Neon city side 1
The truck smells awful, but you get used to the mixture of oil, dirt, and grease and soon it means Dad. Dad drove with one hand, and never with a shortfall of things to say. Today was different I could tell he was stewing on something. He was silent the entire drive to the station and now with only a block or so left I could tell he was about to burst. I turned away from him to look out the window at the dirty city sliding by. It looked better from above. “BB I want you to promise me something.” “Sure Dad.” He took a deep breath then he was off. “I know you are in high school now, and you are very much smart enough to make your own decisions. I want you to promise me you won’t go into the Pit no matter how much quicker or easier it is for you.” “But dad you wouldn't have to drive me to the station every day. I could just walk to the Gedler street station. I would barely be in Pit, its practically still our district.” He let out a sigh and brought the car up the sidewalk in front of the South Vythe station. “When I was a kid BB things were much simpler. The Pit was a good place to live, one I’d love for you to have grown up in, but that was all before the wave. We’re normals honey, and people like us don’t belong there anymore. It’s not safe for us. If you aren’t wave you arent welcome in the Pit.” “Dad you can’t tell if most people are Wave or not. I would only be there for a few minutes each day. They wouldn't even notice me.” He was getting angry now, flustered. “But you would be on their line going to school and coming home. Who knows when one of them will blow himself up or toss the damn train off the tracks. And while you're at it don’t associate with any of them while you are in school. They can’t be trusted BB. You need to understand what side you are on.” “If I can figure out who they are.” We both refused to look at each other after that. I wanted to leave, I opened the door and started to get out. “BB I love you and I just... Who knows what could happen. Just promise me BB. please.” “I promise dad.” I closed the door behind me and made a smile for him as he pulled away. When he was around the corner I tightened my bag to my back and pulled back my hair and twisted it tight. I looked at the roof of the train station and made the slightest move with my legs and I was there. I could see Gedler street station in the distance a few miles away. The city changed from dirty to destroyed in those few miles. It told a story of division I was stuck right in the middle of. It took a few hops but I was there with less effort than it took for a fat man to change the tv station. Then I was on the tracks as a train blasted by me in a gust of air. A train filled with people like me. I was on top of the train as it flew towards center station, towards Neon High. I left the train for more roof tops, for trucks on the highway, anything that got me where I was going. I beat the train to city center with no trouble at all. Nothing can keep up with me.
