Did you know that one in seven people suffer from #food insecurity in the U.S.? At the same time, the USDA estimates 30 to 40% of the country’s food supply ends up as #waste.
Donating recovered food to a local food bank diverts waste and helps feed the hungry. A food bank gathers and sorts food, and then distributes the inventory to individual food pantries throughout the area. The food pantries then directly serve their communities. Some food pantries will also accept donations directly. If you want to make a big impact, consider starting a gleaning program in your #community. Gleaning is the process of collecting excess fresh food from #farms, grocers, restaurants and any other sources to provide the food to those in need.

According to the UNESCO-IHE Institute for #Water #Education, a #vegetarian #diet could reduce #waterConsumption by about 58% per person in the U.S.
Committing to going meatless even just once a week can make a big difference, and meatless meals don’t have to be boring. You can find full-flavor vegetarian recipes for almost anything—from chili and soup to stir-fry, pasta and even tacos.
If you’re concerned about #protein, look for recipes with nuts, seeds, beans or tofu—all are great sources of protein. Even avocados make a nice addition. Though technically a fruit, avocados pack almost double the protein of most #vegetables, as well as an arsenal of essential amino acids.
Day 6 #48DaysOfBlue - Waste is Wack 💚
As you go through your day, take inventory of everything you throw away. Write each item down, no matter how small. At the end of the day, note what you could have kept out of the waste stream.
Could you have taken your morning coffee in a reusable cup? Maybe your vegetable shavings from dinner could have been composted. Did you recycle that soda bottle? Could a linen napkin replace the single use paper alternative?
We’re all accountable for what we let go to waste. Recognizing the areas where we can improve and making incremental change is a monumental step toward a #wastefree lifestyle (or at least one with less waste).

Day 5 #48DaysOfBlue - Skip the Stream 💚
Did you know? You can save up to 20 gallons of #water by skipping the stream each time you wash your dishes!
Looking for more ways to conserve water while washing dishes? Don’t get too generous with the dish soap. Those extra suds translate to extra water—reduce rinse time by using only the soap you need.
If you’re using a dishwasher, make sure you have a full load before hitting start, and opt for an eco-friendly detergent.
