De Moivre And His Goddamn Formula, Am I Right????
hi everyone this is a song that most of the month of April was focused on, at least in terms of music making.
It started out with me wanting to try making a hiphop kinda beat with a laidback shuffle, and then I kept obsessively adding to it, using a LITERAL voice synth that I created earlier this year for the lead (I literally took a recording of my voice, sampled it, and turned it into a synth), another strange microtonal kinda instrument as a lead (that I honestly do not know what to call), and a lot of chorus and phaser and flanger effects and stuff!!!!!!!!!
The namesake is due to me making this around the time I learned about De Moivre's Formula in Pre-calc. I thought it would be funny to name an Ableton project after some random thing I learned about in school, and it just happened to be De Moivre's Formula for this.
Also, his name is really fun to pronounce; [də mwavʁ].
Some fun facts about this song I guess: - The weird microtonal instrument that starts around 2:24 cannot change pitch in the midi roll, so I had to automate its pitch by hand, which is why it only really plays on downbeats and in pulses. Also, due to the possibilities of messing up notes even more, I accidentally made some of the notes microtonal! I decided to keep them because they felt really fun.
The only reason the notes in the midi roll change is because it helped me keep track of the pitches easier, but I still kinda lost track lol. - When making just about everything that had a pitch in this song, I finally let go of the mindblock I had which was stopping me from putting in notes that technically "clashed" with everything else. I don't know how to explain it well really, but I can thank Hakita and the Ultrakill Fraud soundtrack for helping. - This is actually the first finished song I've made this year with a complex time signature and full time signature changes, at least I think? Then again, I haven't finished many songs this year. - To get the shuffle for the drums, I think I quantized them with these settings:
Or maybe it was quantized to 1/16 + 1/16T, I can't remember if I'm being honest. - Around 1:57, I made a sidechain for the lead that I automated myself. I forgot how to do a sidechain and didn't wanna go through the hassle of trying to make it fit my exact needs for the song because I wanted to have the sidechain in a specific way, and I thought the only way to do that was to automate it myself. That was a relatively intelligible sentence compared to everything else in this post, sorry.
Anyways yeah I am pretty proud of this song so thank you a lot for reading and for listening.
