â I mightâve, maybe, not slept in a bit. Quite a while really.   Could be better if itâs not just me, might feel a little easier. â
militarytrash (theories about clown school)
âYouâd come visit me, yeah? Iâm sure Iâll look a right laugh with all that make up on my wrinkles, probably juggling since I canât trapeze with a false hip.â

âYou say that like itâs all so black and white. If you do something awful, surely caring doesnât make a difference? You still did it...?â

"Alex, Alex, can you please just... stop talking for a minute?" He sat down heavily, putting his head in his hands and pressing the heels of his palms into his eyes.
She fought to keep her breathing steady, sheâd been speaking so fast she hadnât even noticed her body working itself up. Nodding, she covered her face with her hands basically panting to keep air going in and out of her lungs.
âI volunteer!â
Her clothes were damp. Drizzle settled in on her hair setting a chill through her bones that somehow seemed appropriate for the reaping. She held her sisters hand tight, her fingers laced together in what was supposed to be a comforting gesture. The only time Alex held Moiraâs hand was always here - in this crowd where it felt like maybe if she clung on tight enough they couldnât be torn apart. Most of the crowd of girls were staring for the stage, or at the younger set to the front where a chorus of sniffles could be heard.
They were lucky, the kids of District Two. There was usually some hot shot who wanted to try their luck after a year or two training, or the career schools had chosen a favourite likely to win the games altogether. Even still, for the smaller children the weight of what was about to happen must be sinking in.
The microphone buzzed to life, and Alex tuned out from the same speech they heard every year from a metal clad escort. Instead she focused on the back of her brothers head, standing on her far left. He stood there, with Severin a few rows in front trying to puff his chest out. Trying to seem brave. It was Sebastianâs last year in the reaping, if he could make it though this one then they would be safe. The rest of them might have to go through it a few more times but heâd be able to finish his peacekeeping training and theyâd have enough money to only have their names in once each. You could pick people out in the crowd who came from the south side of town where they called home through a mixture of darned clothing and scruffy coats.
She had tuned out for so long that only Moiraâs gasp of ânoâ brought her rushing back to life. âWhat?ââNo - no, notâŚâ
The stern hands were in her shoulders before she triggered what was happening, fighting against their grip as they pulled her towards the stage. âI wasnât doing anything, I didnât⌠What the bloody hellâŚâ
But by the time she hit the foot of the steps it was beginning to sink in. They must have called her name. And that meant one thing to her, Sebastian wasnât safe. Heâd shout out and volunteer for her sake, he couldnât let her walk to her death knowing that maybe the rest of her family would be alright. He had to keep her safe.
She couldnât really see through her watery eyes, through sheer stubbornness she wouldnât let herself cry. She was expecting it when the shout came from the boys side of the crowd but it didnât sound like her brother. It sounded likeâŚ
John. Wiping her eyes harshly in her sleeve she watched as John pushed past Sebastian, muttering something as he made his way to the small wooden platform without hesitating. She wasnât sure if she was more relieved of furious, there wasnât really time to make things out for sure as bodies pushed her towards the entrance of the Justice building. They moved in silence to a room just left off of the entrance, Alex and John shoved in and locked there without instruction.
Now that she had a moment to think, she walked straight over to him. And aimed a punch straight for his jaw. âYou fucking idiot! Do you know what youâve done!? Youâre going to die trying to be brave, what was the damn point in that?â

âWhatâs that supposed to mean, Doc?â
