The iconic Jabalpur Ordnance and Guncarriage Assembly, better known as the Jonga, was based on the Nissan Patrol 60 vehicle. Inducted in the early 1960s, it went on to become the workhorse of the Indian armed forces for close to four decades. Its high ground clearance, a reliable and powerful 3596cc engine, and rugged build enabled it to make traversing inhospitable terrain seem like child's play. The Jonga proved to be extremely versatile as well, with many being modified to serve as ambulances, signal jeeps, recovery vehicles and highly mobile RCL gun platforms (pictured at bottom right) that were the bane of Pakistani armour. Several examples were also used by Indian military rally teams. It was only in 1999 that the last Jonga rolled off the VFJ (Vehicle Factory Jabalpur) production line. They were to be replaced by the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, but at least 6,000 of them were still bouncing around military facilities according to a CAG report in 2005. Many have since ended up in the scrapyard but a small number are in private hands, ensuring the preservation of a glorious piece of Indian military heritage.
