I very much prefer the Australian version (sorry OLC phans) BUT there is one aspect of the London version I prefer.

Everyone remembers the scene where Christine reads Raoul's letter. Simon Gleeson's performance I find is more cold, like he's trying not to show how much leaving Christine is affecting him. Either that or he's finally accepted he messed up and that she's in love with someone else and is ready to move on. It's an okay acting choice but not my favorite.

And then there's Joseph Milson on the London cast recording. You can tell from the first lyric "Little Lotte, I beg you, forgive me," that he is about toe burst into tears. His singing sounds like weeping and it just stabs me through the heart. I'm not a big Raoul fan, but that moment made me feel for him. He's lost the love of his life and his best friend not just because he made a stupid bet, but because he was slowly losing her with drinking and gambling and now she loves someone else on top of it. You definitely feel pity if not empathy in full force.

Also, BEN LEWIS. Oh my God, this moment almost killed me. After Christine says, "Those two people are gone," he just gets this look of shock on his face as if to say, "Wait, he actually left? He knew I didn't mean it right?" He feels sorry for Raoul in the moment and when Raoul sings "May your Angel of Music watch over you now," he gets this look of "Don't bring me into this!" He seems saddened that Christine and Raoul's relationship is over because Raoul has nothing left now. And last but not least, he goes over to comfort Christine at the end of the letter, almost to console her over the loss of a friend. He gives a final sigh as if to say, "I won...but what a cost."
