I like all the John Cleaver books, but I especially love the contrast between John and Kanta in Mr. Monster. John is a psychopath, completely unable to access the emotional worlds of others. Meanwhile Kanta is an empath in the truest sense of the word. He has no choice but to feel EXACTLY what the people around him feel. And yet who's the hero? Not the guy who happens to have empathy. Empathy is not a synonym for goodness. It's a shortcut a lot of people take, but it doesn't always lead there, and it's not the only way to get there. I like that.

Over Your Dead Body was my favourite out of the series so far, but also what the fuck was that ending??

the first book of the john cleaver series is fun and entertaining, and while it’s dark and “scary” at some points, I still thought it was very tame which made a lot of sense given the fact that it’s Y/A. So I assumed the rest of the series would be pretty tame too, then I got to the last 30% of mr monster and was horrified, sick to my stomach and genuinely shocked that this was part of the same series.
