The small vial [Jorge] held in his fingers was worth a lot - to no one's surprise, as it contained the closest thing to a Cure that the humankind managed to create. Liquid gold, as some called it, slowing down the progress of the Flare, giving you an extra week or so - and taking away your sobriety as its effect. A win-win situation for some group of people, surely.

Jorge toyed with the bottle in his hand. Maybe Janson deserved to end up a crank on a chain, as just another one of their guard dogs, he thought.

He pictured the assistant director with a collar around his throat, the skin around it bruised and wounded as the effect of blue veins spreading inside his body, as well as self-inflicted injury, created by mindless pulling and struggling against the chain holding him in place. No one would want him back in such a state; he'd be his property.

And that thought sounded way too pleasant.
