As the world marks the very first International Education Day, we honor the crucial role education plays in our lives with this 2012 Poetry in Motion poem “Graduation” by Dorothea Tanning with artwork by Joan Linder from her installation “The Flora of Bensonhurst” for the 71st Street (D) station in Brooklyn.

Back to the land! Joan Linder created intricate ink drawings of flora based on the local wild vegetation of the Bensonhurst landscape in her elegant laminated glass artwork, “The Flora of Bensonhurst” on the elevated platforms of the 71st Street D train station. These panels act as windows to a lost history—a place shaped by Native Americans and farmers, and a counterpoint to the built environment of the city. Linder’s work is now on view in a solo exhibition “Project Sunshine” at Mixed Green’s Gallery through November 14. She will be drawing in the gallery each week Thursday through Saturday, for the duration of the show.
