This week, pianist Masaru Sakuma and I recorded the iconic “Alma Cruceña,” a song by composer Jorge Luna and poet Raúl Otero Reiche, popularized by the famous Bolivian singer Gladys Moreno. The song lauds the beauty of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the largest city in #Bolivia, located in the eastern tropical lowlands. Gladys Moreno was an alto with a powerful low range, so we commissioned the incredible composer, arranger, and pianist Patricia Bedregal Velasco to arrange the tune for us in a key for high voice. I would also be remiss if I didn’t thank voice teacher and conductor Carlos Illanes Gutierrez for the fabulous idea that this song would be great as an encore or final number on a concert!
