“Won’t I do?” “Yes, you’ll do very well indeed.”

Before ’70s sexploitation or the Carmilla webseries came along, there was this movie. The titular character, Countess Marya Zaleska, ostensibly desires an eternal male companion, but it’s hard not to read lesbian shadings into the characterization. The predatory nature of vampires is of course troubling, although Marya is portrayed rather sympathetically; sadly it’s also possible to read her desire to break free of her vampirism as a desire for romantic “normalcy” as well. Just good to keep in mind that the portrayal of queer characters in media is nothing new, and was in fact expressly forbidden in the old days of American cinema. From Joseph Breen, head of the PCA (which enforced this sort of censorship), on this scene in particular: 

“This will need very careful handling to avoid any questionable flavor. The present suggestion that Lili poses in the nude will be changed…The whole sequence will be treated in such a way as to avoid any suggestion of perverse sexual desire on the part of Marya or of an attempted sexual attack by her upon Lili.”
