Happy birthday to John Workman! John was Heavy Metal’s art director from 1977-83, and published a few stories in the magazine at that time. He is better known as one of the greatest letterers of all time, working with Walt Simonson on Thor for many years, as well as lettering Grant Morrison’s entire Doom Patrol run. You may remember his style from many other titles, including Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, Cosmic Odyssey, and Legion of Super-Heroes. . Here’s a big, bloody panel from the “Alien” graphic novel adaptation Walt and Archie Goodwin did for Heavy Metal back in 1979. It was the first graphic novel ever to make the New York Times Bestseller List.
