I have a lot of true stories on my shelves, but this is one I am truly fascinated by. I have followed news articles and documentaries about this story. I haven't fully completed this book, but wow John Glatt depicts this story so incredibly. If you haven't heard of the Clevland abductions and rescues look it up or watch the Netflix show.

Secrets in the Cellar: A true story of the Austrian incest case that shocked the world by John Glatt
My rating: 2 of 5 stars Short book, easy read. Most of it consists more of neighbors saying 'I can't believe it,' rather than talking about the actual crime. It also repeats major (and minor) points several times seemingly for no reason. My version was also missing the "8 pages of shocking photos". Not bad if you know nothing about what happened but if you are looking for something in-depth, continue looking. A disappointment on the whole. View all my reviews

The U.K. (top) and North American covers of John Glatt’s 1998 Grimaldi family biography. It is curious that the publishers chose to fudge “ruling” into “royal” for the version released in the USA. I can only assume the marketing team at St. Martin’s Press thought it more pleasing to American sensibilities. After all, who gives a flip about a so-called “princely family” anyway?

I think you've answered this before, but I couldn't find the post, sorry. So I have to ask this again: I'm planning on buying a Bio of River, which book would you recommend?
one: Don’t worry, we don’t mind answering again. Favourite bio depends a lot on fan. Our favourite one, because we consider it the first “complete” one and because of its style (quite objective with all people/events) is John Glatt one.
Our second favourite, especially because it includes things from all previous books and new personal research, is Barry C. Lawrence one (“In search of River Phoenix”). Many fans consider it most complete book about him and we use it a lot to locate info/quotes (then we go to previous sources, but is a very good book for first searches).
My coadmin always says there isn’t a perfect bio (because complete and always some mistakes… and she’s right) and she always recommends “Pink” by Gus Van Sant: is not a bio, is not completely about River, but is written from love and since it’s a different kind of book doesn't need to be “exact” or perfect. However I must tell you is a little bit weird, adorable but weird, and probably not what you are looking for right now xD
We also love Lumet book, “Making movies”: is great as cinema book but he doesn’t talk so much about River (more about other actors like Brando or other films not only “Running on empty”). But if you like books about films and you see it around not very expensive, or at library, try it! :-)
