JOANovARC ā The Victoria Bikersā Pub, Coalville, UK (31st October 2019)
āNew queens of rockā JOANovARC kicked off the fifth date of their autumn 2019 tour with a Halloween gig at The Victoria Bikersā Pub in Coalville, Leicestershire. First formed in 2004 by sisters Sam and Shelley Walker, it wasnāt until 2016 that JOANovARC released their debut album Ride of Your Life. They followed this up in May 2019 with the self-titled JOANovARC. Goth-rock band FyreSky and Midlands rockers The Howling Tides provided solid support acts that soon revved up the small but enthusiastic audience. JOANovARC then took the stage and hit the ground running with āLive Rock n Rollā, an energetic track from their debut album that set the pace for what was to follow. Next up was āWaiting Forā, a song with an upbeat tempo in defiance of its somewhat downbeat lyrics. The song provided a perfect display of the bandās considerable talent with some excellent riffs from both Shelley Walker and Laura Ozhall. By the time we reached āGirls Wanna Rockā the band had fully hit their stride. A succession of powerful tracks followed, including āTry It Onā, āDown by the Riverā and āThis Wayā, all from their second album.
āSay Saynonaraā allowed bassist Keira Kenworthy an opportunity to take centre stage and display her significant skills not just on bass but also as a vocalist. The track exemplified how JOANovARC have not confined themselves to a single genre, but have skilfully interwoven a variety of musical styles into their output, covering rock, punk, pop and even country. Towards the end of the evening, FyreSkyās Gabriel Valentine and Kris White rejoined the stage to perform a joint cover version of āHighway to Hellā to the enthusiastic delight of the crowd. All too soon, the gig draws to a close. A solid performance from JOANovARC showed that this is a band not just with great material but also excellent musicianship. Catch one of their gigs if you can. The album JOANovARC is available now via Holier Than Thou Records. JOANovARCās current tour runs until 6th December 2019, and information about the upcoming shows can be found on their official website https://www.joanovarc.co.uk/. Read the full article
JoanOvArk/Haxan/Neon Creatures Live @ The Iron Road, Pershore
Yep, an almost total fem fatale feast at Pershoreās Iron Road, ok, Neon Critters, have a trio of road men on drums, bass and lead guitar, but otherwise, girl power all the way.
Eveshamās Neon Creatures, delivered their soft rock, Andy doing sterling work on his Ibanez axe, whilst Andre beats the drum for vocalist, Louisa. They blitzed through there set, culminating in there upbeat, āGet It Right This Timeā and āGone To Groundā, before clearing the way for the more metal beating Haxan.
Haxan, drawn from the steel mills of South Wales, and er⦠Cheltenham, are 3 leather clad girls who like to wield their guitars threateningly and lash us with their long statically charged tresses. Sam on lead and vocals, defies her petite stature, punching out her rock lyrics, Harriet, tosses her hair, struts and provokes, with her bass, whilst in the shadows, Jess drums up encouragement. Both support bands had enthusiastic support from the crowded Iron Road, leaving me to dodge and weave through the riveted fans.
JoanOvArk have an implied name invoking the heroic stand of the French heroine, Ellie fires up the drums, beating out the call to war, guitars shred the air. The feline Keira swings her bass, these. āGirls Wanna Rockā, their thunderous anthem fills the air. Laura on lead vocals threatens with her Gibson Flying V, Shelley is cutting a swathe through the massed hordes below, the leather clad slayer cuts the air with her axe. They have a new album to tout and āDown By The Riverā, is drawn from that well, a rock ballad, that stands like a fortress over the swollen waters of the Avon, Ellie is whipping up the current, sticks a blur, but always a smile on her face. Their first album spawned. āWhite Trashā, which pumped into life with pounding drums, thunderous bass, and soaring riffs, charging the atmosphere.
The band line has changed a little with the release of the new album, notably in the rhythm section, with Ellie and Keira stepping in. āPeople Coming Upā is destined to be a crowd pleaser at this summers festival, whoahwhaohwhoa, calls for the crowd to respond, certainly worked here, as the band fans the flames, they have all the moves, the pizazz and front you could want, and gang of followers before them are putty in their collective hands. āJaneā, bubbles and pops, an arguably more commercial sound, but full of driving drum and bass, and Shelleyās guitar riffs, Spice Girls? Who were they? THIS IS A GIRL BAND! Keira sets up the base on her Rickenbacker, as the girls swing into, āSlipping Awayā, also from the new self titled JoanOvArk album. The evening draws towards its electrifying close, Shelley and Keira are down amidst the fans, āFree Birdā,takes to the air, as the sizzling girl power evening at The Iron Road, extinguishes like a disposed cigarette, on the floor of the pit.
