I will bet actual money that the writers of this episode watched Project Hail Mary and thought: "But what if this was a romance manhwa?" One of the craziest, strangest episodes to come out of Tokyo Debunker, but I'm kind of rolling with it?
The way the plot started with "Let's solve this riddle!" and went right to "Star-crossed time-travel alien sci-fi romance" is insane. It came out of nowhere, and I can't believe how casual everyone was about it. They freaked out for maybe two minutes? Then accepted that they'd be spending 22 days in space with an alien king. Ren spent more time worrying about going on a boat than being in space. I just imagine Haru asking Ren how his cowherd mission went and him going "Oh I went to a planet 15 light years away and went back in time and cooked for an alien sky king and destroyed a robot abductor ship. Also I rode a hoverboard which was the worst part." Yeah I'd quit being a captain.
On the Sky King's story: I thought it was really beautiful! Who knew that the MC would be this timeline's version of the girl in the Sky King folktale from the OG Star Festival. I wish he could've stuck around, perhaps stayed in Hotarubi or with MC, because he deserves a happy ending! I'm dying to see him and MC reunite in the future, and finally have some time alone without Jin interfering...imagine pining after the girl you like for ten years, and the moment you see her again some jealous ass captain pulls you away from her LMAO.
Speaking of Jin...who knew that his biggest romantic competitor would be an alien king from space. He was so jealous this episode. Now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder what his reaction was when he heard that MC went on a romance reality tv show without him in this timeline. Must've been fuming.
On the topic of timelines, we're really beginning to see just how much everything got messed up due to Dionysia's entrance. First the Waves of Love show, then the Star Festival, and now the entire Vagastrom school mission never happened. From what I can gather, I believe the chain of events went like this:
Dionysia comes back -> Institute/Darkwick buffing up their security -> Tohma/Jin being unable to work as well in private -> Ghouls needing to take more public action to out the spy -> Vagastrom and Frostheim ceasefire, Tohma and Alan's alliance going public.
I'm wondering what change will happen in the timeline next. I was hoping for another Vagastrom mission, since it's officially been around a year since the last one, but I'm excited for Jabberwock in Wonderland too!! More Ren, Haru, and Towa content are always welcome.
A few other notes that aren't as important:
I was thinking about the boat problem pre-episode, since the cowherds would have to cross the lake with Ren and Luca. I thought that the two would just have to deal with it, only for Mio to solve it with freaking hoverboards?? They were apparently brought due to Elias' advice, which further solidifies the theory that "Elias knows the future". Because who on Earth would think of bringing hoverboards to a festival ahead of time?
Kaito simping for fem-Jo is the realist shit ever(she's so hot).
Can we talk about the students from Vagastrom who are planning on giving their money to Alan for his internship? I feel like out of all the houses, Vagastrom's members have the closest relationship with the ghouls. Alan really is loved and admired by his house.
We got confirmation that Alan has never been going for the Laurel Crown! I wonder what Leo and Sho's reaction would be to that info. The idea that Alan and Tohma have been working together to get Jin the Laurel Crown this whole time is insane.
We got a few Subaru lore snippets this episode: I believe Subaru sympathized with Luca's doubt over his family's ordinances. I wonder how Subaru's trauma might relate to his family?

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode! I've been pleasantly surprised with the quality of Season 2 so far, I feel like the writers are taking the lore a lot more seriously this time. Can't wait for the next one :)
