John Doh, reading to much into food.
Eating alone is depressing, but shopping for one is easier, so as long as John remembers that the only reason he is lonely is because he prefers Weetbix and that a companion may meen he has to compramise, he can wake up in the morning. A person shopping tells you allot about them. If its full of fresh fruit, vibrant pickles, various cuts of meat, good bread, cheese, toilet paper, cleaning products and enough cereal bars to feed a small nation living off of packed lunches, there's a good chance these items will be enjoyed by a happy, health conscious and financially stable family. Jumbo size pack of dim sim, pies, 6 loaves of home brand bread, large jar of Vegemite, oil , green cordial and a jumbo box of assorted potato chips. Then you’re probably looking at normal families. Chocolate, Chips, donuts and three bad comedy's on special you’re probably looking at the shopping off someone with serious self esteem issues. Or possilby just a stoner.
John looks down at his basket (already a keyhole into the life of John) small lasagna, Roast meal for one, one loaf of bread, half of which he intends to freeze so it doesn’t go stale, Smallest box of Weetbix, 1 liter of milk, four cupped noodles, 7 small cans of tuna and a packet of mixed leaves which will probably go soggy at the bottom of his fridge. John sighs as he imagines how much happier he would be if he could buy toilet paper and washing up liquid every week rather than every six.
As he looks up he see's a middle aged woman drop all her shopping. John is shy but he has etiquette. He also misses female companionship, so helps her pick up her shopping whilst investigating her with every item. A healthy choice micro meal, for one...good sign. One Chicken fillet, home cooked meal for a single lady maybe? Then he saw the penultimate indication that this wonderful clumsy woman is a potential candidate for John’s heart. A raisin toast mini loaf. The ultimate sign of someone who is lonely. Mini loafs are a rip off, only singles would buy. There half the size of a normal loaf but three quarters the price. She obviously hasn’t been alone for long otherwise she would have figured this out and done the half and half freeze technique john mastered years ago. This means she may be highly emotional and this is the perfect time for John. Her Knight in shining armor, comes in and sweep her of her feet. He reaches for the loaf and that's when it happens. That slightly awkward yet romantic moment where two strangers accidently touch hands.  John feels that it gives both potential candidates, an opportunity to feel each others warmth and realize that this little encounter is fate. He lets go and she puts the loaf in her basket.
John catches her eye. She looked quite average before, John doesn’t know if its the warmth of her hand or how naive she is about buying bread, but suddenly she looks beautiful…he gets caught up in the moment, and suddenly gains confidence. "Doh...John Doh" That was slick, how can this not work?
"Oh err cool….. Irene. You drive a taxi right? I think you drove me home a few times"
John decides that this is the ultimate sign of interest and does the unthinkable.
"I always find it difficult to finish a whole box of Weetbix before they go stale....would you like to come over for dinner one day?"
"excuse me?"
"I thought.."
"Is this why picked up my shopping?"
"No I was jus..."
"..You’re such a typical male. You think you can just show some good manners and a woman is just going to keel over for you...”
"I didn’t mean to sou...”
"Forget it pall, have it a good day."
As she walks off John realizes she has a box of Sultana Bran in her basket. It obviously wasn't meant to be.
John Doh-Food Court mob
2 30 pm Saturday at the taxi rank outside the local shopping plaza. This is a significant time, for John but also the most risky one. You’re either making money or losing money. He is very aware of the two groups of customers; he is keeping an eye out for. The good and the bad who are probably ugly, little and wearing colorful surf gear. The Good: Family's with big fat mum’s, skinny tattooed dads and two children with mullets and Ben ten pajama t-shirts OR Old ladies/ Old couples (never an old man by himself as they pretend they can still drive). Both groups have the same routine. They both go to the plaza food court, at 12 30 pm and purchase lunch. The family will get something with chips and gravy or something with noodles, honey and what appears to be battered testicles. The mother will eat a large serving, whilst the kids split a big box of something and the dad will just have a coke and pretend there’s bourbon in it. The Older couple will get a modest plate of pasta salad or a sandwich and talk about......oh fuck, who knows.  ANYWAY by about 1 pm they will both go into there desired cloth store. The Family will go into the surf store and will inevitably have the same argument they have every week with there Son as he persists that he really does need the blue, green and yellow, high top, velcro strapped, cushion tongued Globe sneakers, whilst the store clerk stands there seemingly distracted by the suspicious looking bad, ugly surf gear wearing 15 year old, who seem to be looking at the cloth's like there nervously thinking about asking them on a date. The old Couple will either go to K mart or Big W and buy the new necessity there oldest child told them they needed to live in this day and age. This takes half an hour longer than the family, who need a head start to get there food shopping done, as that’s the biggest ordeal of the day, due to the sons need for everything that’s colorful and tastes good with milk, preferably with a free toy. by 1 30 pm the old couple are also in the super market, and gather the same items they have been buying for ten years in less than an hour which brings them to 2 15. They have to spend a bit of time finding a good checkout though as majority of them seemed to be filled with hyper kids eating fruit loops out the box, driving there parents insane. 2.25 pm Both types of good customers head towards the taxi rank.  The bad who are probably ugly, little and wearing colorful surf gear: These guys start there day a little bit earlier. They get to the plaza at about 11 am and there’s usually about 10 of them collectively, though they don't have to stick together. The first thing they do is sit outside and....well no body knows but them, but it usually involves them trying to all get a free cigarette each, whether its from a complete stranger or the one friend who is stupid enough to announce he has a full 40 deck of PJ Reds. By about 11 30am  there all stocked up on nicotine so they decide to do a circle around the plaza. 11 40am, the pursuit of nicotine repeats itself. 12 15 Pm, these guys usually spend as little time as at home as possible so they head to the nearest McDonald’s for an early/late, lunch/breakfast. 10 of them enter, and they manage to get everyone something to eat for less than $20. A few suckers are having two 50C cones for lunch and a few of the older more privileged kids will get a cheese burger and a small fry. Sometimes they will have a sucker for a friend, (usually the one who loses his 40 deck of cigarettes in a matter of hours) He will buy a Big Mac meal, and will have to give at least one bite to everyone and if he buys a milkshake, regardless of the size, he's fucked. They will then take up half of McDonalds for the next 45 minutes. Until they decide its time for there daily steal. They will all go into the local surf store and try and blend in with all the other families. They will spend about twenty minutes staring at the clothing, but at the same time watching the store assistant out the corner of there eye. When he/she goes into the shoe room to get some whining child a pair of blue, green and yellow, high top, velcro strapped, cushion tongued Globe sneakers they will grab a few items of clothing each. Most of the time they will be spotted so they will put it back but at least one lucky bastard will get out of there with about $70 worth of merchandise. 1 pm another pursuit for nicotine. 1.30 pm its time to stand outside the plaza in which they have just robed, to flog the new gear to one of the older scaly wags for $30. Money that will be spent on a gram of Marijuana and a 20 pack of the cheapest cigarettes. 2pm products been sold and they are hassling the store clerk at the surf store who is trying to have his lunch to buy them smokes. He refuses so they ask a homeless man, who agrees to do it as long as he gets two of them. 2 15 pm there outside the taxi rank waiting for a taxi to take them to there dealers. 2.30PM John is heading towards the taxi rank trying to spot who he wants to pick up. A big group of kids are standing in the road trying to do 360s and tail whips on there scooters. John pretends he hasn't spotted them and makes no attempt to slow down. They all scatter and one of them spits on his taxi. This is good because now he has an excuse not to pick them up, as he knows they probably only have $20 which they need for drugs, so they were inevitably planning to pull a runner. He sees a family of four, fat mother, skinny father and two feral toddlers. They will pay and they will be perfectly polite but he knows they live in the Bronx which is only $10 away. Then he see's gold. An old couple. pensioners usually retire just on the edge of town between farmland and civilization. These two customers are going to put at least $30 in john’s pocket. He pulls over. 2.30 pm Your either making money or losing money. Johns been doing this for years, he knows how to play the game.Â
