Hennepin History: Black Golfers and the John F. Glanton Collection

Golf has a long history of racial discrimination and exclusion.  How did African-American golfers in the Twin Cities respond to this inequity and practice the sport they loved? What organizations did they form and where did they play? Author Tina Burnside answers these questions and more in her article “Twin Cities’ Black Golfers Have a Legacy of Fighting Discrimination” appearing in the current issue of Hennepin History magazine.

Illustrating Burnside’s article are these photos of Twin Cities’ golfers from the John F. Glanton Collection.  During the late 1940s, Glanton took over 800 photographs of events, gatherings, and individuals in the local Black community.  In addition to more photos of golf, Glanton photographed local athletes playing football, basketball, baseball, and even bowling.

The entire John F. Glanton Collection can be viewed in the Hennepin County Library Digital Collections.  Many of the individuals pictured in the collection are unidentified.  If you see someone you know, let us know!
