The entire committee, excluding Ross, all looked to her with the utmost shock, some bordering on admiration for her boldness.
At the Tower?
“Holy fuck. That was hot,” Sam quipped. Scott and Tony nodded in agreement.
“Even I have a hard-on for Evie right now,” Wanda said with a giggle. Steve turned and shot her a glare that said ‘back off she’s mine’, which made her laugh even more.
“Not even I have the balls to cuss on Capitol Hill. That woman is a fucking goddess,” Nat sighed, awe dripping from every word.
“Quiet, they’re talking again,” Bruce noted as he pointed at the screen.
“Gentlemen, I do apologize for my outburst. Please, that is not how I conduct myself day to day.” Everyone in the common room burst out laughing as Evie had the filthiest mouth of them out, even worse than Steve.
“Doctor Collins, we understand that everyone loses their cool once in a while, but, this is a legal hearing that is being televised, so we ask that you please watch your language.” Everyone turned to Steve and grinned, remembering the time he scolded Tony for his ‘language’. “We would now like to move to end General Ross’ questioning, especially since he is not the one who called this hearing in the first place.” The look of outrage on the General’s face was worth everything Tony had in his bank account, and more.
“You’ll hear no arguments from me over that,” Evie replied with a sweet smile. The questioning began again, this time, moving in a much more positive light.
“Now, Doctor Collins, when Captain Rogers contacted you and asked for help, why did you lend your assistance?” They all tensed up, as they knew this would end badly.
“What do you mean he ‘asked for help?’ Steve did no such thing.” When all that met her was disbelief, she scoffed. “Does Steve, does Captain America, look like the kind of man that asks for help? No, he doesn’t. He’d much rather punch his way out of a fight alone than to ask for help.” Bucky and Sam burst out laughing, as she hit the nail right on the head.
“Well, you can’t expect us to believe that he had Clint Barton, Scott Lang and Wanda Maximoff sent to him for moral support.” Evie tilted her head in confusion, much like a dog does.
“He didn’t send for them. I sent them myself.” Her admission was met with gasps all around.
“Then you must realize that you violated the Sokovia Accords, and therefore must be reprimanded.” The committee members all agreed with General Ross’ outburst. Evie raised an eyebrow at him.
“General, the Sokovia Accords don’t apply to me. I’m not an Avenger. And I didn’t send them on a mission, that’s Steve’s job. All I can do is tell them that they cannot go on a mission due to an injury,” she explained. The Team all held their breath, as they realized that she was right.
“Well, then how did you know that Captain Rogers needed them?” Ross was back in control, as the Sokovia Accords had been his project.
“I didn’t. The last time I had spoken to Steve was when I had texted him while he was in a meeting with you, General. You had met with the Team about the Accords, but I wasn’t invited as I’m not an Avenger, just their physician. I didn’t even discuss the Team or the Accords at all. I, rather stupidly, felt that texting and telling him that Agent Peggy Carter had died in her sleep was better than calling him.” Evie had said the magic words. Mentioning Peggy Carter in relation to Steve Rogers was akin to talking to Jesus in some people’s eyes. Most of the committee members nodded, understanding clear as day on their faces.
Ross was losing, badly.
“Well, then, why did you send them?” Even the Team, 204 miles away, could tell that Ross was getting desperate.
“If you must know, there’s a monument in what remains of Sokovia that Wanda wanted to visit, since she lost her country and brother in the same day. Clint, who has become close to Wanda over the fact that her twin brother, Pietro, gave his life to save Clint, volunteered to go with her. Scott, wanting to support Wanda during a tough time, also volunteered. I spent my own money and hired a plane for them. I hired a plane because, as I am not Tony Stark nor Pepper Potts, I didn’t feel comfortable using their private jet. And, seeing that it wasn’t a mission and that I’m not Captain Rogers, I had no authority to send them in a quinjet.” Evie looked so proud of herself, and the Team was too. Ross had obviously planned to blame the Accords failing on Steve, but for her to take the blame blew his plan up in his face.
And the committee members knew it.
“Thank you, Doctor Collins, for coming here and giving your testimony over the Avengers. I hereby dismiss you from the chamber as we deliberate. We will have the bailiff collect you once we are done.” Evie nodded before exiting the room.
“Well, this is it. Whatever the outcome is, we can’t blame Evie. She did amazing,” Rhodey said as everyone got up and stretched.
“Hell yeah she did,” Wanda exclaimed in agreement, everyone else joining in.
The next couple of hours seemed to drag on before finally, Evie was brought back into the room.
“We would like to thank you again, Doctor Collins, for coming here over the past few days to give testimony for the Avengers. Now, before I read the verdicts, I must notify you that we went with a majority vote, although some were unanimous.” The Team all squeezed into one couch, not wanting to be apart.
“I understand.” You could hear a pin drop with how quiet the Tower was.
“In the case of Anthony Edward Stark, it is this committee’s majority vote that he is not a danger to society.” Tony began to breathe again as he realized he was a free man.
“In the case of Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes, it is this committee’s unanimous decision that he is not a danger to society.” Rhodey looked at Tony and grinned, glad to know neither of them were going to prison.
“In the case of Clinton Francis Barton, it is this committee’s unanimous decision that he is not a danger to society.” Clint sank to his knees, overjoyed that he would be able to watch his children grow up.
“In the case of Scott Edward Harris Lang, it is this committee’s unanimous decision that he is not a danger to society.” Scott jumped up and began to dance, happy to not be going back to prison.
“In the case of Samuel Thomas Wilson, it is this committee’s unanimous decision that he is not a danger to society.” Sam sat in shock, not believing that he was free.
“In the case of Natasha Alianova Romanoff, it is this committee’s majority vote that she is not a danger to society.” Nat burst into tears over hearing her name be cleared.
“In the case of Thor Odinson, it is this committee’s majority vote that he is not a danger to society.” The God of Thunder stood and began to laugh.
“That’s our girl!” he bellowed, pulling Natasha and Tony into a hug.
“In the case of Doctor Robert Bruce Banner, it is this committee’s majority vote that he is not a danger to society.” Bruce was frozen like Sam, not wanting to move in case it was all a dream.
“In the case of Wanda Maximoff, it is this committee’s majority vote that she is not a danger to society.” Wanda fell to her knees as well, murmuring in Sokovian. Evie’s name was mentioned, and everyone figured she was more than likely worshipping the ground that the doctor walked on.
“In the case of Captain Steven Grant Rogers, it is this committee’s majority vote that he is not a danger to society.” Steve felt Sam clap him on the back, but he couldn’t move he was so surprised.
“In the case of Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes, it is this committee’s majority vote that he is not a danger to society.” Bucky jumped up with Alice and swung her around in joy.
“We’re free! We’re all free!” he yelled before kissing Alice deeply. Steve finally stood and grabbed them both in a hug, not giving a damn that the kiss was progressing in his arms.
“Quiet! They’re speaking again!” Scott yelled, and everyone fell silent.
“Doctor Collins, I know you most likely have a celebration to get to, but I must warn you. Should any of the Avengers commit any acts of terrorism or break any laws from here on out, there will be no second chances. For any of you. Yes, as you have cleared them, your word is their bond. They go away and so do you.” The Team exchanged a worried look.
“I understand sir. They want nothing more than to save the world, so I highly doubt they will do anything to put it in harm’s way.” Evie looked ecstatic over freeing them all, and it didn’t seem to phase her that if they did something wrong, she would go away too.
“Thank you. This hearing is now adjourned.” The gavel sounded and it was all over.
Evie had single-handedly cleared all of the Avengers.
The Team all hugged each other, over the moon that they were free.
“That woman is, without a doubt, fucking royalty and shall be treated as such,” Scott exclaimed to everyone's amusement.
“Oh, absolutely. Now, if you excuse me, I have a family I need to go see.” Clint waved as he headed to the elevator, not stopping for anyone.
“Hey, I'm coming too. I'll drop you on my way to California,” Scott called as he followed him.
“I'm gonna take a page outta their books and go enjoy my freedom. Anyone wanna come with?” Nat asked. The remaining members all looked around, torn between wanting to get outside and waiting for Evie to come back.
“You guys go. I'll stay here and wait for her,” Bruce said. Everyone else nodded before booking it out the door.
Evie finally made it back to the Tower, only to find that no one was there to greet her.
“I guess they're all out celebrating….without me,” she sighed before dragging her suitcase to her room. After unpacking and taking a shower, she changed into some leggings and a SHIELD shirt that used to be Steve's before heading back to the common room and pouring herself some wine. She plunked down on one of the couches and sighed again, sipping, more like gulping, her glass.
“Drinking all by yourself, huh? You know alcoholism is bad, right?” came from behind her. Evie turned and saw Bruce standing in the hallway. She scrambled over the back of the couch and ran to him, hugging him tightly.
“No, I just thought I was all alone,” she answered. They hugged for a while longer before he pulled back.
“I can't believe you did it, Evie. You freed us all. Thank you.” He smiled gratefully at her before laughing. “It was hilarious to watch Ross’ plan blow up in his face.” She joined in his laughter as she remembered how scandalized the General had looked.
“It was no trouble at all. It was worth everything I have to do it.” Bruce put an arm around her shoulders and steered her back toward the couch. “So….where is everyone?” He chuckled.
“Clint and Scott are with their families. I assume everyone else will be back at some point or another and then we'll celebrate.” Evie grinned and went to sit back down when a loud squeal from the elevator caught her attention. She looked up just in time to see Wanda's smile before she was attacked by the young woman. They fell in a heap onto the couch, both grinning like mad.
“Oh my god, Evie! You did it!” Wanda exclaimed, her further words in Sokovian becoming muffled as she buried her face in Evie's neck, breaking down and soaking her shirt. All the doctor could do was pat Wanda on the back until she calmed down. “I'm sorry, it's just such a relief,” the young woman said after a while.
“It's alright Wanda. I'm sure you're not the only one who cried.” They both got up and hugged again. “Hey Viz,” she greeted the android.
“Hello Doctor Collins. Welcome home. Thank you for everything.” Evie felt a bittersweet wave wash over her as she thought about how Viz sounded like JARVIS. She missed the AI terribly, as they had bonded deeply after an incident she had had and no one had been as around to help her.
“It was no problem Vision. I'd gladly do it again.” The elevator opened again and Rhodey walked out, all smiles.
“There she is. The woman of the hour, day, month, forever. Evie, you are by far the most incredible woman I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for everything you did.” He truly looked sincere in his words, and it made Evie tear up.
“Awww, Rhodey, you're so sweet. Thank you,” she replied before hugging him.
“Ohhh, I want in on this chocolacino sandwich!” Sam yelled as he ran up and joined the hug. Evie laughed along with the others before she was tugged to the side. She found herself face to face with Natasha Romanoff, whose face was indiscernible.
“Uh...hi?” was all Evie was able to get out before she was swept into a hug by the former spy. She relaxed, knowing that this was a special moment that needed to be savored.
“Спасибо, Evie,” the redhead murmured in her ear, making the doctor smile.
“You're welcome, Nat. Это было не проблема,” she replied, glad that she insisted on Nat and Wanda teach her some of their native languages so they would feel more at home. They broke apart, only for Tony to suddenly appear and envelope Evie in a hug.
“You have no idea how happy we all are. And don't worry, I have all the highlights recorded for you, especially all of Ross’ reactions,” he told her, loud enough for everyone to hear. She broke into a grin as she was hoping he would've done that for her.
“Yes! Oh, that's awesome. Can't wait to watch it,” she said, clapping excitedly. Everyone chuckled.
“Well, it was awesome to watch. Looks like my faith in you was not misplaced,” he replied with a wink.
“Well, like the old man said, ‘Do or do not, there is no try’. I had no other options, really.” Evie and Tony laughed while everyone else looked puzzled. “Drinks everyone!” Tony offered his arm as they all went to the bar and got drinks, keen to get their party started.
In the elevator, Thor, Bucky, Alice and Steve were heading up. Steve had thought ahead and bought Evie a bouquet of flowers, as a token of his appreciation. Well, an appropriate one.
“Steve, you didn’t need to get her flowers. Just drag her to your bedroom and show her just how much you ‘appreciate’ her,” Alice teased, wagging her eyebrows.
“Shut up, Alice. That’s inappropriate, and off-limits,” he snapped back at her.
“Off-limits? That’s your excuse? Dude, come on. You’ve been hot for Evie for years, and don’t think I can’t hear you late at night. Moanin’ her name and shit. Just tell her how you feel,” Bucky interjected, calling out his best friend. Steve looked scandalized.
“What?! You can hear all that?!” he stammered, blushing a deep red. Thor turned to them, a smile on his handsome face.
“Captain, it’s a wonder no one else has heard it, or perhaps they have, but choose not to say anything as it’s not their place,” the Asgardian stated. “Though, if it makes you feel better, Lady Evelyn having her room on the opposite side and end of the hallway probably helps.” He winked at Steve, making him blush even more.
“Is it really that obvious?” he asked timidly. Alice rolled her eyes.
“Yeah, to those of us with enhanced hearing, you wanker,” she taunted, shoving him slightly. He sighed with relief.
The door opened and all four of them disembarked, stopping at the sight that met them. Everyone was back and huddled around Evie, the person they owed their freedom to.
Hearing the elevator ding, Evie looked up and saw Thor, Bucky and Alice, but once she saw Steve, who happened to be holding a bouquet of flowers, it was like no one else was there. She grinned the biggest since the verdicts had been read, but as she made to go to him, Thor got to her first.
The Asgardian stopped in front of her, and in full view of the Team, cupped her cheeks and kissed her deeply. As he was so tall, she had to tilt her head back so he could kiss her properly. This made her lose her balance, so she grabbed his arms to keep herself steady. A few moments went by before he broke the kiss, leaving Evie dazed.
Steve. Was. Pissed.
How dare Thor touch Evie like that, in FRONT of him! He saw red as he clenched his fists, ruining the flowers and letting them fall to the floor. He no longer cared, his brain switching into caveman mode as he strode forward, eager to get the Asgardian’s hands off his woman.
“Wow….uh thank you, Thor,” Evie murmured, breathless. Thor smiled before lifting her hand to his face and placing a kiss to the back of it.
“No, Lady Evelyn, thank you. You saved us all, and we owe you our deepest gratitude.” She nodded, her mind still reeling from being kissed by the God of Thunder. Steve stood there, glaring at his teammate, looking like smoke ought to be billowing from his ears.
“Sure. Okay,” she agreed. She turned to Steve, who had the most intense look on his face as he waited his turn with her. “Hi,” she squeaked. Steve wasted no time in picking her up and squeezing her tightly. Evie threw her arms around his neck and wrapped her legs around his waist, giddy that he was holding her.
Steve glared daggers at Thor over Evie’s shoulder, making the Asgardian smirk. ‘Two can play that game,’ Steve thought before bringing his lips to hers. Evie froze in shock for a split second before returning the kiss just as enthusiastically, as Steve had just swept his tongue against her lips in a bid for access. Her fingers tangled into his hair as his hands splayed out across her back as they continued, much to the shock of the Team.
“Ahem!” Bruce cleared his throat loudly, looking every inch like a dad watching his daughter make out. Evie and Steve broke apart, both wide-eyed at what they had just been doing.
“You know what makes this even funnier?” Sam whispered to Bucky, who shrugged. “She’s wearing an old shirt of his that has his name across the back.” Both men grinned devilishly, as these two were so oblivious to how the other felt about them.
“Steve, you can put me down now,” Evie said, embarrassed. He nodded before lowering her to the floor, both of them bright red.
“Well, if everyone’s gonna start kissing her, then I call next,” Tony quipped before dipping Evie and kissing her as well. Steve was shell-shocked and unable to move to save her, as she had begun to slap and hit Tony’s chest in a bid to get him to let her go.
“Yuck! I don’t know where those lips have been, Tony Stark!” Evie cried as he straightened up and released her. She wiped her mouth off in an exaggerated manner before marching behind the bar and grabbing a bottle of vodka and taking a deep swig. She then swished it around in her mouth before spitting it out in the sink. “Gross.” Tony had the audacity to look offended.
“Oh, but you trust theirs though?” he shot back, gesturing at Thor and Steve.
“I trust their mouths a hell of a lot more than I’d ever trust yours. I trust Steve’s over anybody’s but still, way before yours.” Steve smiled smugly, causing Bucky, Sam and Alice to shake their heads at him.
“Of course you trust Capsicle’s. That kiss is probably the most action he’s had since he thawed out,” Tony mocked. Evie and Steve shared a quick look, as they both knew that wasn’t true at all.
“Alright, can we stop talking about Evie kissing men, please?” Bruce asked with a shudder. They all laughed as Wanda dragged Evie to the stereo to pick out some music to listen to.
“Hey Thor, I didn't know you liked Evie too,” Bucky said quietly. The Asgardian shook his head.
“Although Lady Evelyn would make a phenomenal lover, the Captain has already staked his claim and I do not wish to create bad blood between us,” he said solemnly. Bucky was taken aback by this.
“Well, then why did you kiss her like that?” The answering grin Thor gave him was enough to make him burst out laughing. “Oh, that's great. Is everyone trying to get these two together?” Thor just continue to smile, causing the super soldier to laugh again.
“What's so funny, love?” Alice asked as she rejoined Bucky, handing him a beer. He pointed at Evie and Steve.
“The only reason Thor kissed Evie was to force Steve to take action. It seems just about everyone is trying to get them together, except themselves.” They both laughed as that was entirely too true.
Music started playing and everyone was having a good time. It was a night to celebrate for sure, and Tony kept it small, which was surprising. Drinks were flowing for everyone, which was not surprising. Evie was standing at the bar, pouring herself another glass of wine when Bucky walked up next to her.
“Dance with me,” he said as he grabbed her hand and dragged her to where Tony and Nat were currently dancing.
“What? No, that's what you have Alice for,” she protested, trying to pull free from his grasp. He pulled her into his arms and began to sway with her.
“She won't dance, and Steve's too chicken to ask you, so suck it up, darlin’,” he retorted. She glared before shrugging and moving in time with him. They danced along to the song, Ben E. King's ‘Stand By Me’, Bucky twirling her around and showing off a side of him that she hadn't seen before.
“Wow. Didn't expect you to be such a good dancer,” Evie complimented. He shrugged.
“Well, I was the one who always had a date, so I've had plenty of practice.” They both laughed before be cleared his throat. “Thank you, Evie, for what you did at the hearing. I owe you so much, and I don't think I'll ever be able to repay you for clearing my name.” She smiled sweetly at him.
“It was no problem, Barnes,” she replied.
“I also want to thank you for keeping Steve alive all these years. He and Alice are all I've got, so again, I owe you. I know the knucklehead didn't make it easy.” She laughed out loud at that, as he hadn't.
“It was my pleasure.” He raised an eyebrow at her.
“Oh, I bet it was,” he teased. They shared another laugh as they kept dancing.
Steve was watching his best friend and the woman of his dreams dance together, smiling as they laughed at a joke he didn't catch.
“It's nice, being able to watch the two people you love most, joke and hang out together, huh?” Alice asked as she stood next to him. He sighed, nodding his head.
“Yeah it is. Wish that was me and her,” he lamented, causing her to snort.
“Well, if you weren't such a pussy, it could be.” He shot her a glare, which only succeeded in making her giggle. “Just think, Sad Face, some day? That could easily be your Best Man dancing with your wife at your reception.” Steve smiled, his heart pounding as he thought about Evie being his.
“If only, Alice, if only.” He went over to the bar and grabbed a beer, even though it did nothing to him thanks to the serum.
After a few hours, Evie flopped down on one of the couches outside on the balcony, needing to rest and get some fresh air. Steve, having watched her for most of the evening for an opportunity to get her alone, followed and sat down next to her.
“Hey Evie?” he asked quietly.
“Yeah Steve?” she answered, a bit breathless. She was glad they were outside, as the cooler air felt good against her heated skin.
“I wanted to apologize for the kiss earlier. It was way outta line and I hope you're not upset with me.” He wasn't really sorry, but he knew he had overstepped a boundary and he needed her to know he did feel bad for his caveman moment.
“Steve, I could never be mad at you for kissing me. I mean,” she stopped, looking around to see if anyone was paying attention to them outside before going on, “We've had sex, so it's not like we haven't kissed before.” He smiled, remembering that night and how she felt in his arms.
“I know, but we both wanted it that night. Earlier? I didn't really ask you if it was alright.” She smiled brightly at him before patting his cheek.
“Thor didn't either, but do you see me complaining?” When all he did was smile, she leaned in closer. “Unless I specifically say no, you can do whatever with me, okay?” Steve's heart took off like a rocket as he realized what she was saying. “I trust you to not take advantage of me, Steve. Always have, always will.” The temptation to carry her back to his room and ravish her was overwhelming, but seeing as they weren't together, he thought against it.
“And I'll never do anything to destroy that trust, Evie,” he replied with conviction. “Besides Bucky, you're the most important person in the world to me. We've shared secrets and experiences that I've not had with anyone else. I'm….so glad to have you as my friend.” He was going to say he was in love with her, but chickened out at the last second. Evie smiled at him before pressing a kiss to his cheek.
“I'm glad to have you as a friend too, Steve.” Evie meant that with all her heart, and more. Before Steve could say anything else, Bucky flopped down next to Evie with Alice on his other side.
“So, I have to ask, but how did you end up with one of Steve's shirts?” he asked, he and Alice wearing identical smirks. Evie chuckled, as the story was rather innocent and not nearly as juicy as they hoped it was.
“He had been the last one to do laundry before I did this one day,” Evie began to explain. “This shirt got left in the washer without my knowing, so it ended up mixed in with my clothes. I went to fold everything and when I picked it up, I didn't recognize it and thought to myself ‘my last name's not Rogers'-”
“Yet.” Although Alice had lowered her voice, Evie still heard her. She shot the Slayer incredibly epic side eye, which only earned her an equally impressive glare back.
“Doll, they haven’t even had a date yet, no need to be planning their damn wedding!” Bucky interjected, glad he was between the two women to keep them apart.
“True. They haven't even slept together....yet,” she replied. Evie quickly looked at Steve, winking as they both felt that no one really didn't need to know that they, in fact, had.
“Anywho, I never got a chance to give it back to Steve because he left for Lagos the same day and then his time was otherwise occupied with the Accords, Peggy's funeral, and then the whole issue with you,” she finished, glaring pointedly at Bucky.
“Picture time you guys!” Wanda cried as she skipped outside, cutting off Bucky’s comeback. All four of them groaned as she pulled out her phone and motioned for them to stand up. “Oh hush! This is a night that needs to be remembered, as it could have easily ended way differently.” Evie stayed seated as the other three stood, not wanting her picture taken. “Uh, Evie, I meant you too. Tonight is all about you, so suck it up.” Steve turned and offered her his hand, which she gladly accepted. The four of them stood together and posed for a few pictures. After she was satisfied, Wanda looked back at the ones she had taken and noticed something interesting. “Hey, Evie? You ever notice that you and Bucky have the same shape and color eyes?” The two aforementioned adults looked at each other in shock.
“Oh, yeah, definitely, ‘cause, you know, I take my eyeballs out every day just to compare them to his,” Evie joked, rolling her eyes. She grabbed Wanda’s phone and looked at the picture, zooming in on herself and Bucky. “Uh, no. I don’t really see it. I mean, yeah, we both have blue eyes, but so do me and Steve.” Evie zoomed back out and looked at the entire picture and that’s when she noticed something.
Steve had put his arm around her, his hand resting on her hip while the pictures were taken. She wasn’t sure if he realized it himself, but she didn’t care. What she did care about was if he noticed that she had wrapped one arm around him while her other hand had set over his while he held her hip.
“Let me see,” Steve said as he stood behind Evie and looked over her shoulder at the picture. He was glad she couldn’t see his face, as he realized that he had put his arm around her and pulled her way too close.
Something Bucky and Alice took note of.
“You stand that close to all your ‘friends’, Steve?” the former Slayer asked, a matching grin on her and Bucky’s faces. Wanda had taken her phone back and left quietly, not wanting to witness any arguments.
“What?! Well, I mean, obviously. I’m doing it with Evie and she’s my friend,” Steve stammered, hoping Evie wouldn't look too closely at the picture.
“You don’t do it with me and I’m your friend.” Alice’s smirk grew as she knew she had him cornered.
And Steve knew it too.
“Well, that’s different,” he choked out.
“By definition it’s not,” she shot back, her smirk on full blast.
“Shut up, Alice,” he snapped after a short pause.
“Well, he kinda can’t since me and Bucky are between you two,” Evie cut in, saving Steve. Bucky snorted at this.
“Yeah….cause that’s the reason.” Evie glared at him, her small size making it not as effective as when Steve does.
“Well yeah. If you and I weren’t in the way, he’d be able to get closer to Alice.” Alice scoffed at Evie, earning the doctor’s attention and fury.
“I don’t mean right now, silly! In general he would never stand that close to me! In fact, I’ve never seen him like that with Nat, or Wanda, or Maria or-” she started to tick off all the women they interacted with before Steve cut her off.
“Evie smells better than you.” Steve was clenching his jaw, a sure sign of his frustration with the topic at hand. Evie looked up at him, smiling as she mentally high-fived herself for shelling out the money for the expensive as hell perfume she wears. Alice and Bucky, seeing the smug look on her face, grinned wickedly at Steve. Evie saw this, so to stop any more questioning, she grinned back.
“So….you’re saying that Alice stinks then?” she teased. Steve looked down at her in shock.
“N-no! I mean that, well, uh-” he stammered.
“He just prefers how you smell compared to everyone else. Funny that, huh?” Alice and Evie were facing each other now, Bucky and Steve to the side. The men both looked at each other in alarm. The girls never got this heated in a discussion, so they were a bit worried.
“That’s a bad thing? I much prefer his cologne to Sam’s and Tony’s.” Both women had their arms crossed over their chests, neither one backing down.
“No, not bad. Just very convenient.” Alice’s tone was starting to grate on Evie’s last nerve.
“Convenient how?” Bucky decided it was time to defuse the tension.
“Like, I prefer how Alice smells, too,” he cut in.
“Yeah, and I prefer Bucky.” The two of them shared a quick kiss before Bucky turned back to Evie.
“See what we’re getting at here?” The glare that Evie now levelled at him finally got through, and now he understood why Sam hated to get her mad.
“Well of course you prefer each other. It’d be silly if you preferred someone else,” she snapped, all joking gone from her tone.
“Why are you being so thickheaded?! That’s not what we meant and you know it!” Alice growled at her. Evie tilted her head slightly as she too glared at the Slayer.
“Then what did you mean?” The calm tone of her question made the hair on the back of Steve’s neck stand. He had seen her temper in action, and he was fearful for Bucky and Alice.
“That you two are into each other and need to be close to each other for fuck’s sake. It’s not rocket science, genius,” Alice snapped at Evie, the latter smiling in return.
“Aww you think I’m a genius? Thanks!” she replied, saccharine sweetness dripping from her tone before she became serious. “And….maybe proximity to Steve makes me feel safe. You ever think of that?” Alice snorted in reply.
“You know you’re a genius, stupid,” she snarked back.
“You just said that-” Evie began to retort before Alice went on.
“And yeah, why wouldn’t Steve make you feel safe? He would clearly kill people for you and his face goes all sappy when he looks at you.” Steve looked over at Bucky, who nodded in confirmation. It was Evie’s turn to snort at Alice’s response.
“Yeah, and I can make the same argument about Bucky. You know, the guy that Steve literally destroyed SHIELD for?” Evie glared at Alice, a glare that lesser men and women would piss their pants over. But not Alice. She met Evie’s glare with one just as impressive and terrifying.
“That’s my point, though! That sappy face is reserved for people you love!” Alice roared, and Steve and Bucky were both glad that they were still outside, away from the rest of the Team. Evie rolled her eyes in annoyance.
“Well, seeing as how I just single-handedly saved him from going to prison, it’s more than likely appreciation and admiration.” Steve nodded in agreement, even though he was in love with her.
“Yeah, appreciation for Dat Ass.” Alice’s quip made Bucky laugh, but he quickly stifled it, hiding his grin behind his hand. Evie looked confused for a moment before she recovered.
“That made no sense what so fucking ever, but for lesser minds, I can see how that could be confused with love.” Evie smiled smugly at Alice’s stunned silence.
“Lesser minds? Oh, I’ll show you lesser minds!” Alice snarled as she made to pounce on Evie. Bucky and Steve dove in between the two women, keeping them from laying hands on each other.
“Alright, I think it’s time we change the subject!” Steve huffed as he threw both arms around Evie to restrain her. In retrospect, he probably should have paid more attention to where he was placing his hands.
“OOOOPSSS!!! Look what your ‘friend’ did! I bet he feels terrible,” Alice taunted. In his haste, Steve had grabbed Evie’s breast, which only enraged her further.
“IT WAS AN ACCIDENT! Steve would never deliberately grab me there unless he had prior permission! Even if he was being malicious about it, I know I could just grab his junk and call it even!” the doctor roared from where she was currently being held against Steve’s chest, her feet dangling inches off the floor.
“Steve, I think it’s time we put these two to bed. What do ya say?” Bucky grunted from behind Alice. Steve’s reply was cut off as Alice yelled.
“I WASN’T TRYING TO IMPLY HE WAS A PERVERT!! You two are so annoying!” Both women struggled against their captors, who in turn tried to drag them away from each other.
“Oh that’s rich coming from you!” Evie bellowed. Alice stopped and glared daggers at the other woman.
“WHAT?! You just don’t like the TRUTH!” Steve and Bucky groaned as they continued to try and separate the girls.
“The truth? You’re the one who can’t handle the truth! Steve and I are just friends, now get over it!” At this, Evie stopped struggling against Steve, not hearing him object taking the fight out of her. Sensing her stress, he set her down softly, staying close just in case. Alice stopped too, as she could see that Evie was obviously incredibly upset.
“Okay, I think it’s time we got ready for bed. Come on, doll,” Bucky said after a few silent moments. He and Alice went inside, leaving Steve and Evie alone on the balcony once again.
“Evie, are you alright?” Steve asked quietly, not wanting to upset her more. She turned to him with tears in her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Steve. I’ve just been so stressed out and scared about this whole hearing the past few days and I let it get the better of me. You guys are safe, so I need to relax and calm the fuck down,” she rambled, feeling stupid. Her tears began to fall, and he enveloped her in a hug, letting her cry into his chest.
“That’s it, let it all out. I’ve got you,” he cooed, rubbing her back soothingly. When she finally calmed down, he pulled back to look at her. “Why don’t we just stay out here and chill for a while? I think everyone has had their chance to hang with you tonight, so I’m calling dibs.” She giggled, letting him lead her to the couch. He sat down, propping one leg up against the backrest, letting the other stay on the floor. Evie, feeling flustered at being so close to Steve, left plenty of room between them as she sat down too. “Hey, I'm not gonna bite,” he whined as he scooted closer.
For hours, the two sat and talked, making each other laugh till their stomachs hurt. Evie laid her head against the backrest, her eyelids drooping.
“You getting sleepy?” Steve teased. She smiled weakly before closing her eyes completely. Steve heard her breathing even out, meaning she had literally fallen asleep right in front of him. He brushed some hair from her face, grinning when she unconsciously leaned against his hand. “Guess I better get you to bed.”
Steve went to push off the couch, but it was one of the oversized ones that seemed to swallow you up. The jostling that he did as he tried to get up was enough to dislodge Evie, causing her to fall forward and land on him. Problem was that she landed square on his crotch, the impact knocking the wind from him and making him fall back. “Fuck,” he rasped, lifting her head so he could massage his junk.
Evie, in her unconscious state, could sense that her head was not laying on something soft, so she began to root around, searching for warmth and comfort. She squirmed and scooted until she was level with Steve’s chest, fully laying on him. She curled herself around him, tucking her head under his chin with her ear directly over his heart. Steve had froze, inadvertently letting her essentially trap him on the couch with her.
“Well, looks like I'm sleeping outside tonight,” he murmured to himself, looking down at the beauty who was using him as a snuggle buddy. He fished his phone out and set the ringer off so it wouldn't wake her before getting comfortable, wrapping both arms protectively around her and shutting his eyes.
************
Alice couldn't sleep. She felt bad about tormenting Steve and Evie about their secret feelings for each other. Well, not so much Steve, but more so Evie, especially after she had just saved Bucky and everyone from prison. She sighed and got out of bed and headed to Evie's room to start apologizing. After knocking for several minutes with no answer, she threw open the doctor's door and saw that the room was empty.
“Huh. Maybe Steve knows where she is, since I last saw them on the balcony,” she said to herself before stomping down to the Captain's room. “Hey Sad Face, it's me. Can you tell me where Evie is?” she said through the door. When all she got was silence, she opened his door too, and saw that he wasn't there either. “Odd. Oh, maybe they're still up out on the balcony!” she said before racing off to the common room.
Alice stopped at the sight that met her as she reached the glass door. Steve and Evie were fast asleep, wrapped around each other as if their lives depended on it. Grinning like mad, she ran back to her room and grabbed her phone before dashing back and taking a picture. She then sent it to Steve with the caption ‘just friends my ass!’.

THERE IS SMUT IN IT!!!! 18 AND OVER PLEASE!!!
With just a few days until Christmas, Evie was finally getting her gift for Steve. She had purposely saved him for last, as she knew he would be hardest to shop for. And, to ensure she got the perfect gift, she enlisted Sam, who knew him best. She was gonna ask Bucky for help, but he was too busy devouring Alice to be available.
Evie and Sam were walking down the sidewalk, arguing over what Steve would want.
“I'm tellin’ ya Evie, all you’d need for Steve would be a few strategically placed bows and he'd die happy,” Sam insisted, making Evie blush bright red at what he was implying.
“Oh, shut up Sam. Besides, he's got a girlfriend for that.” She looked down at the ground, avoiding his gaze. “If I did that, it would make things incredibly awkward between us,” she added, causing Sam to snort.
“Oh, hell naw girl. It would only make it awkward because then we'd all have to listen to him screw your brains out constantly.” If possible, Evie blushed even redder.
“Steve would never. He has a girlfriend, remember? I'm just his doctor,” she trailed off lamely.
“Yeah, and I quote ‘the most beautiful doctor he's ever seen’.” At this, Evie snorted.
“Yeah, whatever. He's seen plenty of them in his life, so..” she left it at that, making Sam laugh.
“Damn. Do you ever leave the state of denial? You both have it bad, but are way too chickenshit to do anything about it.” Evie shook her head and sighed.
Apparently, the other night when she admitted to Alice that she was in love with Steve, Sam had been nearby and heard it all. She begged him not to tell, and he agreed, but that opened her up to relentless teasing. Add to that the constant ribbing from Alice and Bucky and she was surprised Steve didn't know.
“Sam, I get that you, Alice and Bucky think that Steve has a thing for me, but he doesn't. Wouldn't you think he'd break up with her if he wanted me?” she asked pointedly. Sam shrugged.
“You would think so, but he doesn't know how you feel. If you let us tell him, you'd have your lips wrapped around his-”
“Samuel Thomas Wilson! Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?!” Evie cut him off, smacking his arm. He laughed.
“No, but I kissed yo mama with it last night,” he joked, wiggling his eyebrows. Evie joined in with his laughter, heading down the sidewalk towards more stores.
They stopped at a crosswalk, waiting to cross. When the signal changed, Sam offered his arm and Evie took it as they went through, reaching the other side and continuing on, looking at the different shops.
As they were coming up on a shop, there was a grotesque looking snowman out front. Evie heard the person inside hiccup but by the time she went to stop Sam, it was too late. The dude inside had jumped, scaring the Avenger and making him scream like a little girl confronted with a spider.
If Evie wasn't too busy trying to breathe from the laughter, she would've felt bad for him. But she didn't.
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!” Evie burst out laughing as Sam tried to act like he hadn't just gotten the scare of his life. “Oh my God, that was great! Are you in need of new underwear, Sam?!” She dissolved into another fit of giggles at the look he gave her as they continued to walk down the sidewalk.
“Har had, very funny,” he snapped as he tried his best to mimic Steve’s Sad Face. “You’re a sick bastard, ya know?” She grinned at him.
“Oh, come on. It wasn’t that bad,” she teased. He shook his head at her.
“You do realize that you owe me one now, don’t you?” Evie’s face went white as she contemplated his words.
“How do you reckon that? I had nothing to do with it!” she argued. He chuckled at her.
“Yeah, you did. You let that asswipe scare me!” Her jaw dropped in shock.
“Sam, I heard him like a split second before he jumped! I had no chance to warn you!” she exclaimed, but her pleas fell upon deaf ears.
“A likely story. I already know how to make it up to me, so no worries.” At this, Evie stopped in fear.
“How so?” she squeaked. Sam turned to her and grinned evilly.
“You have to scare someone for me. And not just anyone, a certain someone. A certain someone who is all big and bad...and carries a red, white and blue shield.” She gasped at who Sam was talking about.
“No. No, Sam, I can’t. I can’t do that to him!” she pleaded.
“You can, and you will. Or I will march my happy ass right back to the Tower, find him, and tell him everything I heard you tell Alice the other night. Hell, I’m sure FRIDAY caught it on video/audio, so I could just show it to him. Your choice.” Evie was torn. There’s no way she could let Sam tell Steve, but she just couldn’t scare Steve like that.
“Sam, he’ll hate me if I do this,” she whined, causing him to smirk.
“Well, would you rather him hate you for a short while over a small prank, or possibly have him hate you indefinitely for wanting to be Mrs. Steve Rogers?” he mused out loud. After a few minutes of thinking, she hung her head and sighed.
“Fine. I’ll do it.” He punched the air in victory as they went on walking, discussing how to lure Steve out here.
***************
“Hey, Steve?” Evie called softly, knocking on his open bedroom door. She looked in and didn’t see him, and was about to walk away when he stepped out of the bathroom, pulling a shirt over his head. Evie internally groaned at the sight of his oh so yummy abs, wishing she could lick along the lines of his Adonis.
“You need something, Evie?” he asked. She huffed out a breath at being caught in a daydream and shook her head to clear it.
“Uh, yeah, actually.” She cleared her throat, taking a deep breath before continuing. “I’ve gotten everyone something for Christmas except for Bucky and Alice. I don’t really know them well enough, so I was wondering if you would be able to go out with me and help me find them a gift?” Steve gave her a look.
“You want me to go out with you?” he clarified, smirking. Evie thought over her words and giggled at how she had phrased her question.
“Not like that,” she lied with a giggle. “Let me rephrase; will you help me find a gift for Bucky and Alice?” Steve smiled at her.
“Oh, well in that case, sure. I was actually gonna go grab something for lunch, wanna make a date of it?” It was his turn to be embarrassed at the choice of words. “Let me rephrase; wanna grab some lunch and do it after?” Evie struggled to keep her laughter at bay as he facepalmed.
“Yes, Steve. I’m actually getting hungry too so lunch and some shopping would be great.” She headed back to her room to grab her coat when she ran into Clint, literally. “Oof!” she went as they collided, the ginormous bowl of spaghetti in his hands spilling all over her.
“Shit!” Clint cried. She stopped in her tracks and looked down at her clothes, covered with red sauce. “Sorry, Evie!” Steve chose to walk out just then to see what the ruckus was about.
“Evie, you okay?” he asked, seeing the distraught look on her face. “Oh god. What happened?” He looked so upset for her.
“It was my fault, Cap. I wasn't paying attention and I ran into her. My spaghetti got all over her,” Clint confessed.
“Yeah, I'm gonna have to go change now, and shower,” Evie said in defeat. Steve frowned.
“Well, it doesn't seem to have gotten anywhere other than here,” he pointed out as he gestured to her lower stomach and hips. “Just change your clothes and take a shower when we get back.” He didn't want to miss out on spending as much time with her as possible, so he wanted to go now.
“Okay. Luckily it hasn't soaked through yet, so that'll work for right now. Give me a second to change and we'll get outta here,” she answered as she walked very carefully to her room.
“Here Barton, I'll help you clean this up while I wait for her,” Steve offered, stooping down to help the other man. Clint started to chuckle.
“You're welcome, by the way,” he said, still laughing. Steve quirked an eyebrow at him in response. “I gave her a reason to get out of her clothes. You just gotta go in her room and you can ‘help’ her take them off.” Steve blushed bright red as Clint winked.
“Shut up, Barton,” he growled, ducking his head to hide his blush.
“Just tell Evie how you feel. The worst she can do is tell you she thinks of you as just a friend.” Steve's heart took off as he wondered about if Evie felt the same. Just then, she came out of her room, wearing clean clothes.
“Okay, I’m ready to go,” she said, looking down at the two men. Steve stood then, taking in a deep whiff of her perfume. He loved it on her and he could honestly get high off of it because it always made him think of her.
“Awesome. Barton, I think you can clean this up by yourself. Be careful next time,” he instructed as he offered Evie his arm, and the two walked away, leaving Clint to clean up the spaghetti.
“Yeah, those two have it so bad for each other,” he muttered under his breath.
***********
“So, what do you think Bucky and Alice would like best? Should I get them each something or just a single gift for them both?” Evie asked as they walked down the sidewalk. Steve thought for a bit before answering.
“Well, coupley gifts are what everyone got them, so a single gift will work.” Steve led them further down the street, and as Evie looked around, she saw the snowman from earlier, and her heart sank.
God, this was going to suck.
“Maybe something they could take up as a hobby together, so they aren't….fonduing all the time,” he said with a shudder. Evie giggled half-heartedly.
“You know, it's not a crime to engage in copious amounts of physical love. It's actually a great stress relief, and as a doctor, I actually recommend it from time to time,’ she replied. He sighed.
“I know, Evie. I guess it's part jealousy on my part as to why I have an issue with it.” She looked up at him in wonder.
“Why? Do you have a thing for Alice or something?” she asked quietly. He sputtered for a while before he could answer.
“God no! She's my best friend's girl!” he exclaimed in shock. “No, it's just that they're so happy and in love, and….I'm not,” he finished lamely.
“Hmm. Well, I would say ‘I told you so’, but I won't and just settle for smug instead,” Evie said with a smirk. He turned and gave her his best ‘oh really?’ look before reaching down and scooping a handful of snow up and throwing it at her. “Oh, you did not just do that!” Steve smirked at her in response.
“Oh, I just did.” There was a split second before she dove at him, trying to knock him over. That didn't go far before he threw her over his shoulder and walked away, reaching up to swat her behind when she started to kick.
“Steven Grant Rogers, you maybe be old enough to be my great-grandfather, but that does not mean you are allowed to spank me!” she wailed. He laughed out loud at that, not realizing that he was walking right to the snowman. He was just next to it when he finally put her down in front of him.
“Well, someone needs to show you who's boss around here,” he teased, wrapping his hands around her lower back and bringing her closer to him.
“Sorry Steve, but you'll never be the boss of me, no matter how old you are,” she countered, smiling at him from under her lashes. He glanced down at her lips for a second before he started to lean in.
That's when everything went wrong.
The snowman decided to jump at that point, but instead of scaring Steve, it made the super soldier go into protector mode, and his priority was keeping Evie safe. He swept her behind him, out of harm's way. Unfortunately, when he did that, she slid on some ice and went down, cracking her head against the ground. Steve was in a defensive stance still, but once he heard her skull connect with the pavement, he turned back to see if she was okay.
“Oh my god, Evie! Are you okay?!” he exclaimed, worry dripping from every word. She looked up at him before bursting out laughing.
“Apart from hitting my head, your reaction was worth it,” she wheezed betweens guffaw. He looked down at her, a frown spreading over his face.
“You….you knew it was gonna do that?” he asked, incredulous. She nodded vigorously.
“Yeah. It got Sam earlier when we were shopping. I didn't get to warn him beforehand, so he said that I did it on purpose and to make up for it, I had to scare you,” she explained, still giggling. He stood abruptly then, looking thunderous.
“How could you do that to me, Evie? I thought we were friends.” She stopped laughing and looked up at him, a frightened look on her face.
“Steve, we are friends. It was just a joke, really,” she answered timidly. She was gonna kill Wilson the next time she saw him.
“No, it's not just a joke, Evie. I thought that thing was gonna attack you. Why would you deliberately do something like that to me?” Steve didn't wait for a response before turning around and walking away, leaving Evie still sat on the ground.
“Steve?” she called after him. He kept walking and knowing that she had made him do it broke her heart. She slowly stood, tears beginning to fall as she watched him walk further away.
From her.
Evie was frozen as tears ran down her face. She could no longer see him, as her eyes were obscured and there were too many people in the way. After her sobs subsided, she started to follow him, but since he was nowhere to be found and had a head start, she figured he was halfway back to the Tower by now. Defeated, she turned and went into the first store she saw, which happened to be a bookstore that young Peter had told them all about.
*************
Steve felt like an asshole.
He has never gotten mad at Evie, in any way, shape or form. Ever. And now, because he couldn't take a fucking joke, he went off and made her cry.
He was a sore loser, and she paid the price.
Steve sighed, glancing around to see where he was. He had walked pretty far in his anger, but even with his enhancements, he didn't want to walk all the way home, so, he had to go find Evie and pray that she hadn't left him there, even though he deserved it.
After a while, he finally found that fucking snowman, so he walked up to it.
“Hey, you remember scaring me and my girl earlier?” he asked the person inside. She wasn’t his girl, and probably never would be after this, so he took the chance to call her ‘his’.
“Yeah, and you threw her to the ground?” the guy replied in a scratchy voice. Steve was ticked in an instant.
“I didn't throw her. She fell, and it's my fault.” Steve just needed to find her, and this guy was making him feel bad again.
“Yeah, well, you're a massive dick for yelling at her like that. She started crying as you walked away.” Steve felt even worse now. He thought he had heard her crying, but hoped he had imagined it. “If that's your girl, I feel sorry for her. She deserves better from her man.” Steve hung his head and sighed.
“She's my best friend, and I'm in love with her,” he replied, making the snowman scoff.
“That's how you treat the woman you love? Nice.” This dude, a complete stranger, was right. He had treated Evie like shit, so he needed to make it up to her.
“Can you tell me where she is so I can apologize to her? I'm an asshole and I need to make things right,” Steve said solemnly. The snowman chuckled.
“She went down that way, might've gone into the bookstore? Not sure, but I know she went the way. Mighta been following you,” the snowman answered. Steve clapped him on the shoulder and set off, trying to find her. He made it down to where the snowman had said and went in the shop, the scent of Evie’s perfume letting him know that he was in the right place. He went through all of the sections, finally finding her in the self-help section. He watched her for a bit, walking up as she reached for a book way up high. He grabbed it and held it out to her, watching the grateful smile on her face vanish when she realized he had been her helper.
“A book on stress relief would be great for those two,” Steve murmured, giving her a small smile. He noticed that her eyes were all red and her face was blotchy, and it felt like a punch to the gut from Bucky’s left arm. He reached out to rub her arm and she flinched away.
“Don’t fucking touch me, Rogers,” she snarled, making his stomach drop to the floor. Evie has never called him by his last name like that. Steve knew he had fucked up.
“Evie, I’m sorry for earlier. I-” he started before she cut him off.
“Suck my dick, asshole.” With that parting shot, she turned on her heel and walked to the registers. He made to follow her, but was stopped by a group of teenagers.
“Hey, you’re Captain America!” one of them cried. As more and more patrons approached him, he could see the smug look on Evie’s face as she walked out the door.
************
Evie felt so good about walking away from Steve and getting the last word. She headed down the street, her Jeep her destination. About a block away, she had pulled her keys out, only to be grabbed and thrown over someone’s shoulder.
“What the fuck!” she yelled, struggling with whoever it was.
“Evie, knock it off! I’m gonna drop you again if you keep it up,” came the stranger’s voice. One she would recognize anywhere.
“Steve? Put me down, you asshole!” she shouted, drawing attention to themselves.
“Don’t mind her folks. Just a couple who got into an argument, and now I’m trying to fix it,” he replied. A few people cheered and clapped, but most kept silent and went on their way. Evie was stunned. Did he just call them a couple? He has a girlfriend, that isn’t her. Well, to be honest, looking at this from an outsider’s view, ‘couple’ was easier to swallow than ‘just friends’. Steve had finally gotten them to the Jeep and reached up to grab the keys, which she held out of his reach. “Hey, either unlock it or I’ll break the window,” he warned.
“Oh, like you haven’t done that before!” she snapped at him, molten heat pooling in their bellies at the reason why he had broke her window.
“Admittedly, this reason would be a lot dumber than the last time, so just unlock it.” She rolled her eyes and hit the button. Once the doors were unlocked, he opened the back door and laid on her on the seat before climbing in and shutting the door behind him.
“Screw you, Steve,” she spat, using her foot to keep him away. He chuckled as he grabbed it and held it to one side before doing the same with the other.
“You know, if you wanted me between your legs again, all you had to do was ask,” he taunted, pressing his hips against hers. Evie was getting too turned on to care about his language, so she tried to slap him to get her point across.
“Fuck off, asshole!” she snapped as she slapped his arms or whatever she could reach. Her hand came up to slap his cheek, but he leaned back just in time.
“Evie, now stop. I'm trying to apologize to you,” Steve grunted as he grabbed her wrists, keeping her from pushing him away.
“Oh, so if you want to apologize, I have to listen, but if I want to apologize, you're allowed to storm off and leave me all alone,” she snapped up at him, fighting back even though she'd never be able to fend him off.
The two wrestled in the back of her Jeep, each working out their frustration. After a while, they stopped, panting. Steve still had ahold of Evie's wrists, pinning them to the seat on either side of her head. His hips were keeping hers down, which meant that there were mere inches between their faces. They stared at each other, slowly calming down as they did. Once they had settled, Evie looked around and realized that she was once again underneath Steve in the backseat, but as she opened her mouth to tell him to let her up, he pressed his lips to hers.
Steve knew he was crossing a line. But he didn't really care. He was alone with Evie, her soft and warm body under him. Her perfume was all around him, making his head swim with thoughts of her. His memory of their first time together, in this very car, came to the forefront of his mind, and suddenly, a thirst sprang forth inside him.
And the only way to quench it was Evie.
He released her wrists, running his hands all over her body, cupping and squeezing every bit of her he could. He ground his hips into her, glad she was wearing leggings so she could feel everything that she did to him.
Evie was incapable of rational thought, a base instinct taking over as she kissed Steve back. She could feel his erection rub against her clit, sending shocks of pleasure through her body. She wound her fingers into his hair, tugging firmly. He growled into her mouth, his actions becoming frenzied as he reacted to her. Suddenly, he pulled back and looked at her, eyes wide, lips swollen from kissing.
Steve searched her face for any signs of hesitation or dislike, and upon finding none, relief flooded his body, quickly replaced by desire. Making sure not to break eye contact, he reached down and began to undo his belt. Before he could undo it completely, Evie grabbed his shirt and brought their lips back together. He stopped messing with his clothes, his hands coming up to tangle into her hair.
Evie knew where this was headed, and although she knew he had a girlfriend, she gave zero fucks that she was helping Steve cheat. She had him all to herself, and she'd be damned if she didn't take advantage. She reached down and resumed undoing his belt, then his button and zipper. Once that was done, she pushed his pants down over his ass before grabbing his length, pumping him a few times as she reveled at how warm he felt in her hand. His hands were gone from her hair, yanking her leggings and panties down before running a finger through her folds. She moaned against his lips, nipping his bottom one and running her tongue over it to take the sting away.
Steve wasted no time in lining his tip up at her entrance and pushing inside her. They both hissed at the feeling of being completely bare to each other again. He slowly sank into her tight heat, knowing above all else that this was where he truly belonged. Once he was in to the hilt, he started to thrust gently, opening her up for him.
Evie was in heaven. Feeling Steve, all of him, stretch her so much, but at the same time, not nearly enough, was a dream come true. She dug her nails into his ass, pulling him in deeper, his cock reaching places inside her that no other man ever could.
Or would.
Steve broke the kiss and pulled back slightly to look down at Evie, his exhales becoming her inhales. He never stopped thrusting, only slowing slightly, and as she ran her hands through his hair with the gentlest touch, something in him snapped. His brain tapped into a dark place and he sped up, thoughts of claiming her ever present in his mind. He pulled the collar of her shirt down, exposing the skin of her chest. He bit down, sucking a dark mark over her heart.
“Fuck, Steve...” she moaned, head thrown back. Once he was satisfied with his work, he added a bit of strength to his thrusts, almost weeping with joy as Evie accepted it, never crying out in pain.
He could never let go like this with any of the women he had been with. Not even Peggy.
Steve slid his hands up Evie's back, hooking them over her shoulders and used that as leverage to speed up and intensify even more, his eyes never leaving hers. Evie's hands cupped his face in the most tender fashion, her thumbs brushing over his lips. Their orgasms were fast approaching, and as hers began to wash over her, she closed her eyes and threw her head back again.
“No, don't hide it. I wanna see and hear everything,” Steve whispered. Evie opened her eyes and stared into his, transfixed. He got to watch as she became undone, her velvet walls clenching down triggering his own release. She was captivated by the look of pure bliss that came over him as he came, spilling his seed deep inside her. As they both came down from their highs, they peppered each other with kisses, hands wandering and caressing what they could reach. Once they had calmed down completely, Evie and Steve stared at each other, and they knew something had changed between them. He withdrew from her, both wincing in their sensitive state before he fixed their clothes. As they got back in the front, they shared another look before taking off.
“Evie….” Steve started before she cut him off.
“Steve, it's alright. This is a safe space. What happens in my Jeep, stays in my Jeep. Promise.” Evie wished above anything that she could shout from the rooftops about what they had just done, but outing Captain America as a cheater seemed like a bad idea, a complete PR nightmare for sure.
“Okay, only if you're sure.” He looked out the window, thinking about what had just happened. He just cheated on his girlfriend, and he was pretty sure he forced himself on Evie, which would explain why she was so quiet. “I'm so sorry, Evie,” he apologized. She looked over at him in surprise.
“For what? Breaking my dry spell?” she retorted. When she saw that he was serious, she grew worried. “Steve, what are you sorry for?” He sighed in irritation.
“You know what. Are you okay?” Evie honestly had no idea what he was talking about.
“Apart from my crotch being wet from your jizz oozing out, I'm great,” she replied. He sighed.
“Cut the crap, Evie. What just happened, you know what that's considered, right?” He didn't want to say the word out loud, but it seemed to settle in the air between them, unspoken.
“Yeah, you technically cheated on your girlfriend. Well, there's no ‘technically’ about it. You did cheat. That makes me the other woman.” Evie couldn't help but laugh at that, but it was true.
“No, I mean what I did to you,” Steve snapped. Evie had just pulled into her parking spot in the Tower garage, so she was able to turn and face him head on.
“What you did to me? Steve, you fucked me.” Evie was so puzzled as to what he thought they did. He sighed, getting out of the car and shutting the door with a little too much force. Evie got out and gave him a look.
“Sorry. Evie, I rrrrr…..” he trailed off, acting like he would be struck down by God if he spoke it out loud. “I...forced myself on you. You should be hating me right now.” Evie was floored. That was the absolute last thing she expected him to say.
“Steve, you didn't.” Evie crossed her arms over her chest in defiance. How could he possibly think that?
“Yes I did, Evie. I didn't ask if it was okay with you, nor did I give you a chance to say ‘no’. I just yanked your clothes out of the way and then went to town.” He looked so upset with himself, but there was no reason to be.
“Are you serious right now? Do you honestly think that if I didn't want to have sex with you, I wouldn't have said something?” she shot back. “Even if I couldn't talk, I would've hit or kicked or punched, hell I would have bit you to get my point across. But did I do any of that? No. I kissed you back. Hell, if I recall, I was the one who undid your pants and had my hand wrapped around your dick. How is that you forcing yourself on me?” Evie was beyond pissed now. He was ruining their moment.
“Evelyn, enough.” Steve's Captain voice was in full effect, and dammit if that didn't turn her on again. “This will not happen again. I can't seem to control myself around you, and that puts you in danger. End of discussion,” he added when she went to argue.
Evie bowed her head and walked passed him to the elevator, waiting for him to get in before hitting the button for the residential floors. They rode up in silence, Evie trying to keep her tears at bay until she was in her room. It broke her heart to hear him say that he would never have sex with her again, which obviously meant that Steve didn't think of her that way, that she was just a friend to him.
Steve felt like shit. He knew he was full on lying when he told her it wouldn't happen again. He would gladly sleep with Evie all day, every day, if she wanted, even if he was in a committed relationship. Which she would never want now, after all he said and done to her.
The elevator opened and Evie shot out, running straight to her room and slamming the door behind her. Steve, feeling like a complete asshole, hung his head and sighed as he walked out.
“Hey Steve, what's wrong? Why did Evie look so upset?” Wanda asked from where she was sitting next to Vision. The whole Team was in the common room, and they all looked to Steve expectantly.
“We had a disagreement, and I was an ass about it,” he replied as he walked over and sat next to Sam. “Can I ask everyone's opinion on something….for a friend?” For Steve to ask the whole Team something was pretty huge, and they all agreed.
“Sure Cap. What's eating your friend?” Tony asked from beside Bruce. Steve swallowed, knowing he had to tweak his question a bit.
“Okay, so….my friend has been in love with a….co worker of his for years. He's never been able to make a move because one of them always had a partner, and then he went….abroad for a while, so he definitely wasn't able to be with her then. Well, now that he's back, he has a girlfriend.” Steve stopped to take a breath when Bucky piped up, grinning.
“Hey Steve, what's this friend's name? Didn't think you had any outside of me and Bird-brain over there,” he asked, smirking at Sam who flipped him off. Steve blushed, knowing he couldn't exactly say his name.
“Uh….Roger,” he said at last. Everyone shared a look.
“Does his surname happen to be ‘Stevens’?” Alice joked. She got her answer when Steve blushed even redder. “Who is this coworker of his? Is she a doctor of some sort?” Alice knew exactly who Steve was talking about, and she wanted to tease him as much as possible.
“That has nothing to do with the issue, Alice,” he snapped. She grinned, but remained silent so he could continue. “As I was saying, Roger has a girlfriend, but he's still in love with his coworker. Well, ea-”
“Wait! What's his coworker's name? This could get confusing,” Alice cut in again. Steve sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“For fuck's sake, Alice. Her name is Ev...a,” he finished lamely. She grinned wider than ever and laughed.
“Eva, huh? I like the name ‘Evie’ better, not that you're talking about our beloved doctor though, right?” she teased, staring him down. The entire Team was looking at him, waiting for his response.
“Okay, I think it's time for me to leave, especially if Evie is being name-dropped,” Bruce said as he stood and left for the lab. Steve coughed, realizing that it was probably a good idea for Bruce to not hear this next part.
“Quit interrupting, Alice,” he snapped. “Like I was saying, earlier Roger and Eva went shopping and after they had a tiny disagreement, they had gotten into the back of her car and-” Steve stopped, as he was unsure how to go on.
“And what, Steve?” Sam asked, looking stony faced. Steve swallowed thickly.
“Uh, well, they uh, kinda, sorta, uh, had sex,” he stammered, blushing bright red. The reactions of the Team ranged from proud (Bucky) to impressed (Tony) to appalled (Sam).
“So, Roger, cheated on his girlfriend with the woman he's actually in love with, Eva? I'd say ‘well done’ and buy him a drink,” Tony said, clapping. Steve bowed his head, hiding his smile.
“Is Eva still standing?” Alice asked slyly. He looked up at her, all traces of humor gone from his face.
“Well, yes, but I, I mean Roger, screwed things up with her.” They all shared a look before he went on. “Roger is certain that he, well, forced himself on her.” The air in the room was gone. Steve felt like the world's biggest asshole, and judging by the look on everyone's face, he was.
“Steve, and cut the shit, alright? What happened?” Nat asked, her tone stern. He sighed before answering.
“I didn't exactly ask if she was okay with me kissing her, and I didn't ask if she was okay with me touching her there, and I definitely didn't ask if she was okay with me….sticking my dick in her,” Steve said, resigned to his fate. Suddenly, he was yanked up from his seat by Alice, who had murder in her eyes.
“So, you just had your way with her? Did she fight back?! WHAT DID YOU DO STEVE?!” she bellowed, raising her hand to deck him.
“No! Evie didn't fight back at all! She let me do it to her!” Steve cried. Alice released him, a puzzled look on her face. Bucky, who had jumped up with Alice, stood in front of him, grabbing his shoulders and looking him in the eye.
“Steve, if she didn't fight back or anything, then what makes you think that you forced yourself on her?” he asked.
“Yeah, we're with Barnes on this, Steve. If Evie didn't explicitly say ‘no’ or try to fight you off, then chances are she was completely okay with everything,” Nat added. Sam stood, placing a hand on Steve's shoulder as well.
“Face it, dude. Evie wanted the D,” he said, shoving the blonde slightly. “I told her to scare your ass, not tap it.” Everyone laughed at that, causing Steve to blush, as he figured the worst was over.
“Yeah, you're probably just feeling guilty about cheating on Amy, and now you have a reason to break up with her so you can have all the sex you want with Evie,” Bucky reasoned. Steve sighed.
“No, I doubt Evie will ever want to talk to me again, let alone have sex with me, after what I said to her earlier,” he lamented. When all that met him was silence, he explained. “I tried to apologize to her, but she kept saying I had nothing to be sorry about, so I snapped and said that I'm a danger to her ‘cause I can't seem to control myself when I'm alone with her.” Bucky snorted.
“Yeah, I don't think that'll be the case, Steve. Evie knew you had a girlfriend, and yet she still jumped on your dick and rode you like a horse. Trust me, she'll be back for more.” He, Alice, Sam and Steve began to walk towards the hallway, the tension from earlier gone. “Ya know, with all the different times you tried to join the Army with a new identity, you would think you'd be able to come up with better code names than ‘Roger’ and ‘Eva’.” The other three laughed at Steve, who went all Sad Faced.
“You guys suck, and for the record, she didn't jump on my dick. How do the kids say it nowadays, I ‘dicked her down good’?” he said with a chuckle before sighing. “I guess I need to go apologize to Evie, properly this time.”
“Oh hell naw. I do not want to see this,” Sam exclaimed, walking off. Steve squared his shoulders and headed down to Evie's door, Bucky and Alice following.
“Uh, I'd like to talk to her alone, if you don't mind,” he called behind him.
“Fine. You get five minutes before we knock. Have fun,” Bucky said, throwing a wink his way. Steve rolled his eyes as he knocked on the door, waiting for Evie to let him in. After a few minutes, it opened, revealing a freshly showered Evie.
“What do you want, Steve?” she asked, her voice wavering on his name. It broke his heart to know he was the reason she was upset.
“May I come in?” he asked after clearing his throat. She stepped back so he could enter, shutting the door behind him. “I'm here to apologize, and to admit I was wrong.” She had sat down on her bed, pulling the stress relief book to her and continuing to wrap it. He sat down across from her, waiting for her to speak.
“What were you wrong about?” She didn't bother to look up at him, as she was concentrating on getting the lines of the design right on the wrapping paper.
“I didn't….force myself on you,” he answered. She looked up then, sensing his hesitation in his wording.
“No, I wanna hear you say it. I want you to tell me what you didn't do.” She leveled him with a look that had him quailing at first before squaring his shoulders.
“Fine,” he huffed before taking a few deep breaths. “I did not rape you. We were both consenting adults that had sex in the back of your car. Happy now?” Evie smiled and nodded.
“Yes, thank you.” She resumed wrapping the book and he sighed.
“Wait, is my gift in here? I don't wanna see it if it is,” he said suddenly, looking around in alarm. Evie giggled.
“No, it's already wrapped. I've got a question for you now. Are you going to tell Amy?” It was a very loaded question, and there was a lot resting on his answer.
“Well, yeah. I did cheat on her, so she deserves to know. I just hope she doesn't cry.” Evie scoffed at him.
“It's a terrible way to do it, but just do it over the phone if it bothers you that much,” she offered with a shrug. He chuckled.
“No, doing it in person is the honorable thing to do.” Evie snorted at him, making him chuckle. “What?” She smiled at him.
“Well, I'm pretty sure the honorable thing to do in this situation is remain faithful to your partner.” Steve glared at her, but she was unphased. “Tell me I'm wrong,” she challenged, smiling even wider when he didn't. “I am curious though, why did we?” Evie knew why she had slept with Steve, but she wanted to know why he kissed her first and kicked the whole thing off.
“Well, honestly, having you under me made me remember our first time and I just couldn't help myself,” he replied sheepishly. She smirked at him.
“So, if I ever wanna have sex with you again, I just need to get you in my backseat and make sure I'm under you?” she teased. He returned her smile, before leaning in slightly.
“You just need to be underneath me, that's all.” Suddenly Evie was on her back as Steve pinned her backward on the bed.
“Whoa. That eager for round two, huh?” she asked. He grinned devilishly down at her.
“Well, why go elsewhere for subpar sex when I can have amazing sex with you?” Evie's panties were soaked, and she suddenly realized that she should have put shorts on before answering the door. Steve must have come to the same conclusion as he began to grind his hips into hers again, her panties doing nothing to dull the friction he was causing. Just as he was about to kiss her again, there was a knock at the door.
“You two better not be fucking again! Steve still has a girlfriend that he needs to dump before you two can you can fuck in peace!” Bucky bellowed through the door.
“Yeah, and I need to be able to tell you ‘I bloody told you so!’ before you're official!” Alice added. Evie used Steve's distraction to push him onto the floor, as that was the only place he could go. He laid there, stunned as she jumped over him and ran to her dresser and pulled on some shorts. He grinned when he saw the wet spot on her panties, knowing he was the reason behind it.
“We are not fucking again!” Evie exclaimed as she yanked her door open. Once her words caught up to her, she rounded on Steve. “Wait, you told them?!” He looked up at her from his place on the floor and knew he was in trouble.
“Well, not exactly. I didn't use our names,” he said as he climbed to his feet.
“What?” she asked, incredulous.
“He made up names to protect your identities,” Bucky explained, making Alice snort.
“Yeah, completely unoriginal. ‘Roger' and 'Eva'.” She shook her head at Steve. “Aren't you supposed to basically be a spy? Those code names were diabolical and you should be ashamed.” He shrugged sheepishly.
“It was the best I could come up with,” he mumbled lamely. Bucky laughed out loud at that.
“Yeah, I'm sure that the best you could 'come' up with,” he replied, winking at Evie, making her giggle.
“God I hope you're better in bed than your imagination is suggesting,” Alice whined, making Steve blush.
“He's not bad,” Evie replied with a shrug. “Much better than any other guy I've been with that's for sure.” Steve beamed with pride at this.
“Oh yeah? What's his signature move?” Alice inquired, wagging her eyebrows.
“Eewww Alice! Boundaries!” Bucky cut in, gagging.
“What?!” she said with a wink.
“Well, it's not so much a signature move, but-” Evie started to say before being cut off by Steve and Bucky's shout of her name. She winked back at Alice, but said nothing more. Bucky shuddered before changing the subject.
“So, does ‘Eva’ think that ‘Roger’ forced himself on her?” he directed at Evie, who didn't disappoint with her reaction.
“Hell no,” she replied with a snort.
“That's good because I would have to kill Roger if he did try that shit,” the Slayer growled, glaring at Steve.
“Trust me, Roger did no such thing. Eva totally wanted it. No doubt about it,” Evie assured them all. Bucky and Alice broke into matching smirks, causing Evie to blush under their gaze.
“Oh, did she now?” Bucky mused out loud.
“Well….yeah. She's been single for a while, so of course she isn't gonna pass up free sex,” she defended. She knew that Bucky and Alice both knew how she felt about Steve, but she wasn't about to admit it in front of him.
“Yay! So, Roger, when are you dumping the blonde tart and making Evie your girlfriend?” she asked matter-of-factly. Steve immediately began to stutter and blush at her question.
“Who said anything about Evie?” he finally got out. Alice's eyebrows rose so high they were in danger of disappearing into her hair.
“Excuse me?” she all but screeched.
“You're excused,” Evie cut in before she could go on. “I'm gonna back Steve up on this. Who said anything about us becoming a couple?”
“Wouldn't you rather back up ON Steve?” Bucky interjected, wagging his eyebrows at her.
“Bucky? Bite me,” she replied, rolling her eyes.
“Beat him to it,” Steve said quietly, knowing full well they could still hear him.
“Seriously?” Evie cried, glaring at him.
“Wowwwww,” Alice drew out the word. “Steve's got a kinky side.” Bucky grinned his biggest grin yet at his best friend.
“Freak.” He looked Evie over, clearly looking for said love bite. “Let's see it then, although now I'm kinda worried that it's in a not so innocent spot,” he said when he couldn't find it.
Evie glared up at Steve, as this was his fault they even knew it existed. Shaking her head, she pulled the collar of her shirt down, exposing the deep purple, almost black, hickey just over her left breast. Bucky and Alice both gasped, before Bucky high-fived Steve.
“Goddamn Steve! Way to go bro!” he exclaimed, so proud of Steve’s work. Alice stared in shock a bit longer before recovering.
“Didn't that hurt?” she asked before smirking like mad at the Doctor. “I mean... sorry. Of course it didn't.” Evie blushed, fixing her shirt to hide the evidence of Steve's love.
“No, actually, it didn't. Wasn't really concerned about it at that point though. I had other things on my mind,” she admitted, blushing a bit more.
“Oh I bet,” Alice replied with a smirk. “But you two aren't going to make this official? You know, get to have all the sex all the time and in a BED?!” Evie sighed at her.
“He has a girlfriend. Kinda hard to make anything official,” she reasoned. Steve stopped and looked at her, realization dawning on his face. Evie paid him no mind, unaware that she had just inadvertently admitted to wanting to make it official.
Steve was in shock. There's no way that Evie wanted there to be anything between them, is there? He looked at Bucky, who, having just seen the myriad of emotions flutter across his best friend's face, nodded in confirmation.
“Yeah, a girlfriend he cheated on,” Bucky cut in then, with a smile. “His momma raised no fool. He’ll break up with her.” He sounded so sure of this, but Evie wasn't convinced.
“She won't let him go, he's a catch. No woman in their right mind would let him get away,” she argued. “And what makes you so sure we'd even get together? We're just colleagues.”
“Yeah, colleagues who have fucked twice now,” Steve said with a confident smile. Before Evie could say anything, Alice cut her off.
“What do you mean ‘colleagues who have fucked twice’?” Evie turned to glare at Steve as he had let loose another secret.
“We hooked up once before. It was after the events of D.C. You know, when you two were busy playing house,” Evie snapped. “It was a one time thing, no big deal.”
Alice Winters, resident ex-Slayer, was beyond ticked.
“That's it? You're just gonna spring that on us like it's nothing, like it's no big deal?” she said slowly, trying to keep her cool.
“Well, it's not. So what if we've had sex a couple times? The only issue is that this time, he cheated,” Evie replied with a shrug. Steve looked mildly concerned for Evie's safety, as he swore Alice had fire in her eyes and smoke billowing from her ears.
“The only issue?! The only issue?!” the Slayer shrieked before lunging for the Doctor, her hands outstretched. Bucky and Steve acted defensively, Bucky grabbing hold of his girlfriend while Steve jumped in front of Evie, becoming her shield. He was a lot more durable than she was, so better that Alice got to him first.
“Whoa, doll! Easy! No need to murder the poor woman!” Bucky groaned as he held her back. Steve stood his ground, not really wanting to physically fight Alice off, but would to protect Evie.
After a few moments of struggling, Alice calmed, sagging against Bucky's chest. “Fine! You two are just so stupid it hurts sometimes! Anyway, come on Bucky, let's go and enjoy the benefits of being in a relationship together. Sexually,” she spat at them. Steve rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, we got that, Alice,” he replied. She smirked at him.
“Lots of sex whenever we want. You're the idiots who are being so damn blind and can't see what's right in front of you.” Evie chuckled at her.
“Yeah, well apparently all I have to do is get him in my Jeep so….” she trailed off. “We’ve christened it quite nicely if I do say so myself,” she said proudly, holding her hand up to Steve. He high-fived her back and grinned.
“Yeah we did. That's the one place I've come the most in, and I wouldn't change it for anything.” Steve felt smug saying that, as it was true. Evie felt smug and she decided right there and then that she would never get rid of her Jeep, because it’s the only place she got to have Steve.
“Imagine what you could do in a big, soft bed though. Whenever you want,” Alice pressed. Evie sighed.
“Secret rendezvous are apparently our thing, so why fix it if it ain’t broke?” she shot back. While the girls were arguing, Bucky and Steve were grinning at each other. Steve was over the moon at the thought of Evie possibly returning his feelings, and Bucky’s grin was getting his hopes up even more.
“Dude, come on,” the metal-armed man groaned.
“Sorry, I have a girlfriend that I need to go confess to. Bye you two, see ya later, Evie,” Steve said as he began to walk away.
“Yeah, and if Amy does break up with you, I’m sure Evie won’t mind sharing her bed one bit,” Bucky called after him, getting Steve to stop and look back.
“Yeah, stop acting like such a Tom Cat and treat Evie better, you wanker,” Alice taunted. Making the blonde go all Sad Face again.
“Hey, he treats me just fine, thank you very much,” Evie jumped to his defense. Bucky grinned at her.
“Yeah, and he treats you even better when you’re riding his dick.” Evie’s jaw dropped at his boldness.
“Well, you’re supposed to treat the person you’re fucking better, unless there’s an agreement to be treated like shit. And for the record, I wasn’t riding his dick….this time,” she answered after a beat. Bucky smirked at her, but Alice cut across him before he could say anything.
“Evie, seriously, you’re okay with this? You don’t want more from Steve?” Evie could hear the sincerity in her voice, but was unable to answer truthfully as all three of them turned to her expectantly. She blushed deeply as Steve looked entirely too hopefully for her liking.
“Uh….well, no. We’re just friends, right Steve?” she squeaked. She insisted to herself that Steve did not look disappointed, just caught off guard.
“Oh, uh yeah. Of course,” he answered. Alice rolled her eyes.
“Oh my GOD.” She literally pulled some of her hair in frustration at Evie and Steve.
“Seriously?” Bucky apparently shared in Alice’s frustration.
“Why mess up our friendship? It’s perfect just the way it is,” she replied, shrugging.
“Yeah, hate to change it in anyway,” Steve agreed, sounding incredibly heartbroken. Evie tried not to think about how upset he sounded so as to not get her hopes up.
“You absolute fucking MORONS,” growled Alice as she stomped away. Bucky shook his head and followed her, muttering something about ‘so much for a super soldier, just a super dumbass’. Evie and Steve looked at each other and smiled.
“I’ll go ahead and let you go. Bruce and I have tons of tests that we’re doing tomorrow, so I gotta get plenty of rest. Night, Steve,” Evie said. He took that as his cue to leave and walked out, stopped in the hallway.
“Night, Evie. If things go the way I expect them to and Amy breaks up with me, maybe we can get dinner some time.” She nodded at him.
“It’s a date.” He walked down the hall, hoping beyond hope that he would be single by the next morning so he could finally take Evie out.
********
It was finally Christmas Eve. Christmas was probably Evie’s favorite holiday. She loved the decorations, music, everyone being together. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year. Tonight, the team was having their annual dinner and she was excited to be able to go for the first time. Every other time either she was sick and couldn’t go, or had other plans that night. This year, Tony said that they all had to find naughty or nice Christmas shirts or sweaters to wear. It was time to join the party, so after making sure she was ready, she headed down the hall.
As Evie walked in, everyone was already there, mingling amongst themselves. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw something glowing and flashing. She looked over and saw Alice, Bucky and Steve standing off to the side and that Bucky’s shirt was the thing that was flashing. Evie walked over and had to shield her eyes.
“Damn Barnes, didn’t know you wanted to be a tree for Christmas.” He flipped her off as the other two laughed.
Alice’s shirt was definitely tamer than everyone else’s, but it was still on the naughty side. “You know, Alice, I think Bucky will have to take that monstrosity off before there’s any plowing.”
We all laughed as she blushed just the tiniest bit.
“Oh shove it. I happen to like his jumper,” she pouted. “Besides, I’ve already told him to keep it on for later. It’ll help him see his present,” she added slyly, waggling her eyebrows. Evie looked away from her giving him bedroom eyes and caught sight of Steve’s shirt, reading it and grinning.
“Hahahaha I like it Steve.” He looked at her in surprise, as did the other two.
“You understand it?” He and Bucky asked at the same time. SHe nodded slowly.
“Well yeah.” Evie reached out and covered the MERI with a hand. “A,” then covered the A. “Meri,” then ran her hand across his chest with a flourish. “Christmas! A Merry Christmas! Get it?” Bucky and Alice nodded with understanding. She grinned up at Steve, feeling incredibly proud. “Nice job Captain.” He smiled and it took all she had to not go weak at the knees. She saw him glance down at her chest, not doubt reading her shirt.
“Wow,” he said with a smirk. “Is that an invitation?” He asked with a wink. Feeling very bold, Evie puffed her chest out a bit and smirked back at him.
“If it is, are you gonna accept it?” she asked coyly. They stood there, grinning at each other, for god knows how long.
“Hey Capiscle! Where’s your girlfriend?” Tony suddenly boomed, clapping Steve on the back. “Oh wait, I forgot. She’s banned from the Tower.” That one word was like having a bucket of ice cold water dumped on Evie. She ducked her head and turned away, catching Alice and Bucky’s gaze. They both smiled knowingly, Alice winking as Bucky threw a thumbs up. She walked away, hurrying to the bathroom to splash cold water on her face.
Evie forgot that Steve was still seeing that Amy chick that Sam had set him up with. Just as Evie had predicted, after Steve had gone over to Amy’s and confessed that he and Evie had slept together, Amy did NOT break up with him, claiming that everyone makes a mistake. Amy wasn’t stupid, and she wasn’t going to let Steve go without a fight. Evie jumped as someone knocked on the door.
“Evie, you alright?” Alice asked, concern evident in her British accent.
“Yeah, I’m alright. Be out in a sec,” the Doctor called back to her, drying her face before opening the door and flashing a quick smile. “I’m good. Let’s party, shall we?” Alice grabbed her arm and pulled her back to everyone. Steve regarded her with a sad look, almost like he regretted saying anything, and her heart sank.
They all took a seat around the fireplace, Tony sitting closest to the tree so he could begin giving out presents. Before long, everyone had a small stack of 12 presents and slowly began to open them, thanking the giver of each one. Finally, Evie had gotten to her last gift, which was from Steve. She took the wrapping paper off and found that it was a picture frame, flipping it over and seeing herself and Steve. They were both sound asleep on the very couch that Evie was sitting on, their arms wrapped around each other like it was the most natural and perfect thing in the world. She was speechless.
“That’s my favorite picture of us,” Steve explained softly, sitting down next to her. Evie raised an eyebrow at him, wanting more of an explanation. “The few times I’ve been in your room, I noticed that there weren’t any pictures of me. So, I found my favorite one and had it framed for you. I hope you like it,” he trailed off. She smiled at him, throwing her arms around him and squeezing.
“I love it. Thank you so much. I’m gonna put it up right next to my bed,” she gushed, releasing him, but he didn’t pull away completely. They sat there, in their own little bubble, just staring at each other. Evie agreed with Zemo, Steve does have a little green in his eyes. Suddenly, Steve’s phone began to ring and vibrate in his pocket, making them both jump. As he fished around trying to get it out, she shook her head and glanced up. Everyone was staring at them, and they all had the same knowing smirk on their faces. Evie felt her face burn as Steve finally wrestled his phone out of his pants and answered it.
“Oh hey babe,” he said, clearly talking to his girlfriend and ignoring everyone. He stood up and began pacing as they talked, going over their plans to spend Christmas Day together. Evie sighed, knowing that it’d never be her on the other end of the phone, making plans to spend the holidays with him. She suddenly couldn’t take being in the same room as him anymore, so she made a break for her room, leaving the presents behind.
************
Evie finally ventured out of her room a couple days after Christmas, feigning that she had been sick to her stomach and didn’t want anyone else to catch it. The rest of the team seemed to halfheartedly accept my explanation, but Alice and Nat eyed her warily afterwards. A few days later, Stark was getting everything together for his annual New Year’s Eve party when Steve announced that he wouldn’t be going, for he would be attending a party with his girlfriend. Evie could feel Alice and Bucky’s gaze on her, watching her reaction to the news. She kept her face as expressionless as possible, only looking up from her tablet for a split second before returning to her work.
#
It was New Year’s Eve, and Stark’s party was in full motion. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Well, at least Evie thought they were having fun. She hadn’t actually been down to the party except to grab a bottle of vodka, choosing instead to hang out on the roof of the Tower ever since, enjoying the peace and q-
BAM
What the hell? She looked over her shoulder in time to see Steve throw his coat to the ground. He didn’t seem very happy.
“Hey sorry. Didn’t know anyone was up here,” he stammered. “I’ll go ahead and leave you alone.” He made to turn when she called out to him.
“No it's okay. There’s plenty of room. Here, sounds like you need a drink,” Evie offered, holding out the half empty bottle to him. He sighed before walking over and grabbing it, holding it up in a salute before taking a big swig. “So...what happened?” she asked warily, not wanting to upset him more. “If you don’t want to tell me, I understand.” He passed back the bottle before sitting down, bowing his head. Evie sat down next to him, setting the bottle down between them after taking another drink.
“Remember how I was going to a party with Amy?” he started.
“Yeah.”
“Well, after we got there we ended up separated, and as it got closer to midnight I couldn’t find her.” His breathing was getting faster. She reached out and rubbed his arm in an attempt to calm him down. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly before continuing. “When I finally did find her, she had another guy's tongue down her throat, but that wasn’t the worst part.” He took another deep breath and went on. “She had her dress hiked to her waist, while his pants were at his ankles.” Steve looked up at Evie, and she wanted to cry. He looked so broken in that moment. Her arms went around him, holding him tightly, willing the pain to be squeezed from him.
“Oh, Steve. I’m so sorry,” she choked out, tears welling in her eyes. He sat there, motionless for a while before she pulled away, realizing that her actions probably bothered him. “Sorry. That was uncalled for.” Damn alcohol. He shrugged.
“S’alright. Not your fault.” He grabbed the bottle and took another drink before putting it down and leaning in towards her. “Wanna know who the guy was?” he whispered, his breath fanning across her face.
“Who was it?” Evie breathed, not wanting to speak any louder that he was.
“Your ex Brian.” Her blood ran cold at the sound of his name. Brian had dumped her all of a sudden a while back. Things were going great between them, or so she had thought, until one day he accused her of flirting with Steve, of all people, and went out and started fucking any girl he could find.
“That bitch. He's not even in our lives anymore and he's still fucking things up!” Evie stood up and began to pace. She heard laughter and when she turned around, Steve was laying on his back, his mirth getting the better of him. “What's so funny Steve?” she snapped, hands on her hips.
“Did you really just call him a bitch?” he gasped, trying to catch his breath.
“Yes I did. Is that funny to you?” When all Evie got was more laughter, she walked back over to him, dropped to her knees and began tickling him. “If you want funny, I'll give you funny.” Steve froze for a moment as his brain processed what was happening, but wasn't long before he began tickling back.
They wrestling around on the roof for a bit, before Steve had maneuvered Evie to her back as he straddled her legs. “Say ‘uncle’ and I'll let you up,” he offered, his hands at the ready to resume his assault on her sides.
“Uncle,” she laughed. He stood before helping her up.
“Hey I can hear the crowd in Times Square counting down,” he said, pointing over in the direction of the lights. “15,14,13,12,11,” he counted out, nodding for her to join him.
Steve and Evie hugged each other, and it felt amazing to start the new year off together. After standing there for a moment, she felt him start to pull away, but as shei made to unhook her arms from around his neck, his lips found hers. She sprang away from him almost instantly, shock evident in both of us.
“Evie, I'm so sorry,” he started to apologize.
“No, Steve, it's fine. Really. You just broke up with your girlfriend, who you had intended on kissing at midnight. It was an accident. Don't worry about it.” Evie was so heartbroken, and it took all her willpower to not cry. “Look, I'm getting tired, so I'm going to go to bed. I'll leave you alone. Happy New Year's Steve.”
***********
The next morning, everyone was in quite the hungover mood. Evie walked out to the common room and headed straight to the fridge to grab a soda. It's the one thing that could clear up her fogginess. Once her head was clear, she started making pancakes, bacon and eggs for everyone. It was the unspoken rule that whoever recovers first makes breakfast. As soon as the smell of bacon began wafting around, the team descended on the kitchen like a horde of zombies. She handed out plates to everyone and they dug in like they hadn't eaten in days.
“Mmm. Well, it's not a Full English breakfast, but it'll do,” Alice mumbled from beside Bucky.
“Oh, I'm sorry your Majesty, but seeing as how this is New York and not London, this is what you're gonna get,” Evie snapped at her. Bucky shot her a shocked look while Alice looked dumbfounded. Alice and Evie haven't gotten on very well since she, Bucky, Steve and the others came back from Wakanda. Evie tends to find Alice a bit abrasive and Alice tends to find Evie a bit thick. Evie closed her eyes and counted to ten while taking deep breaths. “I'm sorry. That came out harshly. I'm hungry and my head still kinda hurts.” Alice narrowed her eyes, scowling for a while before nodding curtly in understanding as Evie turned back to the stove.
“It's alright,” she replied. “Were you even at the party last night? How are you not as miserable as the rest of us?” Evie turned back to add the last of the pancakes and bacon to the platter before fixing her own plate.
“Well I didn't go to the party. I was up on the roof.” Alice quirked an eyebrow so she elaborated. “I'm not big on crowds or parties, so I grabbed a bottle of vodka and hung out on the roof.” She finished the rest of her food before grabbing their plates and taking them to the sink with hers. She heard a chair scrape back and then Bucky’s amused voice.
“Damn Steve, what time did you get in last night?” Evie peeked over her shoulder at Steve, who had grabbed a plate and was loading it with food. “Did you and Amy ring in the new year?” Her face burned as she remembered who Steve was with at midnight.
“No we didn't. I came back shortly before 12.” She turned back towards them, drinking her soda as they talked.
“Well then, where were you?” Bucky asked. Steve and Evie locked eyes again.
“I was up on the roof with Evie,” he answered proudly. Evie bowed her head to regain her composure before looking back up and seeing Alice watching her, a Cheshire cat grin across her face.
“So, you two spent the night together,” she mused.
“No. Not like that,” Evie began to explain before Alice cut her off.
“Not like what? Two people standing on the roof at the same time?” she asked innocently. “What did you think I meant?” Shit. Alice backed her into a corner, and they both knew it.
“That we were together, ‘cause we're not, er, weren't,” the Doctor stammered. The Slayer leaned forward on the breakfast bar, a satisfied smirk on her face.
“You were together though. Both of you were on the roof at the same time, which means you were together, right?” she reasoned, the smuggest she’s ever been. Bucky was giving Steve the same look that Alice was giving Evie, but he showed no signs of discomfort. Evie, on the other hand, was about to fold like a cheap suit. “Or does the word ‘together’ mean something different here than it does over in England?”
“No, no, that’s what I thought you meant.” Her face fell the tiniest bit as Evie found a way around the implied meaning. “Steve and I were together at midnight. We ended last year together, and we started this year together.”
“Cute,” she huffed.
“Did Steve ever tell you what he caught his ex doing? Or who?” Everyone gasped as they all looked to Steve, while he shot her his best ‘really?’ look. Evie shrugged in response. “What? You’ve spilled a secret, so why can’t I?” He shook his head at her.
“Evie’s ex-boyfriend,” he said simply.
“Wait a damn minute here,” Sam cut in. “You mean to tell us that Amy, Steve’s now ex-girlfriend, cheated on him with Brian, Evie’s ex-boyfriend?” Everyone exchanged glances as they processed this information.
“Ask Steve. He’s the one who saw it,” Evie argued. Sam wasn’t letting it go though.
“So, out of the billions of men on this planet, the one that she chooses to hook up with, completely at random, was your ex?” Everyone was looking at her, waiting for an explanation.
“Yeah, I guess so. What? I’m not his damn keeper.” It had suddenly hit her as to why it seemed so suspicious. “Do you think I had something to do with it?” she asked, incredulous. “When on earth would I have the time to do that and, why would I do that?” No one seemed to believe her. “Brian broke up with me, okay? Someone lit his car on fire and told him to dump me or the next thing on fire was going to be him,” she confessed. Evie was so worried about trying to get everyone to believe her that she missed the look that Bucky gave Alice.
“Well, then if you didn’t hook them up, then how the hell did they end up at the same party?” Nat asked.
“They must have a mutual friend and that’s how they got invited to the same party, or else…” she trailed off before turning to Steve, who had this delighted yet disapproving look on his face. “Where was this party at?” He thought about it for a bit, before answering.
“The Aurora.” Well, son of a bitch.
“That’s Brian’s apartment building. I’m guessing it was a building wide party, so all the tenants were invited. That’s how they met,” she pointed out proudly.
“Amy’s best friend lives there too, so yeah that had to be how they found each other,” Steve added. Everyone seemed to accept the theory and went about their day. Nat however, didn’t appear to be entirely convinced.
“Well, has anyone come forward to ask you out?” she asked. Evie shook her head.
“No, but that’s the thing. Someone obviously wanted me single, and yet not one gentleman caller,” she lamented. Alice chose this point to add in her two cents.
“Maybe they were waiting for the perfect guy to become single himself.” Alice caught Evie’s eye and winked before gesturing between her and Steve. “You both are single now, perhaps for your next relationship, you should look closer to home.” Bucky chuckled to himself at Alice’s statement before Steve silenced him with a look.
“Well,” Nat piped up. “I know this really great girl, who can be a bit of a flake sometimes, that would be good for Steve. She’s out of state right now, so it’ll have to be after she gets back.”
“Great. Can’t wait to meet her,” Steve said, somewhat enthusiastically. Nat smiled at him before eyeing Evie out the corner of her eye.
“I’ll set it up then. In the meantime, should you find someone else that you want to be with instead, go for it.” She leaned forward and dropped her voice. “Because you know what they say, the best way to get over someone, is to get underneath someone else.” Steve’s eyes got big as the full meaning of her statement sank in.
“That’s called a sexorcism,” Evie blurted before blushing. The four of them turned to her, making her blush even more. “Where was all this advice when I got dumped? I could’ve used it and gotten one. Hell, I still could do with one.” She buried her face in her hands as Steve snorted.
“I could definitely use one too,” he added. The chance to be Steve’s rebound was right in front of Evie, but she wanted to be more than that to him, so she stayed silent.
“Well, I’m going to go. Hope you all enjoyed breakfast.” Evie walked around the bar and headed down the hall to her room, needing a cold shower to fight off these hormones.
