no because when they meet john doesn't trust charlie and charlie doesn't believe john and billy is telling him john is trouble. so there's like this vibe that neither of them knows what to do with. john even acts out and gets a little aggressive with charlie at one point because he thinks sheriff who insists it was an animal attack + is giving me gay feelings = bad news. but then charlie is so soft and open with him and they drink and watch tv and maybe have a little conversation in the kitchen about kids and about being out of their depths with them and maybe charlie casually slips his arm behind him on the couch, john is like oh shit oh fuck. and so he leaves because what else can he do. all he ever does is leave when he doesn't know how to handle something. and afterwards he does think about charlie sometimes, but he knows that charlie is better off far away from him. there hasn't been any new suspicious activity in forks so he thinks charlie is safe. safer than he'd ever be around him.
rip john you would have loved twilight. king died just at the wrong time, he could have swooped in to save charlie from the big bad vampires and wolves in town. but then he probably would have ended up killing edward, thus making charlie hate him (because bella hates him).
