Rookie Joe Mullen’s Lightning Strike in 1982
On January 5, 1982, Joe Mullen proved he belonged in the NHL. After splitting early-season time between St. Louis and the CHL, he scored his first two NHL goals just eight seconds apart against the Minnesota North Stars, a Blues record that still stands.
The goals came during a wild 19-second stretch that produced three total markers, ranking as the fifth-fastest trio of goals in NHL history. Mullen finished his rookie year with 59 points in just 45 games and added 18 more in the playoffs, narrowly missing Calder Trophy consideration.
A breakout moment that signaled the rise of one of hockey’s great undrafted stars.
