Thank you to LOOK Magazine (Art Gallery of New South Wales) for their formal announcement of Joan Ross' Sydney Modern Project hoarding commission. Joan's imaginative interpretation of Sydney Harbour is a contemporary mash of colonial-era drawings and prints by Joseph Lycett and an extension of Joan's critically and commercially successful 2019 exhibition 'Collectors Paradise'. 'We have sung the same songs for millions of years', 2019 will be on display for 12 months at the Sydney Modern construction site. The Team T Shirts have landed for Joan Ross' Virtual Reality work "Did you ask the river?" on view @sydneycontemporary part of Installation Contemporary. This is the first time audiences will have the opportunity to experience an immersive VR work at an art fair in Australia. Joan’s work is deeply critical of the colonial history of Australia, using open narratives, disruptive chronologies, and faux playful collaging to re-vision nineteenth-century European aesthetics. Her acclaimed video works combine visual elements from a variety of early colonial Australian paintings and contemporary life, so as to re-conceptualise and problematise our relationship to both. The resulting videos are irresistibly beautiful while illustrating the brutality of colonialism’s legacy through a lens of black humour. For updates on our participation in Sydney Contemporary, please email: [email protected]. Commissioned by the Mordant Family for the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (@acmionline), Melbourne.
