Acoustic / Folk from Canada on Tour: Jom Comyn
Jom Comyn from Edmonton, Canada will embark his first EU Tour soon! Check him out. All dates and more infos can be found on his Facebook page
You are coming to Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, and Scandinavia soon. Is this your first European Tour? Yes, first time in Europe, first time in all of these countries. Very excited to see them all! For how long are you playing music as Jom Comyn? I've been playing as Jom Comyn since 2008. I put out my first album in 2010, and I've been playing around Edmonton mostly. I did a solo tour like this in Canada 2 times, in 2012 and 2014, but I kept hearing great things from all of my Canadian friends when they played in Europe, so I was looking for a chance to go see. What are your influences? I never know how to answer this question. I listened to a lot of regular radio rock and pop growing up, and then I just started listening for whatever sounds interested me at the time. I guess I'm still influenced by my favourite things in high school. My two favourite albums in high school were probably Kind of Blue and the first Clash album, and even today, I feel like my songs are going for the feeling I felt when I first heard cool jazz, but I'm getting there via ugly guitar chords and distortion. Did you book the tour yourself? Yes, I just started sending emails. I had a great help in the beginning from another Edmonton musician who lives in Toronto now, Eamon McGrath. He's been to Europe dozens of times, and he was very generous with his advice. Will you have a support act with you? No, it's just me this time. There are local support acts on a few shows, so I'm looking forward to meeting all of them. And I'd like to bring my band on the road with me sometime! What was your favorite tour you've ever been on? Well I haven't done very many, but the last one I did was a lot of fun. I drove from Toronto to Halifax, and I met a lot of friends along the way. But the first one was great too, I rode the train across Canada. I'm looking forward to seeing Europe on the train too. Do you have a favourite band / record? Probably Sandinista by the Clash. What was the first show you ever attended? When I was 6, I went with my mom and sister to see Alanis Morrissette at the big arena in Edmonton, so that was pretty cool. Are you going to play a cover song in your set each night? If yes, which one is it? I picked a few, but I don't know which ones I'll pick. I kind of like to keep it secret, keep it a surprise. They're all Canadian songs. How is the scene in your hometown Edmonton like? Edmonton is constantly blessed by having a never ending stream of great music. One scene thrives and builds up amazing bands, then it recedes, and there's already a whole new group from the ashes of the old group, and other groups that are totally unrelated, and they form a new scene, and on and on and on. I've only been around for about 10 years but I've already seen like 5 or 6 of these, and the results are always great. Right now a lot of it is coming from Sweety Pie records. They just put out records from Wares and Marlaena Moore. And totally unrelated to that, there's a band called tuques, whose ep is pretty much perfect top to bottom. And totally unrelated to that, my pal Mitchmatic has always been the best, and he's always getting better. Here's his latest, which I consider a real masterpiece.
